In DDMD, the morning after the kiss, Jake said, "Good morning kiddo, still got stardust in your eyes?" or something close to that.

Now for you young-uns, the phrase "Stardust in your eyes" means that your in love or at least had an amorous encounter. The only way I can see why Jake would say something like that, is that he saw Daria and Tom kissing in the car. Jake knew what had happened, but being Jake, didn't realize the importance of the event.

Anyone else catch this too?

Me neither. I think you're pushing it, a lot. If the writers had meant for Jake to witness it, they would have made it more explicit than his typical-clueless good morning pleasantries. And for good measure, I have *never* heard "stardust in your eyes" being a reference to a sexual act the previous night. It's a real stretch, but an interesting thought anyway.

Besides, Jake is not one to pick up on things right away, and he was pretty upset over the squirrel thing. ("You can't drown them either?! What kind of town is this?!") But it does make you wonder *what* he meant by the stardust thing, if he meant anything by it. I thought about that a lot when I first heard it, too. I suppose we'll find out soon enough.... -gem

Can't "stardust in your eyes" just mean that you look sleepy - that you haven't fully come awake? Jake just mistook her downcast look ("do I tell Jane and what do I say?") for sleepiness.

Interesting, though, to wonder who actually answered the door and talked to Tom, and what conclusions he or she came to.

When Daria asked Quinn whether someone should tell her best friend if she has kissed the best friend's boyfriend, I half expected Quinn to ask "Daria, does this have something to do with that guy who came here last night? Isn't he Jane's boyfriend? Daria, YOU DIDN'T! NOT YOU!" I know Quinn doesn't pay much attention to Daria's friends, but after a year she may know Jane's boyfriend by sight if not by name, if only from seeing them in the pizza shop.

That's what I'd figured at first, Jake isn't exactly the brightest man in the world, but he's not as oblivious as many think. Remember from "Psycho Therapy" that it's pretty much "a smokescreen of cluelessness", so he may know whats happening, but in his own way. This theory is very valid, but for now I'll just chalk it up to Jake thinking Daria had just woken up. The movie may tell us (Hurry up and be August 27th already, dammit!)

I would've expected something to, that it would've had something to do with Quinn just at least noticing Daria was talking about herself kissing a guy, not necessarily Jane's boyfriend or that boy who came to the door last night. By all stretches of the imagination, I don't see how Quinn would know anything about Tom, seeing as she tries to avoid anything Daria at all costs. Then again, all evidence suggests Quinn is inexperienced at kissing and such herself, so that may be why she didn't notice anything about Daria the next morning.

Maybe he was just reading the paper in the morning, she did look out of it. He might have meant that she just looked sleepy.

Jake obviously meant it as a reference to that stuff in your eyes when you wake up in the morning. If he saw Daria in a car kissing a guy, I think he'd have had a major reaction on the spot. It was just something the writers used to make Daria feel a bit more uncomfortable.

It's more a matter of Jake not being aware of who Tom was. And wanting to let Daria know that he thought that it was all right that Daria was "dating" (which is probably how he would have interpreted what had happened). Remember, in the past, Daria being "boy-crazy" has _not_ been the problem from the elder Morgendorffers' viewpoint, quite the opposite.

That's the way I'm looking at it too. As for why he would have seen her and Tom together in the car smooching, well, here's this boy asking about Daria, then waiting outside their house in his car.

Now, as a father of two teenaged girls, and one of them who hasn't been dating very much... Well not at all really... I'd be looking out the window at that car every so often to keep an eye on him.

Of course the movie will confirm or deny all of this speculation...

Or, as someone else said, Jake could be just acting like his clueless self. The phrase "stardust in your eyes" relates to love but the phrase "sleepydust in your eyes" referrs to the whole sandman coming at night and making that stupid crud that forms in the corners of your eyes when you sleep.

Now - was he implying that he knew about Tom OR did he just get the idiom wrong because he's Jake being Jake.

I would lean towards the second option because:

1. He seemed to be making empty conversation as always and wouldn't notice if he made any sense or not. 2. It would seem a perfectly harmless statement to Jake but mean something to Daria and the viewers (sparking enlightening conversations on a.t.d.) 3. My feeling is that if the Daria writers _really_ wanted to imply that Jake knew anything about Tom, they would have shown him peeking out the window at them. It is not in the style of the show for them to be this subtle.

Like you said it was probably a harmless statement. Jake was being nice to Daria. Thought it might cheer her up to say that without understanding the implications (as we do).
