D-tag is dead! Long live D-tag!

When I initially started with the "Daria-the adventure game" project I did it based on the assumption that people would be anxious to contribute ideas. As everyone has probably noticed, it didn't happen (yes, there were a few, and I appreciate that). I won't give up the idea, yet, but in its current form the project will be put on hold indefinitely. Without lots of other people helping, the whole project has to be scaled down. The most notable changes are a) The all-around-the-world idea is dead. The new D-tag will be restricted to Lawndale. b) The different teams idea is dead. Daria is the PC. Jane is the NPC sidekick. End of story.

It goes without saying that I still accept any ideas for the all-around-the-world plot. Postponed doesn't mean cancelled.

The new plot that I am working on will be a crime story. Daria and Jane become private investigators. This involves solving several small puzzles in side-plots as well as the main crime. I'm still thinking about what kind of crime would be appropriate. It must be complex enough to give the whole game a main plot, yet it should not be too extreme.

(Side note: At first I considered actual murder, but from that point my mind started drifting in a Twin Peaks like weirdness and suddenly I had the plot for an X-rated nightmare that included Jane being raped and/or slaughtered, Daria almost sacrificed as a virgin by a cult, everyone slowly turning mad and Daria dying in the end. Maybe I will write that someday under the title "Quinn Peaks" if that isn't alread taken by some fanfic, but currently I'm thinking more about a game suitable for all ages.)

At the moment I'm considering arson (in Lawndale High). It's an interesting crime for which there are many possible motives. Additionally there is always the possibility of making it turn out to be an accident in the end. I haven't decided about that, yet. Maybe I'll just let Mr DeMartino go mad like in the Daria Database. Setting the school on fire would fit his personality, I think.

Any suggestions are welcome, even if they differ completely from my crime story plot. If someone has a better idea I will be happy to dump my plot and start a new one.

Ending this message I want to elaborate a bit on the crime story idea. It may turn out to be too complicated in the end, but I am considering giving the player control over the conclusions D&J draw. I imagine a notebook where the computer would note important and unimportant facts that D&J have found out. The player has to connect these facts to reflect the conclusions he has drawn. This would influence D&Js progress in the game. Let me give you an example: When asked about the time of the incident, Mr DeMartino states that he was at home all the time. After a while, D&J get hold of a surveillance tape from a shop that shows Mr DeMartino. The player would have to activate the notebook and mark Mr DeMartino's statement as a lie. After doing that, D&J can confront Mr DeMartino with it. If the player does not make the connection, the respective dialog line remains unavailable. MSB

I'm kind of new to ATD but I have an idea for a general crime story plot. Here goes:

What if some of the major characters of Lawndale had items stolen from them. (ie. Trent's guitar, Kevin's football, Brittney's pom poms, etc) and Daria & Jane decide to crack the case. It would start small but the longer it took for the girls to solve the crimes, the more items (and bigger items) that would be stolen (from classmates, teachers, parents, etc.) Maybe the ultimate item taken, if they do not solve the crime, could be Daria's glasses. Well, it's just an idea.

I don't think it will be stolen but it will definitely be one of the locations of the game. BTW, does it appear in an episode. I don't remember seeing it, but I haven't seen season 3. MSB

*Sigh* No, it doesn't appear in an episode-- it appears in "The Daria Diaries," and on the Lawndale High website at Daria.mtv.com .

I'm just disappointed that nobody seemed to get my reference.

Is it shown on mtv.com? Unless I have overlooked it, there is no pic in the Diaries, just the location on the map.

What reference? MSB

It's on the map only, and on the website, read Ms. Li's message-- she mentions Mr. O'Neill's campaign to save the Big Strawberry.

In "The Caine Mutiny," Captain Quieg keeps searching for a package of strawberries that are missing on his ship. He basically goes off on a paranoid-delusional jaunt unti the First Officer has to relieve him of his duties. The movie starred Humphrey Bogart as Quieg-- he kept twirling these metal balls in his hand, mumbling about how he knew that someone had stolen the strawberries from him, but he'd find the culprit, oh yes, he'd find him...

Mr. O'Neill: Let's pledge to make Daria's dream a reality!

Daria: You mean the one where people walking down the street burst into flames?

Mr. O'Neill: The coffeehouse!

I wasn't terribly impressed with the movie. There were a few things that were changed from the book (which I read long before ever seeing the movie; great book, btw), and I tend to hate it when directors "get creative" with the story.

I know that one from somewhere. I think it was a kid's edutainment CD. Nevertheless, the plot can be used. Of course, you will have to tell me the conclusion of the puzzle for I don't see how to resolve that puzzle in a logical way. If you have a good idea for that conclusion, please send me private email (I don't want big spoilers for the game like that here). MSB

Nah, if they took Daria's glasses, she'd be completely ineffective. Her jacket, however...

Sounds cool. I can easily see Jane totally decking herself out in a Sherlock Holmes style outfit, while Daria kind of followed along with a "oh brother" attitude at Jane's enthusiasm, while offering half-hearted, but extremely helpful, suggestions. I can also see the others that got things stolen being invloved, perhaps another opportunity for Brittney to display her erratic ("he said, 'erratic.' That's not the same as 'erotic.'") talents. Not to mention Kevin's "Talents." ;p

I even know who would be behind it, and why. I wonder how this could be implemented? Maybe a "choose your own adveutre" style hypertext fanfic?

You really should follow Michelle's recomendation and check out Virtual Stupidity. I always thought that the VS format would be perfect for a Daria game. The only problem is it's very hard to find. Even when it first came out it was hard to find. It's especially suited to the scaled down plan you described above.
