does anyone have daria sound files from episodes?? i know there arent any redily available on the web....so can someone post to a binaries ng? i need them for a powerpoint project and i'v had no luck at all....

Also you could capture some sounds yourself, after all all you need is to plug the audio from your video recorder into the audio in of your sound card :)

Ah they may be mp3 encoded. later versions of Windows/Media Player can do this, and in typical M$ fassion instead of allowing windows to use .mp3 instead of .wav they just desided to call them .wav just to confuse people, so it might be worth throwing them at an .mp3 player (dunno the names of any on the Mac but I'm sure they exist :) ).

There's a plugin at the top of the archives page where you can install compatability with MPEG Layer-3 WAVs. I'm not sure if this works with macs, but PC users can adapt easily with the plugin.

I have to apologize, but WAVs can be rather large under PCM formats, and I've only got so much space to work with (I'll be surprised if I can fit WAVs of all of Season 4 and the movie). :-)

For those that want to start their own sounds sites, here's something that I learned: I've found it best to make a WAV of an entire episode before taking bits and pieces and making soundbytes (An episode without commercials under 22,050hz can be around 25mb). It can get aggrivating just to fast-forward and rewind through episodes for a specific segment to record.

It's funny, though, that at first, I was actually recording the episodes onto audio cassettes and THEN to the PC before I started recording to PC directly from the VCR.

The way I used to do it was record an episode at 44khz 16 bit mono - took around 100 megs or so per ep, and then downsampled it to whatever I was using (16 bit 44khz mono mp3 and 8bit 11khz mono PCM wav).

*shrugs*

If you've got space to spare you can hold onto old episodes so you don't have to record them multiple times if you decide to grab different wavs out...

*ouch*...that explains why the quality was so spotty on the early ones. Glad you're doing it properly now tho' ;)

What you get in that situation is an mp3 wrapped in a wav file header. Windows media player can understand it if you have an mp3 codec installed (indeed that's how these hybrid files usually get created), but many other programs don't. I've tried uploading mp3 encoded wav files to my website before and they always cause trouble because a lot of people's software doesn't understand them. The best thing is to use a little 28KB utility called StripHdr (which comes with the shareware ripping program WinDac) to strip the wav header off, resulting in a raw mp3 file. Give it an mp3 extension and upload that, as it will be playable both by Windows media player and ordinary mp3 players.

Mp3's or realaudio are the only type of sound file that's worth putting up for download on a website IMHO (apart from extremely short soundbites that can be done as normal PCM WAV files) as otherwise the file size is simply too big. You have to reduce the quality to appalling mush and even then the files are still too big for comfortable downloading. For website use I use a free Fraunhoffer codec which produces good quality sound even at 32 Kbits/sec mono or 56Kbits stereo. You'd think the quality at that bitrate would be awful but in fact it sounds fine as the codec uses MPEG2 Layer 3 which only needs half the sampling rate compared to the MPEG1 standard that a lot of mp3 programs use. For an example check out this tune on my site: http://www.xerez.demon.co.uk/tv/holmes.mp3 which fits 33 seconds of decent quality stereo sound into a 228KB file.
