Yay! I _really_ liked this episode. It was a true Daria, worthy of season one. Daria actually came out ahead in this one.

There were several developments I liked; either that, or I was on crack. :p Whatever the case, here they are, in no particular:

The Guys:
     Was it just me, or did the guys have more lines in this ep? I
felt like the males in the show (except Jake and, obviously, Treant)
had more character than usual. For the first time, I saw the three
J's, and they didn't come across _completely_ as just Quinn's Cronies;
they were actual characters, nearly equal in development to the
fashion club! Mack got a few cool lines ("maybe he could, if his arms
were still attatched"), though no more than in previous seasons (he
got some great ones in "Ill"). And, once again, we see that Upchuck is
smarter than he is usally portrayed. How so? It takes more than an
idiot to get the sount equipment to sound right in a GYM. That was
actually not a bad looking system he was operating. :)
     Speeking of Upchuck, did anyone else not find it incredibly
surprising that those two guys Daria and Jane ended up spending time
with at the dance? Though I didn't see it coming, it made sense when
it hit. Upchuck is clearly the most intelligent male at the school;
his potential intellect is probably comparable to Daria's. That
doesn't change the fact that he's a complete lizard, but his relatives
are probably smart as well.

Jane: It's obvious Jane is not the least bit lazy ("... haven't slept... two days..."). She works hard at her art, and put it to very effective use in this episode. (If only Treant could get such a break.) She very clearly is in it entirely for the art; she has no problem helping out someone she dispises if it means she gets to paint something big. And she didn't do what she joked she would, "set this aside and get a bag of chips and a boom box;" she did a remarkably good job. (Better than any of my own high school's gym dances.) Sure, Quinn took all the credit, but that didn't seem to bother her overly much. I think I'm starting to like Jane as a character better than Daria, though what would the show be without Daria?

Sandi: All I can say is... YESS! I was very happy to see her plans backfire. Her audacity in this ep was incredible! The rivalry is very clearly heating up. It was nice to see that EVERYBODY came out ahead in this ep, _except_ Sandi. Still, it's clear that on a popularity scale, Sandi is higher than Quinn, otherwise, the others would just tell her to "get over herself" and continue trying to plan. Even the three J's, who follow Quinn about worshipfully, went to Sandi's party instead of Quinn's dance.

Stacy: She _almost_ spoke up during the "planning committee" meeting, though she backed off as soon as Sandi glared at her. Still, I think this whole FC rivalry is reaching a breaking point, and I am convinced that Stacy will have a major part in it. If she grew a spine, that would change the whole thing. Oh, and does anyone know who that other Hemmingway is? I don't have access to the VCR right now, and I can't remember the name, but either there's some famous modern Hemmingway I don't know about, or Stacy confused Earnest with someone considerably more obscure.

I seriously think this ep will eventually be my favorite for the season, and perhaps my favorite overall.

Did anyone else think Sandi's voice was really "off" this episode? Usually it doesn't bother me much, it's an ok character voice, but for some reason every line she spoke this ep made me skin crawl.

It's also possible that the reason for this is that she probably had more lines this ep then she has had previously, in terms of an extended conversation. Or am I just imagining things?

I felt it was fine in this episode but "off" in "Depth Takes a Holiday." Of course, that whole episode was "off."

Upchuck is smart, but obsessed with his notion that the best way to get girls is to come on to every girl he is attracted to at random making snide little insinuations. The fact that not only does this usually fail to work but results in completely alienating the girls in question does not stop him from trying. (And we don't know that it always fails, we just know that we've never seen it work. Ask girls at random to have sex with you, no matter how crudely, and eventually some girl will say "yes"; I once knew someone who did exactly what Upchuck does and had occasional successes).

Note that Upchuck is attracted to two types of girls ... obviously pretty ones (the cheerleaders, the FC), and obviously intelligent ones. He hits on Andrea in the fair episode, he keeps a picture of Daria on his homepage, etc. If he weren't so obnoxious he might be able to make friends with some smart girls and have something grow from such friendships; as it is, no intelligent girl wants anything to do with him.

Too bad there, Daria and Jane might have profitted by *not* running away from them. Just because they displayed Upchuck's behavior at the end didn't mean they had his personality; they might well have been simply parodying their cousin. Oh well. Upchuck's reputation travels before him and shames his family ...

She's not. She just doesn't put much effort into things other than her art. Notice that in most of the scenes set in her room she is working on something while Daria sits or lies down on her bed?

The "sleeping with his guitar" bit aside, Trent does seem to put a lot of effort into his music. Most times we see him active it is doing something musically related.

Jane did it mainly for the challenge, secondarily for the money. Recognition by the school wasn't very important to her. The person she most cares about at that school (Daria) knew who really did the work.

Jane's more energetic than Daria. But Daria's more sensible. Jane's energy comes with a dangerous impulsiveness attached to it; Daria's her anchor on reality.

Heh-heh-heh ...

I think Stacy actually likes Quinn more but is intimidated by Sandi and her hold over Tiffany.
