Any one who has the same problem wane share it with me?
Oh ye, I'll be 28

"A TERA on the road is like a tank in your living room." "Damm noisy!!"
I`ve never had a valentine card either :-(...i am also a loss in love :-( I pretend not to mind....but i wish sombody liked me.. Oh well, thats life........apparently :-(
I was complaining to Scott how much I hate Valentine's day (no, don't jump to conclusions, I wasn't trying to drop any hints!) and he told me to "cheer up". I could'a killed him! It's alright for him, isn't it? There's at least one person who fancies him!
He doesn`t really know that yet though..does he? Day by day though, he must be getting some kind of picture forming in his mind. I mean girls don`t come up to me and start complaining they don`t get any valentines cards :-) Not hinting, my foot! :-))))) ha ha
or..... did you only complain about the concept of valentines day but made no reference to how many cards you got /not got?
I'm not really very keen on valentines day at all.... but i would be very happy indeed if I actualy got a valentines card! I'd probably get the bloody thing framed :-) luckily i`m never forced to face up to my blatant hypocrisy :-)
I know its only pity, Kyle, but ...thankyou all the same You see a broken loveless wretch, and you reach out your hand to help....I feel much happier now, and look forward to your valentines :-)
"Don't flush your whole life just because some guy didn't ask you out. It probably didn't even have anything to do with you."--Daria (Apologies if I don't have the quote quite right. It's extemporaneous.)
Case in point: When I was in Middle School, I think about 7th grade, in one class a girl who I had had a sort of relationship with in 2nd grade came up to me and handed me a valentine. Inside she'd written, "I will love you forever and ever." At that time, at that age, I sort of felt like the Cowardly Lion from the movie "The Wizard of Oz"--I felt like running down the corridor and diving through the first window I came to. I didn't do that though. I concealed my shock and accepted it as graciously as is(was) possible for me. Inside though I was terrified. I wondered what might be expected of me based on a friendship when I was 7. I just wasn't ready to be dating at that time (Soon now though, I hope ;-)). Nothing more ever came of it. I hope her feelings weren't hurt by my unresponsiveness. I've sometimes wondered whatever happened to her. I hope she found happiness.
Anyway the point is, romance doesn't happen just because you want it to. EVERYTHING has to be just right--the right people in the right place at the right time. If he/she simply isn't ready for a relationship, or if there's a mismatch between the two people, it just isn't going to happen. It probably isn't about you at all. You can't take it personally. But you can still be friends. That phrase needn't be a brush-off. You can't have too many friends-- if for no other reason than to to make introductions. As I understand it, Valentine's day can be a time of friendship as well as a time of romance. If you're not getting any romantic Valentine's cards maybe you should consider sending some non-threatening, non-committal, friendship cards. Someone has to make the first move and most guys are too obtuse to do it.
You can complain about valentine's day and not hint at anything. I sat with two guys in class during valentines day once, complaining about how much the holiday sucks when you're single. And I had no interest in either of them, or vice versa. It was kind of funny.
Yep i agree, but if you aproach somebody you know you fancy and mention "in passing" that you never get any valentines cards, the chances are you are issuing a "hint" of sorts. Of course if you don`t fancy the person then it is just another ordinairy "unhinting" type, conversation :-)
No, I was complaining about not getting any cards, 'cos I'm sooo subtle. :) He bought me chips today! And then he made me eat all of them ("What, are you trying to lose weight or something? Is that possible?)..... This was after I'd finished work (yup, it's work experience week) an hour early and had spent the free hour I'd gained following him around Superdrug, probably being very annoying....
No doubt, pausing at the valentines card section..and saying little subtle things like.."Thats a nice one isnt it Scott?...Boy oh boy, i`d be so glad if *SOMEBODY* sent me a card like that!.....oh well, i guess it will never happen, poor me" :-)
Btw Aren`t most valentine cards horrible?...I couldn`t imagine sending one of those things to somebody i actualy liked :-) I think it shows more respect to just fling them a note in a paper aeroplane :-)
I'd never do anything that obvious! Like, so following someone around for an hour while they're working is totally not obvious, yeah..... :)
Oh, absolutely. And if any guy sent me roses or a teddy or anything, I would totally never speak to him again - I'm not that desperate! No offence to anyone here who's ever sent either of those things to someone. :)
Most event-specific greeting cards are horrible; that's why I prefer to find Far Side cards, or any other cards which are blank on the inside, to which I can usually match the cartoon on the front to what I know of the people I'm sending it to. Mainly birthdays, but I've also given them in lieu of Bon Voyage, Congrats on your Engagement, Christmas cards, etc.
The other year my cousin in the US got married, so I went looking for a card to send her. All the Wedding specific cards were covered in white lace, roses, and terminally cute bunnies and teddies. The one card I saw that really appealed to me had the two plasticene British Gas Orangutans on (from those "Creature Comforts" style ads). I can just imagine it, a table covered in white and pastel cards, with this bright blue and orange one in the middle. She was really pleased with it, as I recall...
A nudge to on-topic status: Are there any "Daria" greeting cards out? I know I'd get them, if they were blank inside...
You could make one. I always make my own cards now, I gave up trying to find anything I liked in the shops. For a while I would use designs incorporating pictures I got off the net, but since I upgraded my equipment I've been able to use my own photos too. I would probably have a go at making a Daria card but I don't know anyone IRL who's even heard of the show. I've tried telling people about it but I just get blank looks. It's hard to convey to people how I feel about the show, I mentioned it to someone yesterday and he hadn't even heard of Beavis & Butthead let alone Daria, but intriguingly he turned out to be a big King of the Hill fan, which is a show I've been able to get into at all, I always turn it off after about 10 seconds, I hate the characters' voices.
Garry Larson is fantastic, its such a pity he stoped :-(
I sent one "valentines" once...in the end i just got a blank card with a nice design...err and didn`t send it on valentines day ?? Inside were the heart-moving words...."Hope all is well with you" yep i`m a real romatic, me :-)
Boy oh boy it was tough finding that girls address, i`m still not sure it reached her..i must ask her, if i ever see her again that is.
How about a "general sympathy" card with a pic of Daria with her arms folded, and inside..... "Hope it gets better for you, real soon" :-)
Last Christmas I bought a box of Grateful Dead christmas cards for all my friends, which was cool... the year before that I made up cards on my computer that were a parody sort of of Monty Python's "Life of Brian" which I gave to everyone who had seen the movie, as I remember they all liked them and there was a great deal of quoting going on during Science Olympiad

Basically Science Olympiad is an association of middle school and hign school students who belong to a team and compete in various science-related events. Some of these are labs, some are tests, some are building.
In Grandville Science Olympiad connotes a bunch of loony anarchic outcasts rallied under the slogan "keep it surreal". At least it used to.
But that's another story

The mind boggles at the idea of letting students compete for the most "impressive" science experiment..... wow
Results... A blue flash was seen followed closely by a concusion wave. A large portion of the library roof was avaporated ameadiatly The skool burned with a deep red flame denoting the presence of sodium :-)
That sounds like fun. Have all the anrachists left, or is the slogan changing or both?
You have "confusion confusion" or "meta confusion" ie confusion about confusion Confusion isn`t a very easy thing to get clear in your mind :-)
They all left. Actually we never really HAD a slogan as that would require agreeing and that would require organizing, but "keep it surreal" was Chris's senior quote and I thought it was appropriate. But all the loonies have left and the teacher's becoming a fascist.
Oh well. Nothing lasts forever.

I can sympathise with you on this. I never get any cards either. I try to pretend it doesn't matter but I don't do very well!
Yep. And I have to go to my friend's birthday party on that day too. And that's not even her birthday! As if it wasn't enough that I hate parties, she has to have hers on Valentine's day, and to top it all off she has to have it at the house of this guy I fancy! Could it get any worse?
Happy birthday for the 14th. Just try to forget what day it is! :)
It's not a setup. This friend of mine at least knows that I fancied the guy at one time, but I don't think she's realised I still fancy him. I just hope he doesn't mention to her that I spent an entire hour following him around at work after I'd finished work today. I mean, it would make it kinda obvious that I'm totally obsessed with the guy. :)
I don't know, I'm beginning to doubt his intelligence.....I kept saying "If I'm annoying you, tell me and I'll go home," and he'd say "No, I'm more worried about me annoying you, you can go if you want" and I was like, "No, that's OK, I'll stay here if you don't mind!"

Tarvok, you took my line away !! :) But serius. I think its time for sameone to mak first stap here. so alli, Go for it girl !!!! 90% chanse here and that is as Hi as it gets..
He knows I like hanging around him, at least. We spent an hour sitting out in the cold together waiting for his "mom" to arrive, and I told him so much stuff I would never tell anyone else. I didn't tell him I fancied him, but I've got his phone number. :)
Ah yes. The "feeding" ritual. In ancient times a guy was expected to demonstrate his ability to take care of a mate by feeding her. Today that old tradition continues by being expected to take her to "Chez Pierre." He must be at least a little interested or he wouldn't have spent money on you.
Why can't you accept that you've won? You're a likeable person, you deserve some happiness. (Not like your evil twin who comes in here spoofing your address from time to time.) Just enjoy it while it lasts.
Yeah, OK, maybe he's a *little* interested, but I don't want to ask him out or anything. There's a pretty good chance he'd say yes, but I'm not going to ask because I don't think I could cope with going out with him when it's just me that fancies him, you know? Probably not. Nevermind. I really don't know what to do about it. I'll probably say something at some point, maybe tomorrow.
Enjoy what? If you mean just being friends with the guy, then yeah, that's exactly what I intend to do, but I can't help wanting more. :)
On the mountaintop, "endless, nameless" spake thusly:
There's nothing wrong with being friends with a guy if you think the relationship wouldn't work out. Perhaps you should give it a try, though, if you're feeling brave :-) If he says no, you *can* still be friends with him, and maybe if you get to know him better as a guy, you won't fancy him so much. <shrug> Then again, taking romantic advice from me is probably not such a good idea.
There. I made fun of her .sig. You guys happy now? =P

(slips into crotchety old 21 year old man (yeah, like that's old or anything)), if you guys have a strong friendship, it likely CAN survive an attempt at something more... IF you have a strong friendship. My best friend (female) and myself spent about two or three months considering ourselves in a "relationship" relationship, and those were, perhaps, the best two months I spent during high school. But, toward the end of that thing, we started running out of things to talk about, and I realized that this thing wasn't working at the moment. We talked it over, and decided to let it go. There was a month or two of slight wierdness, but after that, we were back to the way we were before: good, close friends, but nothing more.
That's not what I think, I think it could work pretty well, but unfortunately he doesn't appear to think that. I may say something, but I doubt it now.
I know him really well anyway, and the more I get to know him, the more I like him.
Well, I might as well just go jump off a bloody bridge now, anyway. Today, four people have asked if we're going out, one of my friends has severely embarrassed me in front of him, most of the rest of my friends know I fancy him and think it's hilarious (I said something stupid to them that totally gave it away), all of Scott's friends think he's going out with me, and even my dad is making comments. Yep, as he said, "we're the lastest rumour around here".

If things are to this point, I suggest you snag him before things get wierd. When there is a rumor involving two people, both know it, but one of them is avoiding the rumor, there is a good possibility that the other will assume the worst. In addition, in my experience, a rumor of this sort can only appear if BOTH are seen as "fancying" each other (and it's obvious to an outside observer), or (an unlikely possiblity) someone is deliberately fabricating the rumor. I think the former is more likely, given what you've said so far.
a month ago she moved here, we enjoyed each others company, and as of right now we're going out. I really coudn't tell you how we got from one stage to the next. Or when it happened.
To avoid going any furthur off-topic, I will voice my sincere hope to see Daria in some sort of relationship that isn't Trent this season.

How that changed is one of the Great Mysteries. To not just accept
it is to court madness.
Been out of the dating pool for quite some time now (married to the
same lovely lady for 21 years now, she still takes my breath away). But
I still have a brainscar from my early amateur period, and every other
guy I've talked to has had the same thing happen to him. If I didn't
have a girlfriend, I couldn't get one to save my life. Just when I
resigned myself to living the life of a monk, I'd get one. When I had
a gf, girls would be coming out of the woodwork with come hither looks
to outright offers of sacktime. Being monogamous of nature, these
occurrences almost drove me batty. Break up with gf, and the cycle would
repeat.
Just wondering if this sort of activity still goes on in this
day and age. Any of you guys still swimming in the pool experience
this behavior?
Jon Armstrong The Space Ranger Graveyard gives one a unique outlook on life. A dark one.
Ever see that film, The Drowning Pool? Much more apt name than swimming pool I think.
Hey, I just noticed that one of Alli's stars is different. It just turns upside down occasionally, whereas the others keep turning into showers of dust like stationary comets. http://village.vossnet.co.uk/y/yannaco/ (That's weird, Netscape shows it as having a different URL to what I entered to get there!)
Maidenhead -- now there's an ironical place name. Fancy living in a town whose name is a synonym for hymen! Weird.
Yes I went there too, in fact I think I've visited every bit of the site, unless you have any extremely cunningly hidden links (speaking of which did anyone ever spot the link to the eccles website on my Daria page?)
BTW I tried viewing the Daria movies on the Daria Warehouse site yesterday and it seems they don't work anymore. Does anyone know of a URL with working versions? The page says something about there being mirror sites around.
Mmm, I feel like some chips now, must rush out and buy some.
Yes... as one comedian put it, as soon as you get a little estrogen on ya, it seems to attract every woman in the room, while the smell of desperation will drive every woman away in the room. Having had my share of relationships, it's been my experience that most of mine have sort of "snuck up" on me as well. (Well, at least the ones that lasted for an appreciable time did.)
I think "Andrea" and Alli would be well advised to negotiate, and jointly reserve book, TV, and film rights for this thread, before they find it's a major new movie.
Who would be cast as Alli? Who as her American beau? And what about the sort-of-girlfriend from France?
Who would play The Girl Known Here Only as Andrea? (Hey, plot twist: perhaps TGKHOaAndrea will turn out to *be* the s-o-g from France?)
Excuse me. My first meeting today lasted from 1030 to 1600ish (nice fish'n'chip lunch, though), and the second finished at 2115. I'll mellow out soon.

Why not? I'm living proof....sorta. At lunchtime today my friends said I looked "dead". I had to have some milkshake because I was about to pass out if I didn't eat, I was shaking horribly. I wasn't going to have anything else, but Karen and Scott threatened to force-feed me, so rather than be humiliated to such a degree I decided I'd have some of their chips. :)

<:( I can't say I've been in your place, but I've been in their place (those trying to see you eat). Believe me, it is NOT fun to watch a friend starve herself (as no "he" would ever do so) as the result of depression or anxiety or whatever; and it is especially bad her male friends. The reason for this is, when males hear of a problem that is bothering someone they count important, their first instinct is to look for a way to solve the problem. You complain about a noise or smell from your car's engine, the nearest guy will pop the hood and look for a problem, even if he doesn't know anything about cars. You complain about a relationship problem (or lack therof), and not eat, and things like that, and the surrounding male friends will stand there, wring their hands, every fiber in their body screaming "FIND A WAY TO SOLVE HER PROBLEM," the brain will return, "No Known Solution," and one of two things will occur. Either his defense mechanisms will activate, and he'll proceed to do his best to ignore the problem, perhaps to the point of being callous. The other possibility, particularly if he's a close friend, is he'll be driven nearly insane by the situation.
Why would no male ever stop eating? Eating disorders among men may (appear to) be less common than among women, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
It would appear from my position to be just you. :)
I was going to flame and have a major hssy fit, but then I decided it wasn't worth it. Nothing's worth anything. That sounds pretty good, actually. Nothing's worth anything. I'll have to remember that one. :)
Well, the Happydude universal measurment system is a system of value rather than amount..so this could well have implications If anything is worth nothing then 1 happydude is worth nothing, and the "happydude principle" itself is also worth nothing mmm a system of values that has no value...errr
Patience? That's one thing I have to have right now. Maybe I shouldn't have wasted it on you. :)
Everything is worth nothing to me right now. These past few weeks it's been like someone's pulled out a plug somewhere inside me and everything's slowly draining away. I can't find any happiness or pleasure in anything. I'm finding it hard even to be upset about anything, because nothing is anything, and everything is nothing. It's like, I'm not dead, but I'm not living either. Feels like I'm just sitting in the middle, waiting.
Hey, you got a website Alli! I just took a look and it's cool. I like the little star things. And there's a link to my site! :-D I just added some reverse-aged Jodie Foster pics to my site today, she was guest starring in an old episode of Ironside, a series that used to be on TV when I was little.
Well, call me simple, but it made me chuckle when I hovered over a little star and the popup text from the ALT tag said, "What are you looking at?" or something similar. <g> It looked like decoration, not a link, but it was a link.... I won't spoil any of the others....
That's ok, I think using alt tags and surprise links is a good idea! ;-) I guess it's just every now and then I get the feeling that no-one's looked at my website, although admittedly the counter does show an average of 500 hits a month and they can't all be mine! Anyway, I was flattered to see I'm at the top of your links page.
I forget what band it was for now, but there was some fan site I went to that had links to all the different parts of the site in this sort of table, and as you moved the little pointer-thing over the links, it'd have lyrics from one of the band's songs. Like, the one at the top'd be the first line of a song, and you'd move down to the next one and it'd be the next line.....I thought that was pretty cool.
How do you put a counter on your site? On second thoughts, don't tell me, it's probably a really bad idea for me to do that; I'd just get stressed about how many people were visiting my site and stuff.....
I've done something like that on my My So-Called Life page, where some of the dialogue of the final scene of the series pops up line by line as you zig-zag your mouse down over the picture of Brian and Angela. I was going to add the preceding lines of dialogue above the picture, synchronised with the lines of Brian's letter, but I haven't got round to it yet.
One thing to be aware of though is that not all browsers do pop-ups of ALT text, so you can't rely on everyone being able to see it. It looks nicest on IE4, and NS4 also shows it, but some browsers such as Opera, and older versions of IE, don't show it at all. I tried adding a bit of javascript to make the same text appear on the browser status line too, but that doesn't work on Opera either, also a lot of people turn off javascript for security reasons, since it can be used to give websites access to the files on your hard disk.
You need to ask your service provider, as typically it works by your page having a link to a program they provide which keeps a running total and generates a little image of a counter on your webpage. Demon provide a piece of HTML that you just copy and paste into your homepage, and that's all there is to it unless you want to fiddle about with the colours or style of the counter display.
I think there are some generic counter programs available too but many service providers don't let you run your own programs on their webservers since running unchecked code is a potential risk to the stability and security of their computers. With Demon you can only run the programs they provide for you in their cgi-bin directory, and I would expect most ISPs follow a similar policy.
Ah, you're in stage 6 then. We had this cycle worked out in college. It starts like this: Stage 1. Good Things happen, you're happy. Stage 2. Bad things happen, you're unhappy. Stage 3. Good things happen, you're unhappy. Stage 4. Bad things happen, you're happy. Stage 5. Bad things happen, you don't care. Stage 6. Good things happen, you don't care.
You don't stay in any one stage for too long, and after Stage 6, you go back to Stage 1 again. Of course, the same roommates who figured this out were also conviced that they were being tormented by an evil spirit trapped in a decorated coconut-shaped wall hanging that looked like a person, sort of-- they simply referred to it as "Mr. Evil," so take it with a few grains of salt. (About 5 kilos worth.) <g>

There's a story of one the great spiritual directors, doubtless Saint Someone-or-other. Somebody went to him for advice, and described the state of their soul, and waited for some esoteric words of wisdom from another plane of being. He actually began his response by saying something like, "And what do you eat?" (The story is used to illustrate a holistic approach to spiritual growth, and counter the myth of Spirit Vs Body).
Ermm, Alli, eat. Ah, go on. G'wan g'wan g'wan g'wan g'wan g'wan g'wan g'wan. (Apologies to people who've never seen "Father Ted.")
The not eating thing came after the hollow, empty thing.
OK, OK, I already did! I just ate a muffin! And I had half a milkshake and some chips at lunchtime, although the milkshake was because I was about to pass out, and the chips were Scott's fault ("Aww.....you have to eat. Go on, have some of my chips. Please....").
I think Daria should play Alli, and Trent should play the American beau. Quinn could play Andrea, since she apparently wants to be a goth now or something.
