Season 3 Premiere Episode -- my little take

(just an opinion given by a "typical" American Darianite)

"Daria" rocks!

The "musical" episode of "Daria" was...quite touching. I can't believe it -- it was wonderful. I think I even got a bit teary-eyed. I know -- weird, right?

it was touching, wonderful, and excellent. I smiled all the way through. And I'm so glad that I recorded the whole thing because it is so...well, wonderful.

Highlights: the "manly" parts of the episode, where Jake and Trent actually *gasp* bonded; the part at the near-end of the show, where Jake and Trent discover Daria and Jane safe and sound and standing right next to them after the storm's end. *giggle* Trent actually hugged Daria and looked like he was really worried. Awwww... (romantic part of self takes over) ...I think Trent and Daria are the perfect couple and this was so wonderful to see... (gets mushy) ...OK, methinks I oughta move on. I even began seeing Brittany and Kevin as *gasp* a cute couple -- actually, they ARE perfect for each other -- vacant expressions matched by vacant minds.

Kevin's singing voice was quite good -- and so was Trent's (of course). Time for serious standing ovation: Wendy Hoopes, who did a superb job changing from Helen to Jane to Quinn not only in a speaking sense but also in a singing sense. Amazing...it was like three different people. Daria's singing voice wasn't half-bad, either. She didn't sing much, though. Ah well. I guess they didn't want our heroine to turn into a bit player in "Guys n' Dolls".

Jake was funny in the "God, Goddammit" bit. It completely cracked me up. So did the "duck phone" on Trent's dresser drawer. I thought, "Oh god no, please don't tell me our Trent actually got that on his own accord."

"They Must Be Worried" is another highlight, because of Daria's and Jane's inputs mainly. Daria was mostly right about Quinn -- she WAS worried for a while about the way she looked -- but then Quinn seemed to get more worried about the impending storm and (dare I say it) even a little tiny bit about her sister's well-being.

All in all a GREAT episode IMO. It gets the full five dancing, prancing, romancing ferrets rating.

(And...I saw the previews for a movie called "200 Cigarettes" too, which is a movie I'm dying to see just because of "Pump It Up" by Elvis Costello, "Our Lips are Sealed" by the Go-Gos, and the fact that my favorite musical/fashion/cultural decade was the '80s. Way coolness.)

Can I say this again? "Daria" rocks!

What a rip off, they obviously stole this idea from Alli & Scott! Next thing we know, Daria will be giving up eating or something.

Now that would be interesting: Daria developing an eating disorder. Of course, if there was an episode about one of the characters developing an eating disorder, the writers would probably pick Quinn, because for some reason most people think anorexia is something that only happens to teenage girls who have been pressured by society into becoming too thin.

I think it should happen to Andrea, it's about time they gave her something to do. Or Kevin - anorexia happens to boys too, sometimes. With Andrea it could happen sort of low key, each time she wanders into shot she's a bit thinner, but nobody notices until she's like a walking skeleton or something. If her screen presence stayed the same as now, it would be interesting to see how long it took viewers to notice, if they did at all.

It was very good, with a lot more of it on-key than I expected.:)

I loved that part, especially the end of that scene where they left to perform a daring rescue. It was like they were trying to prove they were men by saying "dammit" as much as they could.:)

Jake: "Your daughter and my sister are out there!" Trent: "That doesn't sound right."

(I had to rewind and replay that because I completely missed the joke, it sounded right the first time....:)

The closing credits music was a very good laugh too.

Yep. Some of the music was actually good enough to warrant listening to it again.

Hey, who else could stand either of them on a long-term basis? They're not bad kids, but the lights are on and nobody's home ...

A tough singing assignment too ... emoting without sounding TOO emotional. Daria was probably rather scared at that point, but she was keeping her outward cool, as usual.

Remember, Quinn's not stupid ... in her own way she's almost as smart as her sister. She's just VERY focused on being popular.
