They're here! I saw it! I wasn't hallucinating! not this time at least.

"You shouldn't smoke videotapes," they say. "Plastic fumes are poisonous and will do weird things to you." Weird things? Not unless the satisfaction of having enjoyed a great smoke is a "weird thing."

Yes, "Daria! The Musical!" is far worse than I even feared if the commercial is to be trusted.

I have emailed Glenn on this in hopes he will tell me something soothing, that this is not going to be an omen for the future direction of the show, that there will be more shows owing more to "See Jane Run" and "Write Where It Hurts" rather than this distressing turn.

If "Daria" is going to turn into "The Simpsons" I might as well pack Lawndale Commons in.

So, can someone please tell us about the commercial? Some people haven't seen it, some people never will see it because they've only got C5, and some people's cable is fucked. :)

Okay, here goes: but first--some SPOILERS to get in practice for the new season. :) / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

The commercial mixes a few scenes of the show with interview segments outside a Broadway theater. First you see a crowd singing "la la la la la" (from the show's theme), and an announcer says "Broadway is going ga-ga over "Daria! the Musical!" Then it jumps to a scene of Daria standing with Jane, Kevin and Brittany and Daria is singing "They must be worried..." Then a man saying "Daria is selling like hotcakes", followed by a woman who says "I loved the song about testosterone" and two others replying "Oh my God!"...then jumps to Jake with Trent, an arm around each other's shoulder, and Jake sings "I'm proud to be the home of a Y chromosone" while giving a bit of a wiggle in the hip area! Then two men on the street: "I stayed awake the whole show, I couldn't believe myself"--"No you didn't!"--"I did!", then another man says "I know musicals and THIS was a musical" then turns his head and says "What's your problem?" Then it cuts to a scene showing the Morgendorffer family, Jane and Trent, and the Fashion Club, then just about EVERY remaining character walks into the scene, including...hang on to your hats! :) ....a BLOND Andrea! Apparently this is the finale of the musical, and everyone is singing something I couldn't make out, because the announcer is saying "watch the musical season premiere of 'Daria', Wednesday February 17th at 10pm eastern", with the final scene showing a little girl who says, "I'm never washing my ears again!"

There you have it. And as far as the "bad omen"--I have no problem as long as it's a one-shot deal.

I haven't been watching too much MTV lately, so I haven't seen the commercial. I agree that as long as the musicals are a one-shot thing (which they almost certainly will be), we won't have any problems at all. IF it's a poor episode, we'll all be upset for a few days but I don't think we can ditch the entire season because of one stinker. Most of us have seen "The Daria Hunter" and still come back for more (Apologies to those that liked TDH, sorry).

Another thing I noticed in the commercial....so for those who don't want to know, more SPOILERS! :) / / / / / / / / / / The final scene shown in the commercial shows the entire cast in a group shot. It appears there's some debris on the ground and a car up on the pavement. I'm guessing that Daria was singing "They must be worried" because a tornado hit Lawndale and Daria, Jane, Kevin and Brittany were trapped in a basement together while the storm passed.

Daria and Jane trapped in a basement with Kevin and Brittany does sound like an interesting idea, though. -------------------- the Society to Rid the Earth of Celine Dion Mike Scaramastro, President & Founder

I was just looking at the MTV site, and if you click on "this week's clip" you can watch (actually it's more hear than watch...) what I presume is the controversial advert with Jake & Helen etc singing. The pictures kept freezing I don't know if you were supposed to see the whole cast, I only saw Jake & Helen, but I'm sure I heard the others somewhere in the middle. This realvideo stuff is incredibly bad quality!

I just made another four or five attempts to view this thing, and I have to say, (this being the first time I've tried it) that realvideo really is a heap of fetid garbage! Why can't they just let you download a standard avi file instead? It would not only be much better but also much quicker than making several attempts to view the stupid thing as a live stream. I even set the preferences to buffer the whole video in memory and it still kept freezing! In the end I found that if I kept pausing and restarting it I got to see most of the missing frames and the sequence does after all seem to be just one scene of Jake & Helen and not the other cast members so maybe not the ad. that people have been talking about, or else it's only one segment from it.

The episode descriptions make intriguing reading. Indeed, they're possibly even a little ominous... but maybe it's just the way they wrote them up... but a fantasy show where Daria & Jane talk to some *holidays* that have run away?! This is the episode where they drop a tab of acid, right? I guess they had to get into drugs sooner or later...

warning: long, neurotic post induced by stomach flu and insomnia ahead.

*Sigh* As soon as I saw the blurb on the MTV site, I had that queasy, sick feeling right in the pit of my stomach, and knew that either the pulled BBQ chicken I had for dinner was doing a number on me, or I would have to respond to just this sort of question. It turned out to be a little of both. I blame Fr. Martin for spreading his illness to me via the net, or maybe via bad karma for the whole USA Celebs thing. <g> Oh, well, I can't sleep anyway (stupid stomach), so I might as well get this over with, and be done with it.

Short answer: No. It is all merely a *coincidence.* Nothing more, nothing less. If that's all you need, you need not read any further. If you seek entertainment, however, by all means, continue! You know I'm always in VERBOSE mode, so you've been warned. <g>

I will now state for the Official Record, and under my continuing oath previously sworn on the grave of Abe Vigoda, subject to whatever perjury rules that may obtain jurisdiction in this newsgroup, that, as a sworn Officer of the State Courts of the State of North Carolina, as well as of the Federal Courts of said Jurisdiction, and as a duly commisioned Notary Public of the State of North Carolina, that I, rich (yes, it's my real first name), also known by the pseudonyms or nomes des plumes "paperpusher" and "the paperpusher," have not at any time whatsoever had any substantial, significant, or otherwise relevant contacts to my knowledge or belief with anyone connected with the production staff of the show "Daria," its heirs, assigns or related chattels whatsoever. (How's that for a sentence? And it's grammatically correct, too!)

Furthermore, I do hereby swear and/or affirm that I finished my little scriptwriting exercise in late September, 1998, most likely *many months after* the folks in NYC started production on episode #301. Please keep in mind that it takes *a very long time* to produce an episode of "Daria," as the cels are not painted by computer, but by hand. (Or at least that's what I've been led to believe by what other posters on this group have said.)

While it is true that I did submit a badly written rushed entry into a contest that MTVA sponsored looking for ideas for new shows, it had *absolutely nothing whatsoever* to do with this script/fic/thingy I wrote, and the contest was *not* sponsored by the "Daria" folks, to the best of my knowledge and belief. (Although I did get a cool fax cover sheet from MTVA with Daria peeking over the bottom-- nice touch-- but totally unrelated-- a whole different department.) (I had to rush the stupid thing because, ironically enough, a hurricane (Bonnie) was heading right for the coast, and I didn't have time to work on the treatment or settle on a definite sketch before the damn storm struck, and the deadline was fast approaching. *sigh* Irony, you are well and truly my first, my one and only Muse. ;-) ) And the entry to the contest was apparently 86'd, which is okay by me, as I want to do it right and on my own, anyway.

Now, to further illustrate my point that this is all a horrible coincidence, imagine a million monkeys, each sealed into two very large, very smelly storage jars (MPFC ref) equipped with the latest word-processing equipment. Now, imagine that both storage jars are sealed tight, that the monkeys in each jar have never met the monkeys in the other jar, that they have no way of communicating with one another, and that the jars are approximately 5.0 x 10^9 light years apart from each other. It is quite easily within the realm of possibility that these two groups of monkeys could both write scripts involving things like bananas, trees, and how smelly the jars they work in have become, but other than that, the scripts turn out to be completely different, in that one is a Broadway Musical about a smelly storage jar full of monkeys, longing to climb trees, and the other is a USA Movie of the Week about a smelly storage jar full of monkeys who really aren't too keen on bananas so much anymore. See how they're similar, yet completely different? I hope so. (God, I truly do hope so.)

In other words, "there is nothing new under the sun." And if for some reason, you're wondering just why I was writing sample scripts, well, a Partner in Crime and I are working on a series of *totally unrelated* cartoon shorts *for our own little production company.* Well, it's not really a company, yet, it's just a chunk of a basement we work in every now and then when aren't working at our real life deadly dull jobs (I'm a young Real Estate Attorney, so I must keep my true identitiy a secret so as not to scare my clients needlessly-- who'd want a closet aspiring animation writer/creator/whatever to do the closing on his/her $300,000 home? Not I, said the little pig.) We do have a sick, twisted, and slightly evil dream of turning Chapel Hill into the next great Mecca for totally whacked animation-- we figure if Wilmington, NC can become the 3rd largest movie town in the US (and the home of that dreadful show Dawson's Creek), then Chapel Hill can dare to be as great as well. Besides, the bars are more fun in Chapel Hill, as is the music. <g> Anyway, these shorts are extremely unlikely to ever see the light of day, but I needed the practice of writing in the script style. And, no, we haven't even storyboarded them yet-- we're still hashing out "issues." <g> I also wrote the fics/scripts/whatever because I wanted to see how well I could do it, too. <g> I also get pleasure from writing something that some fans appreciate, which gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling. But, anyway, we figure if we can do the little project, we can do another, bigger project we've also started to kick the tires on, and that is the reason why we're doing the shorts in the first place. I hereby promise on the grave of Abe Vigoda (again) that as soon as our projects are ready for showing, we will show them to y'all first through my lame little site. (Right after we copyright them, natch.) <g>

Finally, please keep in mind that as a standard industry practice, the production staff and writers of most series *do not read fansubs.* I just wish to underline the coincidental nature of the whole damn thing.

Now, I'm gonna read my daily Suck, mainline some Immodium, and go to bed. (Good grief, look at the time! Aiiii!) Please don't make me speak any further on this topic, unless you wish to offer me a check, offer me a job sweeping up cartoon production house floors, hire me for a closing, or need something notarized. <g>

Oh, and did I mention that this was all just a coincidence? I blame the penne a la pesto. <g>

<reassure mode> I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it, Michelle. I would guess that they're just trying to have a little fun with the series. Remember, every season has a "Daria Hunter" or "Fair Enough" for every "Write Where It Hurts," "Misery Chick," or "See Jane Run." If every episode was a heavy hitter, everyone would complain that the show was too preachy or too "downbeat." ;-) Every now and then you just have to have fun with the charcters and have a few cheap laughs. I guess what I'm saying is that these sorts of things balance out, and usually to the plus side, making the show more well-rounded as a whole, rather than as a Johnny-One-Note kind of show that can only preach, and can't unloosen its dog collar every now and then and just laugh from the gut.. (And, yes, I have to admit that I laughed off a few IQ points myself when I saw Jake & Trent singing about their having "a home for their Y-chromosome." I have no idea what it means, but I bet it's all part of a dream.)

And also remember, it's a teaser, designed to elicit a strong response from the viewer and to spark interest in viewing the program. And, hey, it's the Season Premiere-- an event designed to get a ratings boost, so that new viewers will be intrgued by the show and will (hopefully) start watching it. And, of course, there's also the standard rule that most teasers are just ever so slightly misleading. I remember how the group wondered about the "New Kid" teaser as well. (Maybe that's why they stopped running them?) ;-)

[I bet it all turns out to be a dream, brought on by too much penne a la pesto, anyway. ;-) (Remember the "Chicago Hope" ep? And a few hundred others done just like it in other series? It's a standard plot device.)]

I wouldn't fetch the suitcases yet. If Jake suddenly starts handling nuclear materials, *then* I'll start to worry. Until then, I figure that they've managed to squeeze out 26 eps that are on balance excellent so far-- I doubt that they'd mess with the premise of the show *that* much. I also doubt that OH will suddenly become a caricature of herself, because if she did, it would completely alienate the already alienated (but not by the show) fanbase. I think when we look back on the series as a whole (as Mike Quinn does in his reviews), we'll probably get a good chuckle out of this ep, and we'll see it in its proper context, among stronger meat later on in the season. Also, remember, the heavy-hitting eps are usually saved for the second half of the season, anyway, while the "fluffier" [for lack of a better term] ones usually air earlier. </reassure mode>

Do you mean a dream in the show or in that the commercial was so surreal you felt like you weren't really watching it? I have to admit that the commercial left me in stitches and curiosity, which was probably what they were hitting for.

One question: Were the people interviewed about their review of "The Musical" actors or lucky bastards I should envy for having seen the premier already?

I'm gonna hafta use "laughed off a few IQ points" sometime. I've never heard that term before.

I recall having seen several commercials on Fox that completely distorted what the actual show was like, usually a scene coincidentially minutely in common with a current event or a bunch of scenes stitched together to highlight the "PG" aspects that really had no effect to the plot.

In case you can't tell, I hate Fox. (Despite the fact that they have some good tastes in shows... sound familiar?)

I have to say, after a taste of this I'm itching to see the entire thing.

And as it turns out, the plot *is* very similar to the fanfic idea I mentioned in an earlier post. Very weird.

Thank you, rich, for providing a voice of reason. I thought the promos were hysterical! And as a huge fan of the show, I can't wait to see what our favoite neurotics come up with when forced to sing and dance. Does anybody really want to see 20 re-treaded versions of "Misery Chick"? One of the things that I really like about _Daria_ is its ability to keep me laughing *while* it's preaching. It's a trait I've seen few other places. "Dunesbury" at its best definitely had it (I haven't been able to read "Dunesbury" in quite a while). A few writers I'm familiar with have pulled it off: Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's _Good Omens_ and some of Tom Holt's stuff come immediately to mind. "Write Where It Hurts" was one of the "heavier" episodes of last season, but it was also, IMHO, one of the funniest; it's entirely possible the season premiere will be similar.

Of course, it will still be worth watching if it's just a series of cheap laughs up to the show's usual standards.

I sent Glenn a second email, telling him I'd give the show a chance, and he emailed me back on that one (no response to the first) basically stating that everyone on staff of "Daria" is proud of this episode and that it is distressing to him that many people, including myself initially, have gotten the knives out prematurely.

I have to admit, I am shell-shocked by the transformation of "The Simpsons" from a very clever and insightful show (first few seasons) to the absolute idea-free ABORTION it is right now. Sorry Happydude, but IMNSHO "The Simpsons" ceased to be funny somewhere towards the middle of this decade and currently the show is beating a very dead and very smelly horse carcass.

I am also shell-shocked by how rapidly "South Park" descended into repeating itself constantly. Foul-mouthed kids and no likeable characters gets very old very quickly.

I don't want to see "Daria" go down that hideous path. I need to trust the fact that unlike the writers for "The Simpsons" and "South Park" the team on "Daria" is perhaps the wittiest and strongest writing staff on television, animated or live action.

I reacted so violently initially because I love the show so much, and I have been burnt so badly by good cartoons going bad that I couldn't bear the idea of "Daria" going downhill.

The proof of the pudding will be in the watching. --.\\<-H--

I think you can be forgiven for panicking at the initial reports. I'm sure we've all seen the musical format done VERY badly on other shows. It seems it's hard to do well. But there's hope in the fact that the Daria creative people have managed to maintain the quality so far. Have a little trust. It all boils down to trust. If this works it could be magnificent. But that would only be because they were willing to take a chance that they'd fail. You don't produce outstanding TV shows like Daria by avoiding risks.

One interesting observation from the ad: Daria (Tracy Grandstaff) seems to have an unexpectedly good singing voice. Much better than Janeane Garofalo. ;-) No matter what, this'll be interesting.

Hey, maybe MTV are thinking of releasing a Daria album! That would explain the injection of music into the episodes. Actually a compilation album of the end themes would be quite good. Most TV shows these days seem to have spin-off albums, like there's a Sabrina one out which features the bands who've been on that show, plus Sabrina herself (Melissa Joan Hart) singing Blondie's "One Way or Another" (which she actually does very well). Sadly it's marred by the fact that they've had some really loathsome bands on Sabrina (eg. Backstreet Boys). The line up for Daria is much better, though it's a moot question as to whether a CD should include Daria herself singing.

"She'll be comin' 'round the mountain" and "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" are indeed previous examples of Daria's singing but I don't think they quite show off her voice in the same way that "Daria! - The Musical" appears to, based on the short clip in the TV spot. For no other reason than that, "Daria! - The Musical" should earn a respected spot in the "Daria" episode roster.

I've been catching up on Beavis & Butthead, having only gotten access to MTV not quite a year ago (on DirecTV), just for the chance to learn more about Daria (Some pretty good Daria stuff). I notice that of the many roles that Tracy Grandstaff is credited with there is a fairly significant range of different voices, ie. they don't all sound like Daria. Daria's voice is truly an artistic impression created my Ms. Grandstaff. From the range of other voices it appears that Ms. Grandstaff really is a talented voice artist. (I judge actors overall by the range of roles they've done.) I noticed in the B&B credits that she was credited with the voice of Mrs. Cleaver in "Leave it to Beavis." That voice is so very different from Daria's that it was then that I suddenly realized just how good Tracy Grandstaff is.

Of course there are a lot of talented voice artists working on "Daria."

I think that may be the Understatement of the Year. <g> I still wonder how Wendy Hoopes manages to do the voices of Jane, Quinn, and Helen-- especially when 2 of the characters are in the same scene-- do they have to do them in separate takes, or can she "shift on the fly?" I know that methods vary from production to production...

Also, you've got to give Marc Thompson credit for managing to not only be able to do Mr. O'Neill and Mr. DeMartino-- a Jekyll and Hyde act if I ever saw one-- but also to do the voice of Kevin, empty-headed boy blunder, among other incidental voices as well. (DeMartino's voice has *got* to be tough on the old vocal cords, though.) <g>

May I point out that we saw maybe a total of 10 seconds of animation in this commercial. I could easily take 10 seconds of "Write Where It Hurts" and make a promo that would look even worse. (Granted, it would have to be a specific 10 seconds, but MTV's ad department is really good at that sort of thing.)

The musical numbers could be (day)dreams resulting from (A) Too much of Pizza King's Anchovy and Mandarin Orange Special before bedtime; (B) Mr. O'Neill running a week-long look at American Musical Theatre in the middle of a spell of insomnia for Our Heroine ("Seven Brides For Seven Brothers", anyone?); (C) OH receiving a blow to the head during gym class (sort of a la "Chicago Hope"); (D) All of the above; (E) Insert your favorite plot complication here.

Lrt's wait until after we see it before we say it sucks, shall we?

Oh now your just not being optimistic. Yes Daria the Musical looks foolish, but it looks FUN. Yes, FUN. It won't be the most seriouse episod,e but sometimes we need something like this. Just sit back, get some popcorn and enjoy the show. Will the rest of the season be liek this? god no, THAT would be terrible, but is it a bad thign to ahve an episode like this every once in a while? I, personaly, don't think so, and I will enjoy it until the mroe cynical episodes return :)

"You shouldn't smoke videotapes," they say. "Plastic fumes are poisonous and will do weird things to you." Weird things? Not unless the satisfaction of having enjoyed a great smoke is a "weird thing."

Not having seen the commercial, but having read the related posts, I think I can reasonably surmise that the "Musical" ep. might well be pastiche or parody of Musicals in general, so I'm not sweating it (won't be sweating it for a lo-o-ong time yet...)

I have confidence we won't be let down.

We'd BETTER NOT be let down...

It might even be an _hommage_ (sp?) to Dennis Potter.

Who he? The TV dramatist who died in 1994. He introduced musical numbers where you wouldn't anticipate them. _The Singing Detective_ is probably his best known work.
