The first time I saw Daria - - - [SHARE YOUR FIRST DARIA EXPERIENCE]

It was in Paris in the spring, along the Champs-Elysee. Ah, les jeunes touristes americainnes!

No, seriously. It was about 1993. I'd heard a lot about a controversial new cartoon show on MTV named "Beavis and Butthead," so I watched it one Saturday. This was when they were still showing B & B in the afternoon. MTV showed about 2 hours of B & B that Saturday, IIRC. In one ep, the boys start rehearsing their mud-wrestling act so they can audition for a local wrestling show. All of a sudden, this brown-haired girl with glasses who seems to know them comes walking down the sidewalk, and asks, "What are you guys doing?" After the boys explain, she rolls her eyes and says, "They're gonna ***love*** you guys," and continues on her way.

I didn't like B & B. I thought the show was kind of lame and sophomoric, but I was intrigued by the girl in the glasses.

About a year later, I was browing through a bookstore, feeling very bored, when I came across a book about B & B. There were profiles of the minor characters, and one of them was a certain Daria Morgendorffer. Reading the boys' comments about her, it occurred to me that she was a lot like me when I was in high school. I filed this piece of toon trivia away and moved on.

In 1997, I heard Daria was going to get her own show. I'd have loved to watch, but by now I didn't have cable TV, for a number of reasons. When I finally got it again, in the spring of 1999, I found the Daria show accidently one day while channel-surfing and have been a fan ever since.

Anyhow, that's how I became aware of Daria. Anybody else want to share?

Yes I first saw Daria on Beavis and Butthead too but didn't really pay much attention to her character. The episode I remember her being in the most was the one where they had to get jock straps and ended up using eyepatches, Daria saw them and took a photo for the school paper. I was a big fan of B&B at the time, found it around 1994 on MTV in the UK, thought it was just a music video at first.

I have a B&B book, it's called 'This Book Sucks'. Don't know where it is though, I should have a hunt for it and see if Daria is in there.

I was still in school when I heard about Darias own show so it must have been 1997, I really can't remember where I heard about it first but I do remember this girl in school asking me about a new show with 'the girl from Beavis and Butthead'. I heard it was gonna be from the view of the outsider making fun of the popular kids so I just couldn't wait to watch! It was shown in the evening, not sure what day of the week though. I loved it from the first episode.

Now in the UK it's on Channel 5 which I always forget about (I have to use Sky to watch it) so I've missed a lot of new ones. Thanks to Parmount showing it at weekends I've managed to get into the show again.

On that topic, the episode where Daria, Jane, Trent and his mate (Jesse?) were going to the music festival. Loved the bit where they were stuck in traffic and made the REM 'Everybody Hurts' reference :)

Like you and Steve Cross, I saw her in an episode of Beavis and Butt-head as well, specifically the episode "Citizen Butt-head," during a nightly string of B & B reruns at my Aunt & Uncle's house during some holiday gathering. I was aware of the controversy surrounding the show, and knowing that I was such an avid fan of animation, my aunt asked me if I ever saw the show. I told her I never did(I still didn't have cable TV). My brothers had friends who did have cable, and they saw more episodes of the show than I did, My cousin's kid sister(an early 90's version of Quinn in Queens, NYC) made some sarcastic comment about her appearence, and my reply was rather complimentary. I liked her sarcastic barbs at B & B as much as I liked the way she looked. Daria became my favorite supporting character on the show.

Over time, I saw other tapings of B & B Moronathons, which were supposed to be longer than they promised, brought home by my brothers from friends. During these moronathons, I often anticipated the appearence of Daria, and a good music video or two. When she finally got her own show, I was disappointed over the fact that I wouldn't be able to see it too often, since I still didn't have cable, but I knew I'd live. Up until the spring of 1999, that hasn't been a problem for me.

I do too, and she is. And despite what Martin J. Pollard says about her on OD, B & B DO do something bad to her in this book...they burn her at the stake.

Late in the first season, I think. I saw a Daria comic book at the supermarket checkout stand, and I was intrigured by the artwork. It was clearly a follow-up to a TV show, so I didn't buy the book but I did find the shop. Been hooked ever since.

I never really cared for B&B, so I never got to see Daria that way.

I first saw Daria when my wife was in the hospital. She'd had a very messy miscarriage, and she had to stay there overnight. The hospital TV only got about seven channels, but oddly enough MTV was one of them. We saw bits and pieces of "The Road Worrier". It was funny and made us feel a little bit better. We had missed the opening, so I didn't actually know what the show was called.

A few months later I was downloading "kiss sets" (digital paper dolls) from Otakuworld, and I came across a Daria set. I immediately recognized her from the TV show we had seen in the hospital. This renewed my interest enough to actually look up the show in the listings, and finally I managed to catch an episode. The first ep I saw all the way through was "Monster", and I was hooked for life.

I almost certainly first saw Daria (as in the series) on Channel 5 in my pre-satellite days. As an animation freak generally, I would be on the lookout for anything of this nature, and I noticed several episodes being played over one Christmas on C5 about four or five years ago. All early episodes.

I had seen Daria in B&BH before that, though I didn't twig on a spinoff until after seeing the first few.

First time, "Quinn The Brain" the first time C5 showed it, wasn't that hooked after 1 ep, but liked it after seeing my second "I Don't"..then went out and downloaded all the season 1/2 episodes off Daria Warehouse so I could catch up....

I probably saw her first on B&B, but I don't remember this. What I do remember was the first episode of _Daria_ I saw on MTV (I think it was "Invitation") and I remember thinking "Gee, I like her and Jane, they seem special -- it's too bad that they're gonna be fucked up by bad writing just like all TV characters."

I saw her on Beavis and Butthead while in high school.

Her own show started while I was in college, and I'd watched a few episodes, but while I found them entertaining, I was never really hooked. Between MTV's shotgun style scheduling and other interests, i think I only saw around 20 episodes in total, mostly from the first and second seasons.

Then, after not seeing it for maybe a year or more, I happened to catch a few of the later 4th season episodes. What grabbed my attention was the presence of Tom. I didn't recognize him from any of the other episodes I'd seen, and once I realized he was Jane's boyfriend, I was intrigued. It appeared that, unlike a lot of animated shows, time was actually passing. Then I caught the first airing of DDMD and was completely hooked.

The first episode taped happened to be "Write Where It Hurts." While it obviously didn't explain the characters, it still had an appealing mix of humour and insight to show that this show is a cut above others. The next episode on the tape was "The Esteemers", so I got to learn about show from the beginning and the rest is history...

Actually, I was searching USENET by keyword for something or other, saw a thread from this ng, and thought "Daria" sounded like a cool show.

A quick check revealed it was on that very night, I watched "Speed-Trapped" and haven't missed an episode since.

I caught glimpses of "Beavis & Butthead" from time to time, but I saw enough of those two to know that wasn't the type of show I wanted to see, so I never knew Daria was on that show (until much later).

I think I might have seen "Daria" listed in the TV Guide, but the first time I really became aware of it was when the TV Guide had an Editor's Choice dedicated to "Is It Fall Yet?". I think I mentioned it to a friend who watched the show, and he suggested that if I wanted to see the movie, I should watch the episode that preceeded it, since that episode (the famous "Dye! Dye! My Darling") explained a lot of what happens in IIFY? So, I taped both [address] and IIFY? and by the end of IIFY? I was hooked. The rest is history.
