I tried to give this a chance. Really and truly I did. I am always rooting for Glenn Eichler and everyone else on the "Daria" team, and "Daria" has distinguished itself in the past as a series with absolutely NO clunkers in its entire run.

Well, now we have our first clunker. This makes "The New Kid" and "The Daria Hunter" (both episodes I liked but apparently a lot of Daria fans disliked) seem like Great Moments in Daria history.

The premise was done better by our own Paperpusher in his "Her-Uh-Cane" fanfic. Where was the aftermath, and the funny possibilities thereof? In "Her-Uh-Cane" Paperpusher gave us the unforgettable images of the Gupty lawn in shambles.

And some of those characters just SHOULDN'T have sung. I don't know if Brittany and Ms. Barch are done by the same voice actor or whether they are two different ones, but my ears are still hurting from their efforts.

Let me just end this by saying that I am REALLY looking forward to "Through A Lens, Darkly" and that if the Daria staff are looking for some GOOD ideas for future episodes that they need look no further than CE Forman's fics. S/he wrote 13 great stories during the drought between the last episode of the 2nd season and last night's episode, and any or all of them would be absolutely CLASSIC Daria episodes.

I heartily disagree. The lyrics were sharp and clever (c'mon, rhyming "Lexus" with "solar-plexus"? Genius!). The songs themselves were well-constructed and catchy - I found myself humming, "They Must Be Worried" on the way to work this morning. And who really wants to see twenty re-treads of "Arts and Crass"? You can only be beaten over the head with heavy "message" shows for so long.... then it's time to have some fun.

I will also respectfully disagree. I've seen at least one cluncker so far ('The Daria Hunter') and several mini-clunkers ('Too Cute,' 'This Year's Model,' and 'The New Kid') and even though 'Daria!' is very far from being a classic episode, it pales in comparison too some of the extreme lows of the series.

Over time this may turn out to be true, since 'Daria!' may be hard to watch again and again (I may even change my grade, if it's warrented)

Admittedly "This Year's Model" and "Daria Hunter" were lame, and "Too Cute" was pretty lame too (although the part with Upchuck and the fake boob... funny.)

"The New Kid" I liked, for some reason. The Goya discussion between Daria and Jane "Goya liked to paint death, destruction... you would have made great pen pals.",

Helen and Jake's lack of ethics (they even end up giving the bribe to Quinn, no God-fearing briber would do that. After all, Daria can still list it).

the fact that Quinn called Daria "comrade", maybe since I'd just read "Animal Farm"... bringing out her violently competitive nature. (and HER lack of ethics.).

Plus this was one of the first episodes I saw and the line "Are you sure annoying your parents is grounds for a relationship?" "Worked for Romeo and Juliet" really stuck with me.

"That Was Then, This is Dumb" was cool too, Helen in her yuppy-ish way wanted to impress everyone, and that meant her old hippy friends. So in order to impress them she had to try to NOT to act like a yuppy, but in doing that she was. Does that make any sense at all?

But in the end everyone sees everyone else's ideas. Daria who (rightfully) attacked the aging hippies even admitted "If you are going to hold on to something from the 60's, peace and love beat a 'Get Smart' lunchbox".

Even the Daria/Trent thing worked to their advantage this time, as a means to get Daria into the flea market situation "the flea market is so romantic this time of year... I hear the Chia Pets are in bloom" but isn't overplayed since Trent, once there, immediately falls asleep.

I haven't seen it in a while... I'm afraid they've realized it's not popular and stopped showing it :) ... but they both did admit they had some things to be proud of, which is a big step for a couple of people who only saw the burnt out sixties survivors (or were they suvivors?)

Whereas "Daria! The Musical!" didn't have a single scene that didn't make me groan in agony. There were a couple of choice lines, but choice lines alone do not a great episode make.

"DTM" was a direct break from the reality-based anchoring of the show. I am dubious about the other fantasy-driven episode coming up as well. The humor of the "Daria" series is proportionally related to how much the audience can relate to her predicament. Cut the show free from its reality-based anchoring and you wind up losing a great deal of the show's humor.

I watched "Daria!" Wednesday night, Friday at 3pm, and today (Saturday) at 11am. It's very rewatchable.

The songs are great, the one-liners are memorable, and the little odd touches like Trent's phone and the school spirit jello are swell'n.
