Obviously this falls in the "Daria Hunter"/"Fair Enough" genre, so it will be interesting to see the opinions here. I will say I did laugh quite a bit....but then I laughed at the two above-mentioned shows as well. I will say this episode was better than the other two in some respects.
I didn't-- sorta-- I never have seen 'Titanic.' Neither have I ever been to Disneyworld or seen 'Dances With Wolves.' *Shudder*
The shippers would have a fit if she called in a favor from Cupid for that-- besides, it's the Leprechaun who offered his assistance should she ever need it. Maybe Helen's Irish? <g>
I dunno-- Sandi never really struck me as the violent type-- the catty type, maybe, but not violent-- she'd worry too much about breaking a nail.
What is it with you and the catfights? ;-) I wouldn't go after Ms. Li-- I bet she's always packin' heat.
I did-- but then again, Barch knows Skinny pretty well enough to know that he was probably bullied into it.
rich.
Jane: You know, I don't know why people say we have a bad attitude.
Actually, the book was quite good. A friend of mine, who is sort of blindish, got the book on tape as a gift and I listened to it on the road. Quite good. After reading the book, I could tolerate K. Costner. Was anything more pathetic than Dirt World...uh, I mean, "The Postman"? Regardless I'll probably break down and watch it sometime just to see how pathetic it could be.
I don't think so, although it would make a good one-episode excursion. That relationship settled into a comfortable pattern a long time ago. They fight but they resolve their problems, albeit not in a way *I'd* be comfortable with, but it seems to work for them.
The nail thing might stop her, but I don't know...they've been on a slow boil for a while now. Before a comment like, "Don't be silly" wouldn't have given offense, but as of Daria Dance Party, it did. I could see a cat fight.
Meow. Considering she was just going through a gun catalog...
Speaking of episodes pretty much just being rehashes of season2 episodes, such as "Just Add Water" to "The Daria Hunter/Fair Enough" (as to saying that they all really had no point!) does anyone think that "Jane's Addiction" may follow along the same lines of "See Jane Run" where as Jane does something Daria doesn't agree with, and end up fighting about, and Daria talks to herself.........again (PLEASE GOD NO!!!) ***Lynnex***
I did holler "Oh NO!" with a laugh at the "Titanic" parody, but it actually makes sense. I've read recent news reports that the cruise lines are upset with that scene in "Titanic" because passengers on their ships are emulating it. They point out this is very dangerous as if you slip and fall overboard you there's no way anyone will be able to save you from being run over by the ship. It shouldn't be too unexpected that people from lawndale might indulge themselves with a little "Titanic" fantasy.
Also from the headlines: This obviously decrepit tub is probably a satiric jab at some of the nationally advertised cruise lines who have had some headline-making incidents/accidents.
I suppose the drunken captain might have been a reference to a certain tanker captain who allowed his ship to be run aground while he was drinking.
I don't worry too much about Jake and Helen sparring with each other. Couples who don't fight don't exist. They'll work it out--as long as they don't start hitting.
Extraordinarily good advice Daria gave Quinn: Just act like you don't care what everyone else thinks. Of course it's quintessentially Daria but I think it's good advice for everyone. How much better the world would be if everyone were more like Daria.
Another piece of the "Where's-Lawndale" puzzle: Lawndale must be near a large body of water. That's clearly not a river as you can't see the other side. And the drive to the dock was apparently fairly short.
Yes, but this contradicts everything in The Daria Diaries, where there is no mention of a nearby large body of water within easy driving distance.
This all corroborates the theory that Lawndale is both everywhere and nowhere. We are all citizens of Lawndale. Welcome. Remember, IQ limits are strictly enforced. ;-)
3 down, 179 to go. (sigh) rich.
Quinn: I can't be a brain! My friends will hate me!
Well I've never seen "The Daria Diaries." Looked everywhere--no one's heard of it. If I hope to ever see it or the "Daria Database" I'll just have to order it.
Just because there's no mention of of a large body of water doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. It might be simply assumed. Most of the population of the U.S. lives near the coast.
Remember when Daria pointed over her shoulder, pointing toward her bedroom window and told Quinn, "There's a bathroom down the hall, or there's an ocean--that way. I suspect the ocean is in the direction Daria's window faces and that it's fairly close. And, we know that that window faces east since the morning sun was streaming through it in "Daria!" That puts Lawndale on the east coast.

Try amazon.com. Don't ya get sick of reading that on NGs? That's everyone's answer to everything. Try amazon.com. But... I was able to find some obscure, out of print Heinlein books, and they Do seem to have the Daria Database. (in fact I bookmarked that page. It's here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0671025961/ref=sim_books/002-3621149- 3496065
unfortuneatly they will ALSO charge you an arm and a leg for anything thats hard to find.

Or on the west coast or anywhere in between. And the direction could be east or west or north or south, and there's still an ocean "that way" from most anywhere in the USA. This is Daria talking.
Yes.:) I really was expecting something like "I turn my back for one second and you've got your hands all over the first woman that walks by!" *Pow!* But I suppose she figures that any pushy woman (like herself) could easily get him to do anything she wanted. Which is probably why she pushed the competition overboard.:)
True. Though let's be fair to Timmy ... it's obvious that he really cares for Janet, and it was also very obvious that he didn't like Dee Dee. He held her waist only because she directly told him to, and he was clearly NOT happy about the situation.
Yep. Though the fact that he does things that he's ordered to do (even if he'd rather be doing them with someone else) sort of casts him forever in the role of a pawn. Hopefully seeing his lady friend's behavior will have the effect of making him a little more assertive without being quite so (literally) pushy.:)
I suspected that the cruise ship was going to crash into something the moment the captain showed up drunk. I didn't realize it was going to be EXACTLY like "Titanic" (except comic rather than tragic) until they started heading for the garbage scow.
By the way, Jake didn't exactly shine as a master of competence there. Abandoning the wheel was maybe not the brightest thing to do under the circumstances.
Maybe. Certainly it's ominous that the episode ended with them STILL fighting ...
Heh, that sure would settle the question of whether "Depth" was just a dream :)
Maybe ... but Quinn sure wound up on top this episode. Notice that nobody cared enough to "save" Sandi :)
Nah, too primitive. Btw, notice that Helen comes out on top of her every time?
For a moment I did, then I realized that Janet sees Timothy as pretty much a will-less object to be fought over.
Actually, he came across fairly well in this episode ... he helped DiMartino (though it didn't work, due to comically bad luck), and he had two ... um ... ladies ... fighting over him :)
At first I figured he was on his way to find the owner. However, in hindsight abandoning the wheel is a fairly intelligent thing to do - if you aren't there, you can't get blamed for anything that happens.:)
Not always. She lost her money in this episode, then there was "The Daria Hunter" (I think) where Ms. Li did some quick sabotage to Jake and Helen's car. It seems that Helen wins with words, but when it comes down to a face-to-face confrontation where Ms. Li can use something solid (like an unattended car, or the dumb luck of Jake wandering onto the scene and distracting Helen) to her advantage, she wins. I suppose it would come down to a catfight if they were in the same room and Ms. Li *knew* she was going to lose.
Who do you figure is the biggest loser in that fight? The interloping female or the male trophy?:)
Perhaps ... and he is the husband of a lawyer, so he might tend to think that way. Simply steering the ship out of the way of the barge might have made more sense ... though I do appreciate that the inertia of a big ship under way and his lack of knowledge of the water depths could have resulted in something even worse happening (like the ship sinking in DEEP water rather than simply bottoming in the shallows as she did).
lose.
Possibly. Helen is more honorable, and Ms. Li is a raving paranoid.
Not until they hit the Barge did I think: "Ice berg dead ahead!"
I think something is wrong in their relationship, and has been wrong, but I don't know if they would *divorce* them. Maybe seperation first. Season three has been hinting towards their relationship problems lately, I mean look at speedtrapped, they bickered all the way to the car. Plus the scenes where Helen ignored Jake in the kitchen were unecessary unless the writers were trying to display what's up.
I think it would be more of a blowout argument. The momentum it picking up speed in theat plot.
Nah, Ms. Li could always release the bomb sniffing dogs on Helen, it would be to easy.

I think her name was Didi. I think Ms. Barch knew that that woman was putting him in that situation, and that she was appealing to every guy in her sight.
It's ironically appropriate that the ratty old liner hit a trash barge :)
I don't think they'll break up permanently. Every indication is that despite their problems Helen and Jake really love each other. Jake, incidentally, looks to be heading for a major nervous breakdown, and I think Helen's been going a bit easy on him because she senses this.
Heh ... "appealing" is a nice way of putting it. She was doing everying short of painting landing arrows on her legs.
Well, he's already had a heart attack-- a nervous breakdown would probably do him some good-- that man needs a vacation from his family, it seems, as coping with them from day to day is waaay too taxing on his nervous system.
Sad to say, I think that even Depth Takes A Holiday was a better episode than Just Add Water. I'm bewildered by the fact that this is the only episode that didn't really interest me. Usually, they're so good! *fruitless plea to powers that be* Please please please get back to the good plots!

At first, JAW seemed like it was going to be a decent episode, but there were too many subplots left unfinished and not enough Daria. Come to think of it...there was no MAIN plot in this episode besides the fact they were on a boat. About the only parts that I thought were funny was the drunk captain and Mr. DiMartino's gambling addiction (which did not go as far as it should've by the way. Doesn't anyone else think he should've picked up Mr. O'Neil and thrown him off the boat after losing a hand? Then they could've had him find Brit and Kevin in the life boat and the three of them could've been stranded. Oh well...) By the way, I don't think most schools would have a fundraiser that requires casino gambling. At least not for the students as well.
I have to admit that I was waiting or Jane to take those chips and win BIG-- now THAT would've been worth seeing.
I remember cleaning out a certain band director and a couple of other students at a game of nickel-ante poker during a band trip... <g> It was either play poker, or go to some stupid amusement park-- the few of us who didn't want to go to the amusement park went out on the town instead, then played poker in the hotel.... ah, HS memories. ;-)
No, but I know a lot of charities have "casino nights" to raise money-- they're actually kinda fun. Whenever I go to one, I try to lose all of my money right away, just to see how quickly I can do it. (They usually give you a pile of chips with your admission-- you can't buy more chips, but you get more after about 1/2-hour or so, then you can use the chips to bid on prizes in an auction.)
Oddly enough, though, I'd never gamble for real money. Makes me cringe just to think about it.

Why not. Try Roulette. There is a system that almost guarantees you will leave with more money than you had before. Note that I say "almost". There is a very small (negligeable) risk that you will lose money and this is only due to the fact that a) casinos don't allow bets to exceed a certain limit. b) you don't get arbitrary amounts of credit. In a theoretical casino without these limits, the system I'm speaking of can guarantee (meaning it can be proven mathematically) that after a finite amount of time (this is maths-speak for "it may take millenia, but it's gonna happen") you will have more money than you had before. Now guess, what system am I talking about? It should be easy to guess with the above clues I have given. MSB
p.s.: If you're thinking about posting a message like "If that system really exists, why aren't you using it to become a millionaire", forget it. I give you the answer right away: In practice the limits a) and b) make the system pretty useless for earning real big money. Using the system will earn you only a few bucks per hour. It's a good way to kill time in a casino without losing money but any decent job has better prospects.
errr, I don't know what it's called, but is it the one where if you lose you double your stake until you win, at which point you go back to the original stake?
I've never understood the idea of casinos. Like rich people go there and basically sit around watching their money go down by a percentage each hour and then go home when the money runs out. I just don't get it, surely there's better ways to gain entertainment.
<thinks> TV connected to money operated VCR with Daria series 4 tape in it, $100 an hour. </thinks>

That would work, but in practice you might reach the limit too soon or don't have enough cash anymore. If you want a system that you can really use in real-life, though, as I said only for killing time without losing money, use the following:
Place a $1 bet on red. If you win, you have succeeded. You can leave the casino with $1 more than you entered with. If you lose, you place a $2 bet on red for the 2nd game. If you win, you have won back the initial $1 loss and an additional dollar. Again, you can leave the casino with $1 more than you had before (yoohoo, a rhyme, I like rhymes). If you lose again, you have now lost a total of $3, so for the 3rd game you place a $4 bet on red. If you lose again, you have lost a total of $7, so for the 4th game you would place a $8 bet. And so on. It is obvious that with these small steps it is almost impossible to reach the casino's or your wallet's limit before red finally turns up. Of course, theoretically there could be a 1000 games streak of black. That is why there remains a negligeable risk of running into one of those limits. After a finite number of games, however, red MUST turn up again. Mathematicians can prove that. MSB
Yep, simple probability. If there are only two possible outcomes to a repeated event the chance that one of them would *never* happen over any substantial period of time is infinitesimal.
Finally, something I can talk about! Is there anyone else out there that has never read a peice of literature just for the fun of it? Man, my attention span is way too short for that ;)
Now let's talk about how microwave ovens work or maybe a little semiconductor physics for a while!
Well, I'm apparently too dense to figure out the system-- I was a lit major who got as far as Intermediate Calculus and said "screw it." But that's okay-- even if there's a "foolproof" system of systematically winning a set amount of money, it still sounds a bit too much like work to me, and rather dull work at that. This is Yet Another Reason why I don't understand gamblers-- they spend *hours* studying systems for betting/playing/whatever-- hours they could spend studying something useful that could allow them to earn a little more $ on the job, or to gain other useful skills-- whatever. Anyway, they spend all of this effort working out a system that, in theory, will work *maybe* a majority of the time, but then-- whoops! You run out of money before the strategy pans out. Why? 'Cos someone else changed the rules why you weren't looking, either by figuring out a way to defeat your system, or by cheating.
There's a reason why Las Vegas is so big and tacky-- it's built on losers, not winners.
Solution? Invest in casino stocks. ;-)
Now that's just evil. Pure evil. ;-)

Yes, this episode definately falls into that category, along with DDP, all 4 were written by Peggy Nicoll. I liked all of her previous efforts including this one but a bit less.
The same formula in each of these episodes: A bit of the Fashion Club rivalry Kevin and Brittany in the a minor but funny part, to me anyway, Helen and Jake going with their kids(exception:DDP) for varying reasons. Slight change in this formula as Jake stood up for himself against Helen, it's the first time we've seen him put his foot down with her.
Daria and Jane trying to stay out of everyones way, rarely succeeding.
The situation always ends up getting out of hand.
Very little, if any, character development.
Many minor and varying subplots in each episode, no real solid #1 plot in any of these episodes.
I like shows like this because it puts the characters in all sorts of different situations, and it's always amusing to see each characters reaction and response to these situations.
The reason I'd rank this one a bit lower, however, is because this is the 4th time this formula has been used and it gets a bit predictable after awhile, which is why I wouldn't rank any on these (except DDP) on my top 10 list of shows. This one is no exception, I'd put it 7th or 8th in this season, and along with the rest listed, middle of the pack, at best, of all of the shows. It had its funny points and situations, just not enough of them.
Season 3 so far: 307,301:good, 302: down, 303: way, way, way down; #304:up; 305: down; 306: up a tiny bit; 308-310: best of the year(along with 301); 311: down a bit; and 312: down a bit more.
Hoping #313- "Jane's Addiction" will send us into the drought with a truly classic episode, like the season finales in the previous 2 seasons, A.J.
Yeah. Not a classic episode, but better than either "Fair Enough" or "Daria Hunter."
I put it right there with Daria Dance Party. I think they've finally learned that if they're going to do an episode where Daria doesn't actually make anything happen, they at least have to keep her on the scene, let things happen *around* her, so she can do the "Greek chorus" thing. The problem with the earlier episodes was that they had Daria completely divorced from the main action, only making token appearances in a basically irrelevant subplot all her own. In "Dance Party" and "Add Water" they just put her in the middle of things and let them happen around her. Works much better.
