Best Jake since #309 (Jake of Hearts), possibly even #112 (The Teachings of Don Jake). Superior variation on #301 (Through A Lens Darkly) with regard to Daria experiencing the feelings common to many people, although somewhat atypical for her. Even the peripheral characters added something. An immense improvement from #501 and a pleasure to watch.
Definitely an improved over Fizzle Out :-) but "rocked" is a little
strong. Better than fair, though. I'm sure some old-time Daria purists will
scream at the idea of Daria getting upset about a forgotten anniversary (that
Quinn sort of made up on the spot anyway) but Daria-identity-crisis episodes
are always good watching.
Being in the software biz myself, I ROTFLed at Jake's dot-com experience. I know people like that.

Definitely the anniversary wasn't the real problem. Daria didn't even know how long she'd been dating Tom until Quinn figured it out.
Tom taking her for granted? Part of it, but not the whole answer. More like they've gotten into a rut. When Tom was still dating Jane, Tom and Daria could talk about Fellini and Machiavelli for hours. Now they watch Sick Sad World and - not much else, it looks like.
Remember Tom's own description in DDMD of how his relationship with Jane fell apart?: "We started to get bored with each other".

It looks like the alter-egos now exist only on MTV's website. It also looks like they have a new policy of putting up a "clip of the week" from the previous week's episode, not the coming one.
That could be very troublesome. However, there are also some potential things to note that might indicate something a bit more positive.
Tom mentioned that he and Jane didn't actually go to anyplaces that might be considered romantic and/or "sappy" until AFTER their relationship began to fall apart. If Tom's telling the truth to Daria (and I have no reason to doubt that he is), then we should REALLY begin to worry when he begins taking her out to more romantic places in an effort to recapture that missing "spark", for that's a clear sign that things are really going wrong.
As for seeming to watch only "Sick, Sad World" -- well, maybe the writers just haven't had the opportunity to put in scenes where Tom and Daria's other interests were explored.
Still, Daria definitely felt they'd gotten into a rut, and maybe this crisis will help them find a way to get out of the rut. Definitely the last scene, where Tom and Daria are eating Quinn's candy and Tom is saying "Happy non-anniversary", indicates that they've managed to get through this crisis. Not to mention the fact that Tom's line makes me lol every time! :)
Definitely proof that Daria's human. I just wish I could tell her that she's not a hypocrite for wanting to be more like a normal teenage girl -- that it doesn't invalidate everything she believs in.
As for Jane, she can't exactly have a major part to play in this episode, as it brings back some painful memories for her. Besides, we have Tom as a regular, so not every character can get a major role or even show up. At least Jane's in the storyline!
The alter-egos and the end-credit songs aren't going to be on anymore? Drat!
That's all Daria and Jane *ever* watch on TV. And Tom and Jane watched it together too. Obviously SSW is a can't-miss program. Fellini will have to take a back seat. :-)

I noticed that last night, when they replayed Fizz Ed, at the very end before the credits, a song began to play before the credits rolled and the buzz clip took over. I don't remember hearing it when the episode originally aired. It might be a sign that in future airings (or in syndication) they may show alter-egos and play the music in full.
This is indeed the case. Glenn Eichler told me that full credit sequences were created for every episode, with songs and alter-egos and everything. However, it was an MTV network decision to scrap the credit sequences and replace them with the lame replacements. Needless to say, everyone at "Daria" is pissed about this.
However, the full credit sequences may show themselves in non-US showings of the episodes. I have no idea about syndication yet, but hopefully that's a possibility too. After Season 5 plays itself out they will have the magic number of 65 episodes, more if IIFY and the TV movie currently in production at MTV Animation are split into component episodes. For an animated series, 65 episodes is enough for an attractive syndication package.

The people at "Daria" aren't the only ones frustrated at this! I'm pretty mad myself. MTV can act like such idiots sometimes! Then again, I only watch ANYTHING on MTV if there's anything that even interests me, and "Daria" is one of those few shows that I actually want to watch.
I thought those alter-egos they showed during the Sarcastithon were imaginatively rendered and I mourn the opportunity lost to see them. Not to mention the end credit songs.
That should make Martin and all the UK fans happy.

We actually don't know that they don't talk about much anymore -- even in this episode, we didn't see very many examples of them interacting. The mention of what they did on their "dates" implies that they do have rather imaginative fun together.
That's because of Daria's conceptual context at the moment of that conversation -- she was afraid of being taken for granted. At the time she was out with him, she probably had fun -- she was basically doing the same sorts of things with him she would have with Jane (which was _why_, in retrospect, she feared he didn't really love her).
I wonder if Tom's picking out all their activities or if Daria is too. Tom might decide to do the same things he did with Jane, but Daria would certainly come up with different ideas than Jane would.
At least she can say "boyfriend" now. She's getting better.
That's one of the reasons it reminded me of "Through a Lens Darkly". Brittany's observation of how "we're all just human or something" kept running through my mind.

This episode got me thinking of another Churchill quote - I think he was referring to the Battle of Britain. "This is not the beginning of the end - but it is the end of the beginning."
I hope it's not the beginning of the end for Tom and Daria - but I do think it's the end of the beginning.
That was one of the things I liked least. Ms Li has always been somewhat sinister, even if comically so. I think she turned into a buffoon in this episode.
It wasn't just taking advice. She was a bit jealous of the attention Quinn was getting from the 3 J's. Trouble is, Daria doesn't really want Tom acting like any or all of the 3 J's. Which kind of put Tom in a no-win position in this episode, until he got Daria to talk the thing out.
I think it's obvious Stacy's the only FC member Quinn likes - even if she finds her trying at times (like the "accessory emergency" in "Mart of Darkness").
You may have a good point about Quinn's helping Daria out -- though her actions (in the short run, at least) probably hurt more than they helped. It took Helen's story, Daria's looking at the more unhealthy relationships around her, (and a little push from Jane) to get her to go talk to Tom.
I think that Quinn (unintentionally) set Daria up for increased expectations which ultimately might lead to disappointment. That's what Helen's story about HER anniversary indicated. And I loved seeing that she kept Jake's misshapen candle after all those years. It definitely was touching.
I think you're right. My memories were a bit vague on that part, partly because of the Tom/Daria scene immediately afterwards. Jake's failure to recognize the candle that Helen kept is very true to his character and indeed, a classic!
For those not in the know, the title of the song was "The Morning After", sung by Maureen McGovern and I believe it won an Oscar as Best Song (in a film) circa 1972.

Well I've been corrected by a friend of mine who says that 'Torn Between Two Lovers was actually done by a woman named Mary McGregor.
And to think, for 20 years, I believed that Maureen McGovern was the one who did that song!
I guess their names look and sound, not to mention their voices, too much alike to me.

Quinn may be still a shallow, self obsessed little flirt but here and there you see changes coming to the surface. In her own way she was concerned about Daria's relationship and attempted to help. Would the Quinn of Season 1 do that? I'd like to see more developments in that mold.
