Daria and BTIO

BTIO = "Baby Think-It-Over," a plastic "infant simulator" used in some schools to show teenagers what it's really like to care for a baby. It's essentially a crying doll, but not sold as a doll: it weighs about seven pounds and comes in (I think) six different ethnicities. It has a computer chip that makes it cry -- *loud* -- at completely random times of day and night; to make it stop, the "parent" has to insert a small key (attached to a non-removeable bracelet on hir wrist) into a hole in the doll's back, and hold it in place for a period of time which randomly varies from one to thirty minutes. The computer chip also "remembers" if the doll is abused, underfed, neglected, or held improperly.

If they ever did an episode featuring a BTIO simulator, who would get to spend a week hauling the squalling plastic monster around? Daria or Quinn?

Well, Quinn would probably pay Daria to do it...or she'd get one of her followers to do it in exchange for sitting at the lunch table with her for the week (after the BTIO is gone..)

As for Daria, she'd probably take care of it all week.. and the show would be all about her response to it... now THAT would be cool. After all, Daria's not the payoff type unless it'll get her something valuable in the long run.

As the orginal poster stated, the bracelets with the keys cant not be removed!

I've been thinking about this all day, so I'd better ask before it drives me insane... can't be removed? Ever? You're stuck with the bloody things for life?

Excuse my British ignorance, I just *really* want to know.

Well, can't be removed if you want a decent grade out of the class. The bracelet is like a long label you might print on your computer's printer (its about 1" thick and 7" long). Its just that if you rip it off to get out the key, its visible that you did and you can't undo it. Thats how my school did it to my poor classmates.

Then you've just proved a point; Quinn wouldn't care about a good grade, and probably neither would Daria if it drove her nuts enough.

~Susan Who thinks British Ignorance is cool.

Thanks, now I can get those images of oppressed students with huge shackles on their arms out of my head...

Oh, like she couldn't enlist Upchuck to hack into BTIO's computer and make here look like the perfect cybermom without doing a whit of work.

I think Quinn would have fun, she would dress it up in cute little outfits, and Sandywould get jealous and be like "Well Quinn, your baby is so much more fashionable than mine, maybe you shoul dbe president of the fashion club."

I think it would be more amusing to watch Quinn have to deal with that thing. Daria would either think it is a pain in the neck or would realize that it is a valuable learning experience. Maybe a sarcastic crack or two, but that's it. I think Quinn, on the other hand, would be mortified by the thoght of this, how it would cut into her social life and things like that. I think there would be more amusing moments with Quinn than with Daria.

I just had a vision of the three J's fighting it out over who was to be the doll's "Daddy", like something out of a soap opera

Someone's already working on a fanfic about this. The fanfic had Daria dealing with robo-baby. Look for it...it's called "Sacked Out." I got a glimpse of it as a work-in-progress and it was pretty amusing.
