I was watching "Beavis and Butthead Do America" and I noticed in the scene with Mr. VanDriesen singing "Lesbian Seagull" at Highland High that our own Miss Morgendorfer (or should that be Ms?) was part of a group of students sitting around him. I know that the character of Daria wasn't really explored in B&B, but REALLY! Daria wouldn't do anything that would involve extracurricular participation...unless a fee were involved, and she certainly wouldn't do anything THAT goofy.
Also, wouldn't Michael Flatley(Lord of the Dance) be a good alter ego for Trent? Ok, this came to me at 2am...sorry to waste your time and bandwidth.
I couldn't have said it better myself. I, for one, can't see Daria changing a car tire on "Daria."
And speaking of Daria on B&B, was I the only one disappointed with the way Daria was handled on the finale of Beavis and Butthead? I was hoping for an actual reason Daria would be in Highland, maybe even an appearance of Jane. (Jane drawn in B&B style, there's a thought.) At the very least, I was hoping she would be wearing her Lawndale clothes, rather than the black... Highland clothes.
I could. She's the same character in Highland and in Lawndale.
Different continuum. In the B&B continuum Daria hasn't yet met Jane, and she's (I'm guessing here) still a junior. In the "Daria" continuum, Daria has managed to put the horrors of Highland, TX behind her.

Possible explinations:
1. Highland was so intellectually pathetic that there was nobody other than Daria who *could* do something like produce a newspaper. Daria can be guilted into taking action if you convince her that there's nobody else for the job, and she might have felt this was her only defense against the absolute intellectual vacuum of Highland. When she got to Lawndale, she found people like Jody, Mack and even Upchuck who actually cared about "school spirit," and decided they could have it.
2. Freshman Daria (of B&B) was just plain more idealistic than sophomore Daria (of Daria). At Highland, Daria was trying to find any kind of intellectual challenge whatsoever. By the time she'd got to Lawndale, she'd decided that there was simply none to be had in high school.

No, that would have been wrong. It's implicit in the B&B series that the whole thing (from Frog Baseball, through B&B Do America, right up to B&B are Dead) took place during one school year - Daria's (and B&Bs) freshman year. Her appearance on B&B are Dead happened before her family moved to Lawndale, even though it aired later.
I only watched the movie once and don't particularly remember, but couldn't he have been singing during a class? That would mean it wasn't extracurricular activity, and Daria wouldn't be able to avoid it.

Not unless it was during a class, and she was forced into it. She (and Jane) did, after all, get forced into cheerleading practice in "See Jane Run", and as you may recall, their rather strong opposition to it was what got them into the whole Jane-on-the-track-team mess in the first place. :-)
