The mere fact that Tom has a mullet instantly makes him white trash, regardless of his "cultured upbringing". I for one am not falling for it. Ever see that horrible film called "Lucas"? I think Tom's faking it. Someone with money would never have such a ridiculous hairstyle.
There's no denying it's a mullet either. Short on top and long in the back.
You have lost me. What does the subject of fish, whatever species, have to do with Tom? And why are you so insistant that he has one? Not to mention what colour his trash is. Does he paint it white before he throws it away, or does he just have an affinity for throwing white stuff away?
Fishing! Just like a man to go fishing. He spends the day outdoors, while the poor woman has to clean it and cook it and throw the bones into the trash - who cares if they're white or not?! Men! They're all alike! Twenty-two years of my life ....
You know damn well the kind of mullet I'm talking about, but you Tom loving freaks enjoy deflecting the truth so you can defend such a worthless character.
MULLET: white trash hair style where the back is longer then the front.
Nope, we just enjoy winding you up. Especially as you seem so hell bent on making a statement then ramming it down our throats. Ever thought about running for office?
So we must all now shave the backs of our heads in the fear of being labelled otherwise. Or maybe shave the lot off to be extra sure. Step aside, Sinead O'Connor, the baldies of Lawndale are taking over!!!
On May 10th, "Bernie" felt compelled to promulgate the following:
I obviously erred in defending this foul-mouthed troll last week over the "white trash" comment. To Jeg7777, my apologies. Clearly your "he sees it in the mirror" retort was right on the money.
Lots of the best people in our society judge people by their hair style.
The United States Marines. The first thing they do is cut your hair off. Officers keep holding lots of inspections just to make sure you don't have more than they do. I think it's a Sampson thing.
Disneyland will hire you if you have a criminal record, but they won't hire you if your hair is too long.
Is there a town in the US that is so small, it DOESN'T support a hair salon?
The entire US Media versus Hilary Clinton. I hear that Hilary was just one haircut away from trying a purple mohawk out of despiration, before the media finally let her out of hair purgatory.
Hair Club for Men.
My Father.
Airport HariKrishnas -- their haircuts certainly tell me everything I need to know about them.
Punk rockers, skinheads, and rappers. Just when I thought the Marines and Walt Disney were bad; these idiots come along with fluorescent hair, skull tattoos and $300 dredlocks that can't be washed for months at a time. What an interesting way to rebel against Society's hair fixation!
* * *
The way my hair looks is obviously more important than the books I read or the way I behave toward other people.
So let up on Bernie. He's just trying to fit into a confusing world full of dumb priorities.
I'm sure we would cut him some slack if he didn't put his views forward in such an obnoxious way. Yes, there are prejudices out there - goodness knows there are enough blonde joke in existance to gag several Bernies, but his "I'm right and everyone else can go fornicate" attitude is somewhat of an open invitation!
Just be glad that this group hasn't been visited by Gaza! Now there's a rolling bundle of prejudices if ever I read one!!!
Oooo, I'm a pseud, am I? You seem so willing to label everything and everyone. OK, if you really want to go down that road, let me introduce you to a peculiarly English label applied to people with a tendency to nurse a topic to death.
We call them Wankers. Be careful not to rub it raw, boy!
You really hate Tom, don't you. Or is it that you can't stand to see Daria or Jane make it? Tell you what, I'll get you a tryout with the team. You would give Kevin a hard time, I'm sure, but you must have a use /somewhere/.
I don't know about Bernie, but my problem with Tom is that he dealt rather coldly with Jane. In terms of sexuality, he seems to be a very patient and understanding guy, especially for a guy in his late teens. The impression we get from the eps is that he hasn't gotten all that far with Daria, yet it doesn't seem to be bothering him (yet). It's been six months -- there are a lot of guys Tom's age who'd dump a girl who didn't put out after the first few dates.
I don't give diddly about his _haircut_, whether a mullet, duck's ass, or mohawk. (Though the latter would look kind of weird on him).
That's fair enough. The problem is that just like parenting, there's no such thing as a Dating 101, and if Tom dealt coldly with Jane, there was at least some attempt to reason it out when things finally came to a head. That is a lot better than the usual acrimonious breakup scenes that you might usually expect where each yells at each other, then he storms off leaving her in tears etc. etc. with bells on.
Concerning Daria, from the little I know of that story (I've yet to see series 5, thanks to MTV and Sky TV, both bastards but of different stripes), the actual outcome of that pairing has yet to resolve. We shall see. Maybe he'll turn out to be a jerk. Who knows? Isn't that the whole point? If we know the outcome, or in Bernie's case, we pass judgement on circumstantial evidence, there would be no point in wading through the rest of the series.
Ditto. All this hair talk is getting too Fashion Club for me... :)
Oh, just call me Chika. (Or Chris) Miyuki is my collaborator...
I know that is what she says, but Timbo is more inaffectual than effeminate which makes me wonder if she says that to convince herself that it's OK to shag him. Either because she wants an excuse to do it or because he is so unmanly that it is difficult to see him as a lowlife scumbag who she has slaved for day and night just so that he can leave her with no life, less worth and that curious rash on her chest...
But then I try not to read too much into something like that. Just in case Barch comes looking for me... ;)
Well, I think Ms. Barch won't come looking for me since I'm a woman (a member of the superior sex, in her opinion), so I can talk. I think that if she * is * looking for an excuse to make out with him, it's because he's so ineffectual as a man that she * can't * see him in the same light as just about any other man. And yes, I think Ms. Barch is attracted to Mr. O'Neill in part because he's so easy to dominate.
Interesting that Barch, although she constantly spouts venomous hatred for all men (except one), dresses to kill: high heels, tight skirt, blouse with the top buttons unbuttoned, lipstick. And it's not just a dress code imposed by Ms Li; look at the casual way Defoe dresses.
Even her excuse that O'Neill is "sensitive" is a load of bull-pucky. We saw clearly (as if it wasn't clear before) in IIFY that his sensitivity is a sham and a pose.
I've always contended that O'Neill's warm-fuzzy-friendly-positive-helpful presentation was just a pose. What he really is, is a person who seeks to control people. Ever notice how he's constantly trying to twist things his way? In "Cafe Disaffecto" he takes his own idea for a 50's style beatnik coffee-house and attributes it to Daria. "Let's make Daria's dream come true!" (It's his, if you recall the ep.)
Or when he doesn't let the kids play outside because "they might hurt themselves" when it's his own allergies he's concerned about.
O'Neill's concern for others was shown up as phony in the pilot (which I finally saw in "Sarcastathon") when he leads a class on self-esteem and never bothers to learn anyone's name. "You. You. You."
To be fair, he later got the idea to use seating charts to remember everyone's name.
RATHER MINOR SPOILERS FOR "SAPPY ANNIVERSARY" and "ART BURN" . . . . . .

I wouldn't have thought he was trying (much less succeeding) at controlling Barch until "Sappy Anniversary" and his little crying jag. ROTL!
Although I think his faade isn't JUST to control people. It's mostly put on for his own benefit. He really believes his own act.
Yep.
Not to mention the fact that he COULD have let Daria and DeMartino supervise the kids outside, if it's his damn allergies that are REALLY the problem.
He didn't even remember Jane, who had taken the class six times. Just: "You look familiar."
And then pulled the wrong chart and confidently called everyone by the wrong name!
Give him credit for remembering Trent in "Art Burn", though. I guess he's getting better with names.

Minor correction -- he remembered Trent's name in "Lucky Strike", which came just before AB. Of course, Trent's painting something on Mr. O'Neill's car would be good reason to remember him.
Quite right. I guess I need a seating chart of season 5 episodes. :-)

Quinn: But you can't seem them, can you? Oh my God, they've been... They've been zooming! You better not zoom that thing. Stop zooming, I mean it. If you can see any of my pores on camera, I swear, I'll kill you. Stop the tape!! I do NOT have pores!! My pores are CUTE!! My pores are TINY!! YOU'RE FIRED!!!
O'Neill means well -- what he doesn't realize is that in order to genuinely help others, one has to face up to the reality of their situations, instead of trying to cram said realities into a few simplistic, socially-approved pigeon-holes. Basically, he doesn't have the guts to be a truly effective counsellor.
This applies to his relationship with Janet, too. He really does care about Janet -- this is obvious from his actions and some thoughts we've witnessed -- but he doesn't have the guts to tell her what's wrong with her. In his defense, it's quite possible that if he tried, Janet would reject him. But he _should_ try.

You seem to be ignoring her often-mentioned ex-husband. I don't think Ms. Barch is scared of being hurt, I think she's seeking revenge for having been hurt. "You feed them, you wait on them, and then, after 22 thankless years, they just up and leave. No note, no phone call, no nothing! (slams pointer on desk) Just... like... that!" True, we don't know her ex's side of the story, but if Ms. Barch was suppressing her temper for 22 years in an effort to please her husband, well...that's a _lot_ of anger to catch up on.
-Mark Steese a/k/a Corvus Marinus (Quotation from "The Lab Brat," borrowed from the transcript on Outpost Daria.)
"There's always two sides to a story" -- isn't that the truth? We know Ms. Barch's side to the story -- maybe her ex-husband felt she was attempting to dominate him and put up with it until he had enough and left her. We need to know who he is and hear * his * side of the story before we can judge him and her.

I agree it would be nice to hear his side of the story, although not so much that I'd want the Daria staff to tie up that loose end before any number of others. Personally, I think he left because her voice finally got to him. I have no problem with Ms. Barch's attitude, but living with that voice day in and day out for 22 years - yipes!
Hmm.. fair enough. There must be something to that, though I wonder if it will ever get beyond the occasional fling. The example that comes to mind is Angela Anaconda's teacher and her husband, though Ms. Barch is otherwise self-opinionated.
Excuse me while I put this cotton wool in my mouth and add fake injuries to my face. (Anyone want $5?) :)
Is it really ? He quietly breaks up with her, goes after her best friend, etc.
But Tom is a jerk. He's a weasely jerk whose good with words, but still a jerk. What he said about his relationship with Jane, when you cut the weasel words out, comes down to "I dumped her because I got bored with her." That's psychopath talk. It's like he had no sentiment at all.
Oh he isn't any different to any other teenage boy really. His hormones do the attraction, then his brains catch up afterwards. Perhaps that does make him a jerk. The point is that to write him off completely now effectively kills the excitement of seeing how low he will go later on, or indeed whether he will commit himself to Daria and do the right thing. I can easily condemn his actions towards Jane, but I want to see if he is a *career* jerk or just a one time loser...
Somebody admitted it! Somebody admitted it! Though nobody can admit it to my face, having heard my story, somebody admitted it, nonetheless! It is creepy to approach a matter of the heart with the faculties of the head intact! (Am I being sarcastic? Perhaps, but only halfway so.)
Not uncommon for a pair like them. My best friend and I went through the same thing last summer. He'd been on and off with this girl for years, while I held back a crush that was actually even older than his. He was aware of it; I had told him. Though we had a somewhat animated scene in private, in our dealings with her, we were always perfectly reasonable.
Daria and Jane are friends for a reason. It is only reasonable to assume they'd overlap in romantic interest frequently. And it is also only reasonable to assume that the sort they'd overlap on wouldn't be the sort to move out kicking and screaming.
Of corse not. He was talking to *Daria* at the time. He was justifying their actions. If there's one thing that is highest priority on any guy's mind, it's to assuage any guild, of what ever source, that the girl in question might have about a relationship.
This doesn't mean he didn't have his moments of intensity, of doubt. But, unlike Daria, he doesn't have a cameraman following him all the time, nor do we hear his internal monologue.
You're a pseud because instead of just outright calling me a wanker, which is a 3rd grade insult, you have to go on for an entire paragraph, building a setup for a boring, and stereotypical retort.
You're just a shriveled up homeless womans tampon. At least I cut to the fucking point.
Going out with a boring loser/possible rapist is "making it"? What a frumpy, boring life you must live.
You missed "clever" by about 40 yards you brainless whore.
Looks like I hit home. Trolls always resort to this sort of response when someone hits the mark. It usually means they don't have a meaningful response to make.
Anyhow, as I've already promised, I'll stop feeding little Bernie now, so his daddy can get a word in.
The sheer energy of this poster's derision is a rather ammusing form of trollery. I think I might enjoy this one every bit as much as I did the imfamous Q.. ;)
That may be, but we all stopped feeding the troll some weeks ago. The problem I had was that it stopped being entertaining when it had to resort to mindless name-calling. When trolls go down that road, there is no point arguing with them. Methinks most folk here plonked it around that point. :)
I once had hair like that. Actually, people seemed to like it. And I attended a high school that was about as far from white trash as it gets (never mind it was at the edge of a black ghetto... :p
Oh, and I take your reference to the term "white trash" to mean you're a descendent of the planter aristocracy?
