Boxing Daria - that hug and other thoughts

First off, kudos to Eichler and company for a very well done episode. They built the suspense beautifully with the car accident sound. Then the flashbacks with the refrigerator box...and the events that helped shape Daria into the girl we met.

The subplot of asking Daria and Jane give tours for the freshmen confused me about the timeline of season 5. I thought we were well into the school year, not at the beginning, when freshmen would need introductory tours.

As a born-again hugger (someone who learned the value of a hug when I was in my 20s, as opposed to early on), the scene where Daria embraced Jane really hit home. I think that hug would have gone to any of the people Daria is closest to (Jane, Tom, Helen, Jake, Quinn)...because she realizes she could have lost them. Jane's reaction made it work, too, because she knows Daria isn't the touchy-feely type.

And Daria's smile when she and Jane were sitting at the restaurant. It was a warm smile, as opposed to a smirk.

I agree with other threads that Tom's patience with Daria has been amazing. Other guys would have called it quits by now. Maybe she'll cross that line in IICY.

Quinn's growth continues to be a pleasant surprise. She's gone from denying Daria to going public about their relationship to accepting her as she is. And even committing an act of kindness without trying to get dinner at Chez Pierre out of it!

I can't wait to see how this novel ends. Not that I want it to, you understand.

The hug certainly took me by surprise. The whole episode did, once it got into the flashbacks to Daria's childhood. It certainly turned out to be a hell of a lot more than "Daria is fascinated by a carton."

That is such a good point. The series really has been shaped like a novel, with slowly evolving themes (Daria's increased willingness to connect with people, Quinn's progress towards maturity and compassion, Jake and Helen's ever-improving parenting skills, etc.). I've been wondering why I'm so content to see the end of a series I've so enjoyed. It's because, I think, the people behind "Daria" took the time to tell precisely the story they wanted to tell, and I trust them to give me the kind of satisfaction, closure, and promise that I get from a good novel.

This is off-topic, but I can't resist:

I suppose the above message footer refers to men who don't make passes to miserable, introverted, overweight glass-wearing creeps. On the other hand, there are good looking women who'd look good under any circumstances, and they don't lack getting mens attention hence you won't hear them complain. In any event, a good looking airhead is always a much, much better choice that the first-mentioned category. DUH.

I know exactly what you mean. In fact, my girlfriend wears glasses and they never bothered me for one second, nor did they deter other men from making "passes" at her in the past. It's just because of the personality you were mentioning that I steer away from any glasses-wearing women who complain about men not making "passes" at them... tells you a lot about the miserable inside. They should look at Daria for a good example. She does not care about other men not making "passes" at her because of the glasses.

Having said that, I wear glasses myself, and I am aware of how well they can act as a barrier socially, but seeing as how my last affair involved someone who also wore glasses, and how good that was (and subsequently how badly we broke up) my experience tells me that Ms. Rudner needs an urgent personality adjustment. Or maybe just a lobotomy. Or perhaps a new writing teacher...
