Sarcastathon

Well, I definitely enjoyed the first day of the Sarcastathon. I got to see Esteemsters and Cafe Disaffecto with the original music left in - I'd only seen those two on MTV's tapes before.

And I got to see three episodes I'd never seen before - Road Worrier, The Teachings of Don Jake, and Arts 'N Crass.

Road Worrier won't replace "Pierce Me" as my favorite Daria-Trent episode, but it was worth seeing. I liked the way we "heard" Daria's thoughts, and got into Trent's head a bit too. I'd also like to see Daria dress in jeans and t-shirt more often.

The Teachings of Don Jake - I never quite got into the subplot about the Lane Family Reunion. Maybe it'll look better at a second watching. The Morgendorffers' camping trip was hilarious, though. However, I'd have liked to have seen Daria eat a few glitterberries :-) I know, who would have called 911? :-(

Arts 'N Crass - I didn't think Jane would let Daria dictate artistic subject matter to her - that part didn't quite ring true. But I loved the way Helen put the legal screws to Ms Li.

Tomorrow: "Monster" is the only episode I haven't seen yet - but I'll probably watch the whole thing. I can't wait to see Daria and Jane's lead-in to DDMD :-)

And yes, I'd LOVE to see the lead-in for DDMD -- that would be worth seeing, considering the problems they had in that episode.

I've been having my own Sarcastathon...since Tuesday (or Wednesday, I forget) I've been watching my videotapes of all the episodes. Up to now, 34 episodes down. The only thing I need the MTV Sarcastathon for are the lead-ins. (Missed a couple of them, though.)

You must have been loving every minute!

I was a little annoyed during the lead-in to "The Teachings of Don Jake" when Daria and Jane referred to ploys to get people to watch episodes they've already seen. HELLO, MTV! All of us haven't seen all the episodes! Rerun them in sequence like a real TV station!

And Daria's depth can be measured in fathoms.

It would be hilarious! It would be frightening! It would be epic!

Until you see angels cracking seals. Then you had better air-lift Daria to the nearest hospital and get her stomach pumped ASAP.

Jane did drag Daria into the art project, under protest. However, it was Daria who came up with the 'artistic subject matter'. Jane then created a painting that illustrated Daria's idea.

Hello, MTV! Another camping episode, please!

Yeah, I got the premise of the episode.

But Jane doesn't usually (this is the only exception I recall) build her art around someone else's idea. And the sight of Jane stumbling over the meaning of her own painting, and then having to let Daria explain it to Ms Li and Dafoe, seemed very un-Janish to me.

I spent 4 hours in Lawndale Saturday and I loved it! It was a treat to see eps from seasons 1 and 2 for the first time. I used to wonder why Daria is often described as a brunette. Now I know. That red hair was a dye job.

Was anybody as amused as I was by the joking about a Lesbian relationship between Daria and Jane? I'm referring to the intro to Arts and Crass where Daria's standing behind a screen showing bare shoulders and complaining about how chilly she's getting. At one point, she says to Jane, "This [meaning that she's posing nude for Jane] will just revive all those rumors about us." Then, the intro to I Don't right after that shows Daria as the bride and Jane as the Groom. Or maybe just ring-bearer, since she's carrying the ring. Anyway, Jane's in a tux, and looks good in it. I cracked up at both of these intros.

When I first started watching Daria, I fantasized about her and Jane experimenting with Lesbianism. I KNOW, I KNOW, I KNOW they're both straight! I saw Is It Fall Yet?

Idea for a fan fic: Sandi tries to damage Daria's reputation by spreading the rumor that Daria and Jane are lovers. Anybody wanna go with that one?

I know there's been a fanfic in which Jane and Daria were lesbian lovers. Could MTV being paying tribute to fanfics? Naaah.

Today's Daria Dance Party lead-in showed them in somewhat similar getups - with Daria in the male costume.

I'd be surprised if that happened. Besides, the word's probably gotten around now about the Daria-Jane-Tom triangle. Lawndale High's students probably have enough trouble believing Daria and Jane are even speaking to each other.

I saw three new-to-me episodes yesterday (Don Jake, Road Worrier, and Arts N Crass) but I saw Monster for the first time today - great episode! Best of the four! (with apologies to 'shippers who think Road Worrier is the greatest TV episode in history. Yes, I am a Thomist.)

Definitely one of the best Daria-Quinn episodes ever. Some of the mutual identity switch theme so prominent in "Quinn the Brain": Daria's dream in which she was talking to a Fashion Club of Janes was classic! As was Quinn dressing as Daria for her Fashion Don't party. And Quinn ranting about her pores- ROFLMAO!

And some good motherly advice from Helen - even before "Write Where It Hurts".

However, thumbs down on the episode title.

No, she won't. But I think a deeper message, also seen in the other Daria-Quinn episodes, is that Daria and Quinn are much more alike than either suspects - or at least will admit.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Daria and Quinn are just two sides of the same coin.

They like to think they are miles apart in intelligence, personality, and temperament, but they are not.

Each sister has the above qualities, the difference is how each sister prioritizes and applies them.

These qualities are also defined and influenced by the environment Daria and Quinn were born into.

As it stands now Daria is the oldest, and more intellectually inclined. Would Daria have been this way if Quinn, her younger sister, had not been born?

Sibling rivalry played a large part in stunting Daria's social skills. As Quinn got more and more attention, Daria began fighting a rear guard action against Quinn over her parents affection-and losing miserably.

Quinn was younger, she was cuter, and she was probably precocious.

Daria didn't stand a chance.

I think Daria's retreat into all things academic was a defensive move. To immerse herself in something that could not be taken from her by the younger sister

(Like recognition, approval, and acceptance).

Daria finally gave up on getting these things from her parents, and from the rest of the world in general.

Now, what if this was not the case? What if things were different?

Take the following scenarios:

Scenario #1 If Quinn was born first, and Daria second. Quinn could have ended up the brain, and Daria the shallow popular sister.

Scenario #2 If Quinn was born an only child,she could have become a worse 'monster' than the one she is now (spoiled rotten with no conscience, OR a sister to keep her in line).

Scenario #3 If Daria was raised an only child she could have turned out like Quinn...

Scenario #4 ... or worse, Daria could have been the 'ultimate monster'.

A combination of intellect, beauty, personality, selfishness, ruthlessness, and shallowness that would make Sandi seem like a country saint.

In short Daria would become an anti-Christ.

<shudder>

I think someone has already done a fanfic of a Daria who fit the last scenario.

I left out a few mundane scenarios from the list. I was weaving a dark fantasy in the last post and simply got caught up in it.

Believe it or not Scenario 5 and 7 were more down to earth.

Scenario # 5 would have Daria become an overachiever like Jodie Landon (without the 'Queen Of The Negroes' albatross that hangs around Jodie's neck).

Scenario #7 would have Daria be more average, almost to the point of boring.

I'm up to Scenario # 10 and still going...
