tom and daria

hey everyone, i was just watching "I loathe a parade" this morning and it just seemed like maybe tom was interested in daria then. just the way he was acting and then at the end when she got covered in paint tom said they could stop by her house and let her shower and change before they'd go and get pizza. it just seems a little wierd to me considering how daria and tom didn't really get along till then, and all of a sudden tom's all buddy-buddy with daria. and how when he and jane were walking away at the end he turned around to get another look at her, and he looked upset that she wasn't going to go along. so maybe he started to like her that day and it's also a little wierd that mtv chose to play this episode after we saw the recent tom/jane/daria problem. what does anyone else think? is there a connection?

No offense, but this isn't news. The first time I saw it, I could tell Tom had something for Daria. I think I even posted a list of all the reasons why.

I was glad they showed it again. It was good for all of the people who missed it the first time. :) Hopefully, "Dye..." will live up to our expectations...

Interested in Daria, yes. She's an interesting person to someone with intelligence, and Tom's definitely intelligent. Was he trying to start a romantic relationship? Probably not. I think that, at the beginning of "I Loathe A Parade", Tom was trying hard just to get Daria to tolerate him. Daria, remember, had been jealous of Tom for his demands on Jane's time. (And, by the way, I thought Daria would have gone a little further with her "Excuse Me?" in "Fire!" when Jane cites her for monopolizing Tom's time). Anyway, by the end of ILAP, it's clear that Daria and Tom have a lot in common, and that, while I don't think either one would deliberately attempt to further a romantic involvement, they both know that they could be good friends. Or more.

You know, Tom and Daria make a lot more sense than Tom and Jane. And Tom seemed more genuinely interested in Daria, anyway. Does anyone else think Tom's really hot? God, if I knew a guy like that...

Ok, pleased as I am that this episode went down (it was a damn good one), one thing still bothers me. Tom never _actually_ broke up with Jane until *after* he kissed Daria. And _HE_ kissed Daria. Well, there was a lot of hinting that Jane and Tom were going to break up anyway. Jane has hinted since the "Mart of Darkness" episode that she and Tom were on the rocks.

Heh ... I think you're the first other person to notice this. Though Tom's behavior wasn't precisely "bad" (he was obviously planning on breaking up with Jane at that point; there's no way he was dumb enough to think that he could possibly be with both girls) it was certainly "less than admirable." He really should have broken up with Jane first, at a minimum.

I'm also not really sure that he tried all that hard to stay together with Jane in the first place. While I really don't think that he dated Jane "to get to Daria", as Jane thought for a moment, it does seem that after he emotionally connected with Daria at the parade, he simply stopped trying. Jane didn't outright refute his claim that "they" were getting "bored wth each other," but her expression looked to me to be very hurt when he said that, as if she were silently disagreeing but was too proud to admit that _she_ had still been in love with Tom.

I feel _really_ sympathetic to Jane in this situation. She didn't do a good job of keeping Tom, but that was partially because she was too naive to realize that she had to try. And we have no evidence that Tom even warned her that there was a real problem.

While I don't think Tom's a bad guy, he may not be as totally wonderful as he seems.

Think about it. Ever since Daria and Tom started getting along better -- and what friend *wouldn't* want his/her best friend to at least get along with his/her significant other? -- Jane has acted insecure and jealous, with more than a little paranoia thrown into the mixture. She flat-out accused Daria of trying to "steal" Tom away from her, when Daria did absolutely NOTHING to warrant such an accusation; in fact, Daria was doing everything she could to *NOT* bring on such a situation. Even when she tried to apologize for her actions, she *still* could not let it go, even to the point of dragging Tom into it by calling him up and screaming all sorts of accusations at him (and I suspect it was not the first time, judging by Tom's comments to Daria in the car). Little wonder that Tom acted the way he did, even though it probably wasn't the most honorable thing to do... and I'm in NO WAY surprised that Daria reacted in kind, given how Jane had been treating her.

One last food for thought: Jane would *never* have taken from Daria what she did to Daria.

Oh yes. Well, for one thing, I think that Jane is aware that Daria is a lot more charismatic than she is. An Evil Daria could have easily taken Tom away from Jane right at the beginning.

Which is why Daria had such mixed emotions by the end of this episode.

Jane has probably been alienating Tom, unintentionally, for a while now.

Oh, I think Daria's _very_ attracted to Tom. The second kiss proved it.

I still like Tom. I just said he wasn't "as totally wonderful as he seems." At first glance, he seemed flawless.

We actually saw a great part of Helen too. All hell was breaking loose for her at work, and she put all that aside to talk w/ her daughter. Helen usually just talks to Daria between phone calls with Eric!

Is it just me, or does Helen sometimes sound like Jane Jetson? I wonder if they're one in the same?
