On a side note: I clicked on the "similar products" link to see what Amazon deemed to be "similar" to Daria Life Central, and I found it so incredibly ironic that they listed a bunch of BARBIE and AMERICAN GIRL (the ones where you play dress-up and stuff) CD-ROMS!

hey, that would be me! Actually I got like money for my birthday but annoying amounts of that are going towards the Damn Video Conversions... my tech teacher had an assignment "what would you improve?" I was like "make the damn videos and DVDs compatible!" (does anyone know the point with Region One and Region Two DVDs, besides being generally annoying?) but I guess this is a last remnant of nationalism and stuff.
Dammit I need a job.

It was insisted on by the movie industry, so as to segment the international market. I think they thought it would reduce piracy, but of course it won't because people have come out with fixes which defeat it. I hear that you can buy regionless DVDs in Japan, and there are hardware settings you can change to some makes of drive to change or abolish the region setting. The whole thing is stupid, as it means if you're in the UK and buy some DVDs from an online shop like Amazon.com and some from local shops then in theory you'd have to buy two DVD players, one for the US discs and one for the UK ones. Some people were trying to whip up a boycott of DVD until the manufacturers discontinued region coding. If sales don't take off it may yet happen.

Well, actually, it's probably to ensure that the movie is actually worth releasing overseas, as if the movie is to be dubbed, then dubbing actors have to be hired, and their performances put into the reels that get sent overseas as well. Again, you don't waste a lot of money dubbing a bomb. (Unless, of course, you think it'll sell well in Italy as an "art" film. ;-)

Oh yeah, I'm sure that's the reason they delayed Episode I for 3 months. This argument isn't any good. Even the movies that don't make it to our movie theaters come out as video usually. I don't think you can name any US movie that didn't make it to Germany as a video because it was a bomb in the US (for other reasons probably, but not because it wasn't successful at the US box office). Besides, there are movies (and TV series) that are more successful internationally than they are in the US. I think Sledge Hammer was a hit everywhere but the US. US box office results are of limited value in appraising international success. It's one of the prime mistakes that US companies only produce for the domestic market and streamline their products for the US market only. They could make a lot more money if they considered the international market during production. MSB

More likely is that it takes time and money to copy the film. If they can use old reels from the US and send them overseas for international audiences, it saves them lots of money. All of this will change when digital projectors and streaming video become the prevalent form of movie distribution...I think there were a few showings of Star Wars Ep. 1 using the new projection technology in a couple of theaters around the US.
