News from Noggin

After a complicated journey through the Viacom bureaucracy, I finally spoke to Mary Parkiness (sp?), head of programming for Noggin, and here is what she shared with me.

1) Noggin has licensed "Daria" from MTV for 3 years. We are just coming on Year One. She doesn't know if they'll run it all three years, but they'll definitely run it for another year.

2) Very important: because "Daria" is still MTV's property, it is UNLIKELY that if MTV put out "Daria" DVDs, they would be the edited Noggin versions. Noggin only licenses the show. She doesn't know what MTV's long-term plans are.

3) On June 27th at 8 pm, they will finally be premiering "Is It College Yet?"

I thought about pressing her about the edits and why certain episodes were considered too "risque" to be included in the line-up, but I was grateful enough just to get this information. And frankly, as long as the DVDs are spared, I don't care.

My next step, I think, will be to go to the mouth of Hell. MTV!

Are those exclusive rights? That is, could MTV license the show to another network, even while Noggin has the 3 year rights, or does MTV have to wait for those 3 years to be up?

Now that TNN is SpikeTV, with a target demographic of young males, Comedy Central should be the target of fan efforts to get uncut Daria on TV again. Last time I checked, Comedy Central is targeting itself at a much more...um...diverse audience. Like both sexes, for example...

Me: Yeah. It's sad, when I first remembered hearing that Beavis & Butt-Head would be going to TNN, at the time, it seemed like a good idea for Daria to go there too (Maybe even show the two shows in an hour-block).

I 've been campaigning for Daria to be aired on Comedy Central since November. Now that TNN/Spike TV seems far less likely to air Daria (I just can't see "Daria" in the same animation block as the Pamela Anderson cartoon "Stripperella," can you?), it seems I need to step up my e-mail efforts to get CC to show Daria uncut.
