Mike's Delayed Reaction Review- "Too Cute"

MDRR 1-9

Insecure- With Dr. Char preying on Quinn and the fashion club and attempting to woo Daria, one thing that could have slipped past everyone is Helen's insecurity. During a conversation about Brooke's nose job, she plunged herself into a tirade about how women are judged more by their looks than men(which is true, but beside the point) that ended with her contemplating getting a boob job.

Ugly Duckling- What is with all of the talk in this episode about Daria being ugly or hopelessly unattractive(I am aware that it was one of the jokes of the episode). Sure, she doesn't dress to flaunt any attractive attributes she may have but she still doesn't look that bad. despite the fact that she goes out of her way to hide it, she does have to have some 'natural beauty.'

Stay Out of the Shallow End- I'm not sure about the idea of think about something for a few seconds means your deep, but it does make some sense. There is some major friction between Sandi and Quinn in this episode. Quinn didn't really do anything to merit being cast out like she was but she also didn't do anything to dispute the 'shallow' label, either. She did take up a collection for her plastic surgery, you know.

Sisterly Love- Daria finally caved and told Quinn what she probably thought all along, that she is perfect, physically anyway. Quinn thinks that Daria is just playing one of her games, but she is being as sincere as she can be about anything involving Quinn. Under all of that hostile posturing is a whole bunch of caring. Damn conscience!

Like I said before, and I quote Austin Powers, "this sort of thing ain't my bag, baby." I'm not a fan of the fashion club heavy episodes and this one is no different for me. It has a good moral and does a decent job of getting it out(don't worry about your looks or how others see you). However; personally, I can't really relate to much of what I saw and I have to give this one a C+.

You probably already know this, but I'll say it anyway. Daria has often been portrayed as being unattractive in numerous episodes like Malled, for example the Fashion Club makeover project. This particular scene ticked my nerves further because they mentioned Jane as being unattractive as well. And remember the scene when they entered the hair salon and the lady said Daria was beyond help.

This is my prognosis: Perhaps the show is trying to say that in order to be the society's definition of being attractive, you can't rely on 'natural beauty' alone; it has to be camouflaged with make-up, trendy clothes, and bouncy hair. Which, of course, we all know to be untrue. Right?

i think it's pretty ironic that the show still portrays daria and jane as physically unattractive when they both got hit on in "The Invatation" and they were the only other students other than brittany that were noticed by Cloude and Romonica in "This Year's Model." ~po

Fortunately, I have yet to be hit on by a HS school guy, too, so let me rephrase it.

Unattached High School guys work on the same principal that (if I remember my chemistry right) atoms with less than 8 upper level electrons do. They want to fill that gaping hole in their persona with whatever is immediately availible.

(Immediately, a joke about HS students making covalent bonds comes to mind)

High School guys also have such low self-esteem, that they are hitting on you, but you don't realize it cause they don't have the guts to come out and say it.

Over the years I've read inteviews and articles about super models and Playboy playmates, arguably some of the most beautiful women in the world. One thread that seems to recur is the complaint that they never got any dates in high school. Some complain that they never get any dates now. Of course some of them admit they were "ugly ducklings" in high school and bloomed years later but the leading theory is that many men won't approach a beautiful woman, assuming that they have no hope of success.

I don't think they portray them as unattractive...I think they're showing that people aren't willing to look beyond the lack of makeup, and non-fashionable clothing, or anything that detracts from the popular standards of what's attractive.
