Well, I didn't like being driven to copyrighted-content theivery, but that was my option, given how MTV runs episodes ...I miss the Warehouse.

And I'd glady pay even MTV money to buy actual videotapes of the series...here's hoping they see that there's enough of a market.

What other cable networks does Viacom own besides MTV and VH1? Maybe they'll start stripping them -- or even put them on late on Sundays -- once the series ends.

I think it's Comedy Central. Also, didn't TNN change their name to "The National Network" since it got wrestleing (I hope they didn't think wrestling fans would get scared away by the name of a network, I know I wouldn't care).

TNN gets a real bad rap for being a hillbilly station that plays reruns of starsky and hutch and bows down to Billy Ray Cyrus. This attitude towards the network is incredibly true in the Northeastern states where we like to separate ourselves from the southern half of this country. The name change makes perfect sense for them to remove some of this image.

That's all well and good, but the whole idea of DVD still hasn't set in well with the parents. Example: Despite the fact that I'm saving up for a DVD player, my parents don't think we NEED a DVD player since we've already got a VCR.

So, for those that have to beg mumsy and dadsy to get a DVD player, you might be out of luck.

This DOES bring up an interesting question: How does one convince a non-believer into getting a DVD player?

Within six months to a year, video range will be puny and DVD range huge, the price the same, and DVD players as cheap as VCR's. It won't remain an alternate choice - it will become standard as videos are phased out. In the mean time, I'm busy convincing my parents *not* to buy one until they come down, so they can spend more money on computer games in the mean time ;P.

Smart move, which reminds me: I've been looking for Quake2/Quake3/etc opponents for well over a year, and no one seems to want to step forward (Despite the fact that several people who shall remain nameless boast about how good they are). Well I probably won't be buying one in the forseable future I don't really believe in supporting a standard that tries to restrict where I buy my disks. I don't believe that video recorders will be phased out that quickly, too many people will continue to own them, rember they said that CD would be the death of vinyl....ok most mainstream shops don't stock it but there are cirtain types of music that are only available on vinyl.

Well I do occasionally play Q2, though I'm not as good as I used to be, along with Quake, Unreal, Unreal Tournement. Currently battling with the single player games in "Klingon Honour Guard" and "Voyager: Elite Forces".

Yeah, the zoning is a terrible idea, as it basically means if you buy some DVDs from UK shops and some online from the US, you will need two DVD players, one for each region. Although some devices can be hacked to any region (the Wharfedale DVD player sold by Tescos is apparently good for this), most players can only be switched a finite number of times (though I'm not sure how they tell, presumably it's burnt into a write-only PROM or something). My new ATI video card has hardware DVD playback support, but it too turns out to be region coded, and can only be switched five times. After that you're stuck with whichever region you chose on the fifth occasion! Talk about a rip-off! I don't understand why a video card's DVD hardware would be region coded, as it doesn't incorporate an actual player. It's rather worrying that my new purchase might stop working if I used it to play different region DVDs more than a couple of times!

There was a thing posted on Tom's Hardware a few days ago about new video compression technology, basically you can now take a DVD. DeCSS it then compress the movie down to a size that'll go on a CD-R. The compression takes about 9 hours on a decent PC but the quality is good. At least as good as a regular video cassette.

Check around, some players are like that but the desirable ones allow you to *turn off* region coding entirely so they will play anything without further attention.

No need to change region or worry about how many times you've done so. A quick web trawl will tell you how to hack the models currently on sale in the UK and which ones are the best to get from a region hacking point of view.

Oddly enough living in the US, the only time I've really remembered the word greenback was because it was the name of the main villian from the UK cartoon show "Danger Mouse", from when it aired here on Nickelodeon in the early-mid 80's, I believe, Baron Silas Greenback was his name. Wasn't there another series of episodes after Nickelodeon dropped it from their lineup about 1990 or so?

I remember never missing an airing of that show, even if i'd seen the episode 10 times, I'd always try to be in front of my TV on channel 23 where I live at 7:30 p.m. every night. This was back when I was 10 years old. Boy, I liked that show.

I'd agree that "quid" plays the part in BritE for "pound" that "buck" does in AmE for "dollar"; but since I've never had the privilege of visiting the USA, I base this on the word's use in American TV and literature.

To save any fanfic writers from embarrassment, if they write a UK-based fic: quid is a plural noun. One quid, fifty quid: never "quids," except humourously.

Totally! It was one of those things where the writers and animators get bored stiff doing a children's programme so they throw in subtle jokes only adults are likely to get.

It supposedly is making fun on the Danger Man series with Patrick (whose second name I've forgotten but was number 6 in The Prisoner).

ok, i shouldn't really say this up in a public newsgroup... but i know in china, some of their DVD-players, can play any DVDs. and also, some of the DVDs (don't ask if they're pirated) can be played by any machine. so ... to overcome your problem of the zoning....

It's like the CD and tape debate ... one is good for recording and editing, one is good for quality. Most people use both. Buying a DVD player doesn't invalidate the VCR!

Doesn't seem to have happened here, last time I looked, DVD's where around 19pounds, new movies on tapes are around the 12 to 15 pound range. It looks awfully like they've used the format change as an excuse to jack up prices.

I just wanted everyone to know that the daria warehouse was taken off the air because of bandwidth issues, not legal action or anything (although if MTV or anyone else involved had said anything remotely like "take it down or else" it would have been off faster than you can say boo).

No, what had happened is that I was the only mirror site of the warehouse. A guy named jbone ran it from his college, and when he either left college, or they killed the site or whatever the reason, my site became the primary site (actually the primary site went down, but the mirror directory remained un-touched on my server)... When I was just a mirror site there was low traffic, so no big deal, but lately, my bandwidth has been killed, so no more daria warehouse, sorry.

Anyway, I have tried to contact jbone to no avail, and there have been no updates to the page or new episodes.

I have not permanently deleted the files, just moved them off of the web site. No, I won't post them here, and really, I don't even feel like they are rightfully mine anyway, because it was jbone running the show, I just provided a directory and some bandwidth.

If there is anyone who wants to start it up again, send me an email and we can discuss it, I would like to just wash my hands of this anyway.

Sorry for taking the site down, I liked it too... but when it comes to saturating my pipe and leaving me nothing, I am just like that. Sorry.
