After rewatching the end of Cafe Disaffecto I have been thinking about Andrea a bit. Her outfit suggests she's one of those no-good kids who take drugs, are bad at school, stay out all night doing things the parents don't really want to know. But at the end of CD she reads a poem to the audience. I think she's even written it herself. From the Daria Database we know that she also does comics. So she is definitely a creative type. I think that she may actually be one of those girls who are always home before dark, would never ever consider drugs and have good grades without much effort, the perfect daughter from a parent's POV (except for the outfit) I remember that when I was in school I had an awkward phase during which I looked like the type of guy who sleeps under bridges and has tried everything illegal from here to the moon, although that was never true. I was just projecting my dark feelings to the outside. I wonder if the same may be true for Andrea. I must say that I haven't paid much attention to her until now but I'm sure someone else has. What do you think about my theory that Andrea is Daria without Jane, i.e. a more lonely and gloomier Daria? MSB

We know Andrea drinks, and she seems rather unhappy and a bit angry, but there's no reason to assume she takes drugs, does poorly at school, or is promiscious (indeed, she seems "solitary").

There are intermediate possibilities, you know.
There are similarities. I suspect that Andrea may have been a prototype Jane; a character concept they considered for the role of "Daria's friend", and kept because she made a good background character. She seems to find Daria interesting, anyway.

She seems like Jane in some ways i.e. her methods of expression- particularly the comic book- is more like her, and also I don't think she's a good student, although she is intelligent. She does seem very isolated, and her way of dressing is probably an attempt at making an image for herself and becoming an individual (which works better than memorizing the railway timetables like Der Mann mit dem Gedachtnis. never mind.)

Yes. I don't think she has a lot of friends even out of school ... note that in scenes where she has been shown in a non-academic setting (such as "Cafe Disaffecto") she has been *alone*. By the same logic, I don't think she has boyfriends.
But of course now I'm building a castle of speculation atop a very flimsy foundation of fact :)
