Daria, Jane, Jodie, and Stacey. Pretty hopeless in Stacey's and Jodie's cases, probably.
Sandy Griffin, Kevvy, Ms. Li. If hate can include jealousy, Tom. I used to think I couldn't stand Upchuck, but he changed a bit in Season 5.
Are you kidding? Except the art teacher, all the teachers have serious "issues." I have some grudging respect for Mr. DeMartino, but his angry outburst in the classroom would not motivate me.
The seedy club where Mystik Spiral plays. What do they call it? The Zone? The pizzeria where Daria and Jane like to eat.
Hard to say. I was a club-joiner in HS, but I didn't get dates out of it like I thought I would.
I like to think that when Tom moved from Jane to Daria, Jane and I would start seeing each other. Jane and I complement each other. Daria and I were so much alike in high school, it would be like dating your clone.
I think Jane is cool. I grew to like her more and more as the show progressed.

People reading over my shoulder just started a betting pool over what percentage of people answer "Daria" and/or "Jane".
There is a side bet on how many of those people will believe themselves to be the exception to the rule that any conversation with Daria would most likely default to the equivelent of "Hi, my name is X" "Get the hell away from me." or that any attempt to make friends with Jane prior to season five will result in Daria entering Overpossessive Ultraspiteful "I'm not going to let you steal my friend" Mode.

This was in junior high. I suspect (for the purposes of this 'poll') that any highschool relation I would have had with Daria would be much the same.
Lawndale is my high school. Slightly exaggerated, of course, but pretty close.
Realistically speaking, I'd be one of those people in the background the camera pans over. Otherwise, I'd just hang out with Daria and Jane. Possibly Jodie. Seems like most of my friends are a combination of those three anyway.

I'd probably hang out at a library or bookstore with Daria, and at the pizza place with both Daria and Jane. Outside of school, I'd probably read. Inside school, I would probably be in the Spanish club, and might be in either the Glee club (I took Chorus when I was in high school) or in the Drama club. But I wouldn't be in both -- would take away too much time from my studies.

Yeah, I can see "I wouldn't have anything to do with Tiffany", but she hardly seems worth hating. Unless she tried to break my fingers. (Actually, I had fingers broken twice in HS, but both times were accidental, and occurred in gym class.)

Nope, not a caricaturist.
The first time happened while shooting around, warming up for a basketball game. I was standing under the basket, waiting for a rebound. This small kid, who had no idea how to shoot a basketball, hurled the ball overhand from about twenty feet on a line drive. It slammed into the bottom of the hoop and rebounded slam bang into my left middle finger. (Luckily I'm right-handed.) It didn't hurt that much after a few minutes so I went ahead and finished gym class. But by the end of the school day, it was swollen and purple. So I called my mother, who was also the nurse for our family doctor, and she said come over to the doctor's and have it checked. She wasn't happy that I'd let it go so long. I got X-rayed and, sure enough, it was broken.
(Interestingly, with respect to the Daria series, the small kid died the summer after HS graduation in a motorcycle accident very similar to the one Kevin had in "A Tree Grows in Lawndale". Only he was going a lot faster than Kevin and the tree was a lot bigger.)
The other time was in a flag football game. I was waiting to intercept a pass headed right toward me. Someone cut in front of me and deflected it just enough so that it hit my left ring finger head on.
So it doesn't sound like either one could have been deliberate, does it?
And that's not even counting the time my own teammate ran into me going for an interception, head-butted me in the chin, and made me get five freakin' stitches!
This thread sure brings back some wonderful memories.

Since I started this thread, I guess I should answer the questions too.
Who would I hang out with?
Hmmm. It's tempting to say Daria, but she *is* rather anti-social. And then there's the Jane thing. I know it's heretical to say on this ng, but I really can't see myself hanging out with Jane Lane.
More likely someone like Mack (some of my HS friends were the brainier sort of jocks, though I wasn't a jock myself, except for one year on the golf team.). Or maybe Ted. Possibly even Upchuck, though I don't think we really know how he interacts with other guys. He seems to have some interesting hobbies.
I still hold out some hope for Daria, though. She liked Ted well enough, and I was sort of a way-more-normal version of Ted (I even looked a bit like Ted in HS).
Who would I have a crush on?
I think I can narrow this down to two. Daria and Stacy. I really think I could avoid the Quinn obsession (though I'd probably get her a soda if she asked), but she'd be a useful person to know - since she's Daria's sister and Stacy's best friend.
Who would I hate?
Probably Sandi. Aside from her general nastiness, I'd probably blame her if I didn't have any success with Stacy (since I don't think Sandi would put me on the FC dating list). Which might not be entirely fair, but...
Who would my favorite teachers be?
Call me a masochist, but I think I'd actually like DeMartino.
And Defoe.
Least favorite teachers?
Barch (because she'd hate me for the obvious reason). O'Neill (because he'd try so pathetically hard to be my friend).
I'd probably end up disliking Bennett as well. Her confusing lectures would drive me crazy!

Probably downtown a lot. I spent my HS years in a little town with no downtown. The mall and movie theaters, etc., were 15 miles away. The town I lived in during my late grade-school years had a nice downtown probably a bit like Lawndale's, and I always missed that in HS.
Activities?
Hmmm. I wasn't much of a joiner (see? Daria will like me!). Lawndale has a lot more activities than my old HS, though, so I'd probably find something, depending on who my friends were.

Life's too short for hate. Kevin would probably get on my nerves. The fashion clubbers would be non-entites for the most part, but I'd probably hold Sandi in particularly low esteem.

As portrayed, they all have more or less serious psychological or social pathologies. Barch is the most extreme.
In school, around the band room, choir room or auditorium (or wherever the drama classes are), the newspaper room and the photo lab. Out of school...my room. The public library. Church. If there's a volunteer fire department, maybe there, if they have members under 18. As far from the mall as possible.

Might be why I liked IIFY as much as I did. Jane got hit on pretty hard (and sleazily, you can put Allison on the 'hate her' list) and at the end was really giving herself a good introspective once-over. She let Daria unknowingly boost her confidence but you *know* she's going to end up revisiting the doubt again.
I keep wanting to write a 'instead of season 5' fanfic about that. Just haven't figure out how to introduce the catalyst character and get things rolling.
Was it just me or did they kind of gloss/glide over that particular issue after IIFY?
I haven't seen season 5 (thank you stupid Polish MTV for putting on 'cribs' instead!) but from summaries I'd read they never seemed to get back to it.

Well my opinion is there are a lot more bisexual individuals than purely hetero or homosexual individuals. It's a continuous spectrum between them rather than discrete little boxes. :) The amount of bias varies from 'effectively heterosexual' to 'effectively homosexual' with the ends being people that just aren't likely to meet someone outside of their normal preference that would interest them enough to go after them.
My answer would suggest that I myself am in the middle but that's false. There just aren't that many males in Daria that I would consider worth the time. :)

As I would be neither a jock nor a would-be stud, I might fly under Ms. Barch's radar, but in any case the most hateful of all the Lawndale High teachers is (drum roll please)...Ms. Morris! Of course, she teaches the Girls' Gym Class (have they ever shown the Boys' Gym teacher?), so I guess I'll have to go with Mr. O'Neill, because people who try to 'involve' themselves in other people's lives like he does make my skin crawl.

Not unless she was in a crowd scene (she's probably somewhere in "I Loathe A Parade"). She also appears in one of the yearbook photos in "The Daria Database," but aside from that very little is known about her. She reminds me of the Woody Allen line from *Annie Hall*: "Those who can't do, teach, and those who can't teach, teach gym."
Well, if you were at Lawndale, you never know...Principal Li might be too cheap to pay for an additional gym teacher.

Mrs. Bennett seems pretty normal, unless you want to classify collecting "Fuzzy-Wuzzy Wee Bits" as a neurosis. (I think she's the only teacher at Lawndale who's currently married.) Of course, Mrs. Bennett and Ms. Defoe probably get less air time than the other teachers *because* they're more- or-less normal - it's a lot easier to write funny lines for psychopaths. ^_^

It has been, but the Daria writers do a better job than most at showing decent but flawed people. Mrs. Bennett isn't perfect - she can't stand up to Principal Li at all, even when she knows she should (as in 'Fizz Ed'), and she tries to get Mr. DeMartino to accept an obviously inadequate settlement in "Lucky Strike." Her relationship with Principal Li could certainly be developed, and I think the writing team could make something interesting out of it; the really difficult part would be relating it to the main characters, Daria and Jane.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the show is the way the writers suggest private lives for the supporting characters. (It's especially impressive given that most television writers can't even create plausible private lives for the *main* characters.) If the Daria staff were to create a spin-off called 'Lawndale' and fill in some of the blanks, I know I'd watch.

All interesting choices, but personally, I think that the only characters that are deep and developed to carry a show of their own are Jodie, and maybe Quinn if they are commited to character development over time...although I can picture MTV's suits pinching the bridges of their noses and thinking how they DON'T want to deal with another 'Daria' series and it's attendant baggage (i.e. fans.) Before anyone says anything to me about excluding Jane, I happen to feel that offbeat characters work better when they are slightly off-center, a foil for the main protagonist. Avery Brooks' character of 'Hawk' was the best thing about Robert Urich's "Spencer For Hire," but it wasn't as interesting in his own show "A Man Called Hawk."

No favorites, DeMartino is least favorite - I had a teacher much like him. Much bigger, though, and without the 'Nam flashbacks.
I never 'hung out,' or participated in any particular activities when I was in school. Lawndale doesn't have anything in particular that would seem to make much difference.

In appearance I actually think Daria is much better-looking, though she tries to hide it by the way she dresses. Jane doesn't have much of a figure. I'm not saying Jane is ugly, but no more than moderately good-looking.
Personality? There's a softness underneath Daria's cynicism. Jane never quite seems to lose her cynicism, even in her softest moments. I think this is especially evident when the two girls smile. Jane always has a bit of a smirk when she smiles, but Daria can smile for real (even when she's trying to suppress it).
Tom tried to get Daria to smile several times before he even knew her that well. Trent and Luhrmann as well. Like they all sensed there was someone a bit cuddly under that cynicism.
(There! This ng will be kept active for months by Jane-fans flaming me! :-) )

Jane's more self-reliant (she had to be, with Trent as her only protector), but Daria is more independent minded. Jane wants to be liked and loved more than Daria does -- Daria can take it or leave it, and will quickly reject someone who fails to meet her standards in any manner. Jane is a more tolerant, easy-going sort of person.
Jane's cynicism is based on the fact that all the people who should have been there for her have let her down in one way or another. Daria's "softness" is based on the fact that, despite her complaints, her family has always been there for her to fall back on. Jane would be more easily approachable than Daria, either in a friendly or a romantic sense. She does have high standards of her own, but she's more willing to give people a chance than is Daria.

Well, being that I was never fond of school, I'd say everybody would be my least favorite, even the good ones.
I doubt I'd hang out anywhere. Considering that it's the early 1980's I might try a former post office that was converted into local deli with a small arcade in the back, but I'd suck at the video games just like I do now...that is when I'm not out writing graffitti, or trashing the property of my enemies.
Nothing orchestrated by the school, that's for sure. More than likely, I'd be concentrating on my own artwork. Hopefully, the Lawndale P.T.A wouldn't crush my career ambitions under the pretense of "preventing me from throwing away my future," as easily as my real school system did.
