A Few Questions

The truth is, I never watched Daria before it came on Noggin. See, I'm only 12 (almost 13), but that's not really an excuse. The main reason is because, when I used to try watching MTV (all my friends said it was so great) all that was on was the Real World, Road Rules (I'm still confused about this, are they the same show?) or TRL. I hated all three. I didn't know that anything decent could be on MTV (I assume from some of the posts I read that many of you don't like most of whats on MTV either). Anyway, since I am new to Daria, I would like to ask a few questions:

1. How different is the original Daria from what Noggin shows? What am I missing out on? I downloaded "Boxing Daria" (It was a great episode), but everything else I've seen is only what Noggin shows.

2. Is this newsgroup still pretty active? Because when I went on the Noggin messageboard for Daria almost all the messages said "Trent is so hot" "Let's start a fashion club! I want to be like Quinn!" (seriously) and also a bunch of Good Charlotte posts and messages where they feel they have to label others. I'd like to go to a place where people actually have intelligent discussions about Daria.

3. Do stores still sell Daria merchendise (I think that's spelled wrong, sorry)? I can't seem to find anything, and I would really like to get the books, DVD's etc. My parents don't like ordering things online.

The Noggin version is chopped. The problem is that they have edited out some of the bits that they believe might cause offense, from Jake's "dammit" raves to whole sections that, while many of us that have seen the originals think them inoffensive or, at least, pertinant to the story, Noggin believes that the whole thing should be handled like a cartoon for first graders and cuts it. There have been any number of complaints here about it; go to Google to see some of them.

I never use messageboards. There are far too many drawbacks (popups and so forth, moderation). This group isn't high volume, but it gets its share of posts from those of us that subscribe from various other areas (personally, I'm more active in the anime groups, but I occasionally post back here).

There isn't much Daria merchandise but it does exist, though some of it is now out of production. You could have a google for stuff, or look around some of the Daria websites (references elsewhere).

btw, did they cock up the C5 showing today or have I missed something? I was out, so when I got in and stuck the TV on, I was treated to USA High or somesuch rubbish. I notice that PCC has restarted the series (they showed the ep. about the Family Court today, and it's "Road Worrier" tomorrow at 5.30pm).

Key words - "noggin messageboard". Probably 75% AOL users, and very little intelligent life. Sadly, every post I attempted to make to that board wasn't allowed through the moderation anyways. Walmart carries the 2 DVDs online still, last I checked. Odds are you could have them order it for you if the store doesnt stock it. If you manage to break their anti-online policy, anything is basically available off Ebay.

Looks fine to me =). Since you posted through Google, it does the line wrapping anyways, making it rather hard for you to make an error. Aside from "merchandise" and "formatting", I didn't see any other misspellings, and I'm not exactly perfect myself.

Hee, that's pretty much how it happened with me too. When I was in high school I didn't understand anything about music or its purpose or anything anyway, so I never watched MTV, and it seemed like all the shallow, 'Cool' kids (the kind that Noggin's endless commercials always look down on) were watching it, so I just didn't. I was a geek. Ironically enough, it's because I was in the same place as Daria -- an outcast brain with social difficulties -- that I never got to watch Daria back when she was new.

Pretty? A little. I've been posting here for a bit, not a lot, but a few times. I read stuff here, and there's not *too* much of it, but there's always at least a couple of messages a day. It's like in Usenet limbo, halfway between 'active' and 'dead', I guess. ;)

Makes me think... maybe there ought to be a petition for people who didn't know of "Daria" until they started watching Noggin. Something of a "We're grateful to Noggin for introducing us to the show, now we want to see it uncut. Bring on the DVDs!"

As others have stated, Noggin has chopped up the episodes. But it also has *withheld* 12 episodes, including fan favorites like "Cafe Disaffecto," "I Don't," and "Boxing Daria." Here is a list of the missing episodes:

Oooh, this one goes way back. In 1966 there was a rumor that Paul McCartney had died in a car accident and that his death had been covered up against the wish of the other Beatles. He was supposedly replaced by a look-alike.

The remaining Beatles, pressured not to reveal his death, planted clues in their songs, notably one called "I'm So Tired," a passage of which is supposed to sound like "Paul is dead" when played backwards.

There are people today who believe that the Paul McCartney we know is a substitute look-alike, and some in England who claim to have witnessed the car accident and saw him die.

Most people, myself included, don't believe this.
