*Daria . . . the season thus far*

After six months of waiting, I had built up quite high
expectations for season three of DARIA. It is not fair to say I had
*unreasonable* expectations, because, afterall, why should I not expect
season three to be every bit as good as the second half of season two?
Sadly, this has not been the case. The first four episodes have been
uneven at best, and at worst, downright awful.
This seasons, DARIA has lurched haltingly from the innovative
novelty of the characters bursting into song: DARIA! (I still have
major misgivings as to the concept of a musical Daria. On the one
hand, I applaud the producers willing to take a riskbut my gut
reaction tells me that ultimately it was a silly idea); to the outright
failure of: DEPTH TAKES A HOLIDAY. (Yes, Virginia, I get the lame pun
of the title) . . . With the other two episodes falling somewhere
in-between
THROUGH A LENS DARKLY is the only episode so far this season
that I truly liked. The only episode worthy to be ranked with some of
the best episodes of season two. What makes TALD the best of the four,
is that it focused on Daria and her struggles with her perfectionist
ideals and the reality of her own fallibility. This was a morality
play. Daria has to confront the intractable situation that her
perfectly idealized moral principles do not always translate to the real
world. Aunt Amy has a nice cameo, and there was some good
mother-daughter conversation between Helen and Daria reminiscent of
WRITE WHERE IT HURTS. Overall, a strong episode.
THE OLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL was a one trick pony. The writers
relied too heavily on the on the premise that Darias monotone voice
drove nursing home residents into fits of depression. While Brittanys
irksome squeak, and Kevins puerile stupidity are not only more
desirable, but further perpetuate the myth that to be attractive and
popular is an end-all in itself. Funny? I wouldnt give it more than a
mildly amusing. The fashion club sub-plot on the other hand went
along way to redeem this otherwise weak episode. I really caught myself
snickering at their bombastic, selfish, snobbish antics, culminating in
the laugh-out-loud presentation to Ms. Li of the go-go boots and belly
chain. Now that was funny!
Worse by far this year, undoubtedly the worst episode of Daria
ever conceived is: DEPTH TAKES A HOLLIDAY. The episode possessed
neither pathos, humor, nor Dariaesque cynicism that is the cartoons
halmark.
Quinn once again had nothing to do except wail and lament about the
possibility of Jake and Helen having another baby. (Even though this was
a trivial sub-plot, the potential for Quinns ousting as the baby of the
family was singularly the most interesting event)Helen and Jake are
reduced to lust crazed parodies of themselves (yeah, yeah, parents
having sex, very funny). So, we learn Daria has a full blown
school-girl crush on Trent. We knew that already.
Well, no sense in beating a dead horse. Its enough to say that
season three has thus far turned into a major disappointment.

Daria would be harder to get along with IRL than many people realize, precisely because she can be nasty. But I'd argue that her nastiness is more sarcastic than truly malicious, and that for this reason it would be possible to get along with her if one made the effort. Of course, her isolation is her own fault; people shouldn't be forced to make that much of an effort to get along with you. Daria's extremism gets in the way of her making friends.

I'll disagree about Daria being a bitch but only because I apparently define "bitch" differently. I do NOT think a female qualifies as a bitch because she's independent or assertive. Females have every right to express their opinions and insist on being granted their due. Women who do that are really more useful than the quiet types who never speak up. I define a bitch as a female who is simply mean, a woman who causes trouble for no other reason than to simply cause trouble, who is unpleasant just for the fun of being unpleasant. I've never seen any evidence that Daria behaves in that way. Ms. Barch--yeah. This bitch goes out of her way to cause trouble for the boys in her class, just because they're guys, just because her ex-husband isn't available to abuse.

Come to think of it, I don't know that you could really call Daria assertive either. She's often allowed other people to injure her without responding overtly. She only acts when she feels strongly about something and then often in a covert way. I can't think of a single incident when Daria has ever been unpleasant. Her attacks are often so subtle that frequently her victims don't even realize that they've been attacked. Quite clever! But I wouldn't call it bitchy.

My problem is the fact that, when certain others become offended and say as much, rather than explaining your position, you return insult with insult. If you must compare your sense of humor to Daria, then let me tell you what Daria would NOT do: continue to badger the idiots. Daria lets off a shot, then goes back to whatever she was doing.

Still, she has yet to encounter someone who, upon being offended, instead of leaving in a huff (like Quinn does), would stick around and continue to argue until they'd gotten their point across (aside from Principal Li, who it wouldn't be smart for Daria to mouth off at). I wonder what would happen if this were to occur?

I think she's not really bitter, just witty. I've known a few people in my time that would put people down, but be so funny about it even the target would laugh. An example in the area of professional comedy is Dennis Leary (gotta love that guy, even if he is an "Ass Hole" <g>). Daria I put in this same category, at the high end of the intellectual spectrum (as far from Leary as one can get ;). But it's all in the delivery. For all I know, you might be someone who could make me LMAO in real life; but, unless you do some serious annotation (like this: <in a Jake voce> "But I _like_ Rugrats!"), text is just plain an inadequate delivery for this style of humor.

No, she couldn't win, because the type I've described NEVER GIVE UP. You can have them in a corner of logic, have proven absolutely, to yourself, to your observers, and to the person himself, that that person is in the wrong, and that person will continue to argue. (My sister is a good example of someone who can do this when she really wants to; I have a co-worker who is the same). Once this point is reached, if you continue to try to get this person to concede, you only end up frustrated and angry; thus, the jerk has succeeded at his goal.

Tarvok has saved this thread, thanks. The way I see it, Daria should be on shaky ground with Miss Li because of past experience. I mean she called those mercenaries in "This Year's Model" (which may or may not have been traced back to her), she committed 'vandalism' in "Arts 'N Crass," Miss Li nearly got in a cat fight with Helen in "The Daria Hunter," etc. I think Daria would be quick enough to pick her battles carefully (i.e. she would make sure she had an open-and-shut case before proceeding), knowing full well that Miss Li is in a position to do some nasty things to her (she could also be considered bitchy, I guess).

So if this were happen, which I don't think it would, Miss Li would probably argue until it was obvious that she was wrong and then she would quit and say something like "Ms Morgendorffer! Two weeks detention."

ever conceived is: DEPTH TAKES A HOLLIDAY.
