The relevance of Trent

It occured to me that Trent has not appeared much since Tom and Daria became an item. Since Trent was the love interest for Daria beforehand, has he become irrevelant (If not obsolete)?

Well, we haven't seen the second half of this season yet. Last year, Trent was the one to cut through the bull and get Daria to face her feelings about Tom while helping sister Jane cope with the loss. While he's not the main man anymore he still has a place on the series, if not in a romantic angle.

Catch Trent's line after Daria storms off steaming over being called secretly popular at camp?

Why is Trent apparently pleased to have pissed off Daria? And why does Jane give him a quizical look in the reaction shot?

I never cared about Trent and Daria getting/not getting together, but here's some theories:

1. Trent found out after Daria and Tom hooked up that he liked being the object of the crush...and learned too late (how fitting for him) that he had feelings, too. Now, he gets to peel his sour grapes.

2. Trent -- though he encouraged Daria to stop lying to herself about her feelings for Tom -- is angry on Jane's behalf. He doesn't wear it on his sleeve, but secretly, his estimation of Daria as a person has diminished. Especially after getting to know her and figuring that, for a high-school kid, she had her priorities straight. Jane _is_ his little sister, after all, and he's quite empathic if, overall, clueless.

3. This is another mystery line, similar to Quinn's reply to Daria's frantic question about the appropriateness of informing a friend that you've just kissed her boyfriend. That line was open to much interpretation, but may have meant nothing -- kinda like the one under discussion here.

Without further evidence, I don't think it's anything more than mild teasing among friends.

But the crush obviously ended in "Jane's Addition", well before Tom and Daria "hooked up".

Of course, maybe actually seeing Daria as someone else's girlfriend was the trigger mechanism, rather than the end of the crush.

I would HOPE Trent got that anger out of his system in IIFY (the "Betrayal" song). Especially since he knows Jane has made peace with the issue.

I can't see Trent as a long-term grudge-holder. Especially when, in apparent sincerity, he's told BOTH Jane and Daria "about the 'Tom thing', it's gonna be OK". He's seen this sort of thing before, maybe been through it himself.

That's my best guess, too. But I wouldn't bet 40 pesos on it :-)
