I don't know if these have been posted before but anyway, I got these off the Amazon.com page for the Daria video at the weekend. I think the dyke reviewer has a pretty skewed view of the Daria/Trent thing, but I guess people tend to see what they want to see. Reminds me of the person who claimed that all the characters in Caroline In The City are in fact gay.

For anyone who has ever been called a nerd, geek or
brain, this is our show. I actually have a sister like Quinn, and I can
really relate to Daria. I especially love her deadpan comments and her
constant mocking of her parents and other authority figures. This video
rocks! Does anyone know if there will be any others released?

Any Daria fanatic needs this video! It's got the
first three episodes plus a black and white pilot that's never been seen
by fans. Whenever there's nothing good on TV, curl up with this Daria
video.
Caution: This video is extremely funny and contains
mind expanding dialogue. Consider yourself warned.

Besides showing a few of the classic first
episodes, this video also shows the black-and-white pilot episode,
"Sealed With A Kick" that has never (and probably never will be) been
aired on TV. It's a really great episode that everyone should see
because it contains a lot of the elements of the Daria we all watch at
10:30 every Monday and yet it's a lot different too. Check it out.

friend) and I are often compared to Daria and Jane, myself for my
cynicism and distaste for human society.
Through Daria, I've found someone with whom I can
really associate! Though this tape doesn't contain my favorite episodes,
it's a must buy for all Daria fans.

Am I the only one who sees that Daria is a lesbian?
You don't have to be gay (which I am) to see the
obvious about one Daria Morgendorffer: This animated teen genius is the
most thinly veiled lesbian to hit TV screens this side of Ellen
DeGeneres! Yet everyone else (including Daria's best bud, Jane Lane) is
either ignorant of it, or thinks Daria's complete lack of interest in
boys really is due to her not yet meeting the right guy. The running
joke about the show---AND the book---is simple: Jane wants to fix her up
with her brother Trent, while everyone else wants to fix her up with the
super-rich Upchuck. Every time I tune in to the "Daria" show, I half-
expect one of two things: Quinn asking Jake and Helen, "Don't you think
it's high time Daria got interested in boys?" ...or the three of them
ganging up on Daria and making her date Upchuck with the warning "IT'S
TIME YOU HAD A MAN!!!" What do I see from "The Daria Diaries" and the TV
show?... Daria is, in fact, in love with Jane Lane, and Jane doesn't
realize it. Daria won't come out and admit it, but her feelings for Jane
are so strong she's about to burst. Even "Beavis and Butthead" knew
Daria had no interest in boys---why won't the "Daria" writers let her
come out of the closet already? We all know the truth...let her be
herself.
Hey, it worked for Ellen, didn't it?

I agree with you, Shez. What show is this lady watching! I've seen every episode at least three times and I can't think of many things that can back up these claims. Maybe I'm a bit naive about these sorts of things, but if this was the intention, I think I would have caught on by now.

No. If I remeber correctly Ellen was cancelled almost immediatly after she came out. If Daria is a lesbian I hope she stays in the closet for a few seasons.

Personally I would have no problem with a Daria who was a lesbian, but the simple fact is that she isn't one, at least not in this universe. But I guess there's no harm in people indulging in wishful thinking. Maybe there's also stupid people out there who like to imagine that Daria actually has a low IQ and is just bluffing it at school. Or given her low voice, maybe "she's" actually a transvestite? this would go some way to explaining Quinn keeping her distance from her, though I don't really think her parents would let a son of theirs go around dressed as a girl without taking some kind of action over it. Hey, maybe Jake & Helen are TV's too, and Quinn's the only normal one! Jake would make one ugly woman though.

You know, the idea that Daria might actually be a boy in drag is really quite interesting. Given the way she dresses it could easily be true, as her usual attire is pretty unrevealing as to what shape she is. It also fits in with her deadpan character in a way, although TV's re usually quite flamboyant figures, so Daria would be weird even for a transvestite - I can imagine them ostracising her too!

I think it would probably ruin the show if she was a lesbian, because then it would be a show about a lesbian instead of a show about a disillusioned teenage girl. It *shouldn't* make any difference, but if she was a lesbian it would put a whole new perspective on the show in most people's eyes. I would have no problem with her being a lesbian, but I would probably have a problem with the direction taken by the show, they'd focus too much on her lesbianism and ignore the other things about her for the most part.

You'd call Quinn "normal?" Actually, I guess Quinn *is* normal, and that's a very depressing thought....

Just to add my thoughts: I think you're right about the show's direction if she turned out to be a lesbian, but I don't think it's likely to happen. The way I look at it, Daria doesn't have much of a sexuality to begin with (the Trent thing notwithstanding). The way I figure it, what little sexual desire she had got crushed back in Highland by her association with Beavis and Butt-Head ("You. You two right there. Stop peeing in the gene pool."); anything that survived is probably buried deep inside her under the weight of her determination not to be emotionally demonstrative. (i.e., manifesting an attraction for someone will just lead to pain and heartbreak -- after all, haven't we seen her reading the Scarlet Letter in one episode or another?)

I think you're right, the gay/lesbian thing tends to become the whole thing about a character rather than an incidental aspect. Hell, people even make it the key thing about characters who *aren't* homosexual! That's what pissed me off when someone claimed that the Caroline in the City characters were basically gay, they seemed to be more interested in slapping a label on them than enjoying them as individual people. It seems men can't have a feminine side anymore, or vice versa, without someone trying to claim that they're homosexual.

I think that's the missing element from my Daria interview. The actor who plays Daria is really called David Blenkinsop, and he's a bloke...

My cousin was born on the 25th as well, and, yes, she always got the short end of the Present Stick (if there is such a thing) as well.

Being born on the 5th of July, I can tell you that it sucks to have a summer birthday.

When I was in elementary school, if it was your birthday, you DID get a party with cupcakes and such, and everyone liked you because of it-- mostly because everyone would get out of some classwork. (Perhaps it was a foreshadowing of those 4PM office birthday parties?) But those of us with summer birthdays always got screwed. No parties, no cupcakes, no pony rides. (Bastards! And everyone wonders why I'm a cynic? I blame the System.)

The worst part for me is that everyone's always either out of town or on vacation when my birthday rolls around. (July 4th weekend. (I know, DUH-- but I'm just being polite to the members of the Global Community who don't live in the US.)) The Upshot is that I always wind up celebrating my birthday a week or two after it happens. I couldn't even go drinking with my college friends when I turned 21, as everyone was gone for the summer!!!

Of course, the upside is that as a little kid, you got a summer "toy fix" to tide you over until Christmas. ("You know, Chrrrist-masss" -- Ricky's Mom, "Better off Dead.") But it still kinda sucked, anyway, because most of my little friends were off at camp over the summer, so I didn't have anyone to help me break my new toys.

To visit, yes, no problem. Even a picnic on the lawns, perhaps a game of croquet. Many of the places in the care of the National Trust have good restaurants, too, but few are open in January.

As a party venue, or to stay in, yes, at a cost. If you get enough people it can come down to merely "very expensive." People who own nice old castles and let out accommodation kindly permit you to share their experience of the mind-boggling costs of keeping them nice. 8-/

But a nice old castle, as a party venue, in a British January? I'd sooner go for a nice middle-aged castle, or even a nice new one: certainly something under 500 years old.

You don't have to be mad to be abducted by aliens though. Current studies suggest such things happen mainly to people who never quite grew out of having imaginary friends. In other respects they're often boringly normal, which helps lend an air of credibility to the weird tales they come up with. It's just that with some people the dividing line between reality and imagination is rather blurred. Someone did some psychological profiling of abductees once and in most respects they can't be distinguished from the population in general. Of course, nuts & bolts UFO devotees would say that this is because they _are_ normal people who just happened to be abducted by real life aliens. Personally I think the credibility of this stance was summed up best by Shirley Holmes' grandmother:

TV report: ".... Police are continuing their investigations into the alleged alien abduction." Grandma: "Idiots." Shirley: "The Police?" Grandma: "The aliens! Why bother with all these silly abductions when thousands of people would give their right arms to go? They could sell tickets."

Yes, it's specifically dog chocolate; the dog is a German Shepherd.

Um, given that it is a pet treat, I'm not sure how welcome that would be. <g>

I'll look for a tactful way of finding out if she knows how bad chocolates are for dogs. "Oh, no, you don't want to do that..."

I'll have to remember that next time I get hassled by a dog. As for cats it's a good job they don't like chocolate, it's already bad enough with them thinking they own all the fish and dairy products in the house and hassling you to hand it all over to them. Chocolate is one of the few edible things it's safe to leave lying around in a house which has cats.

Do the Morgendorffers have a pet? I recall that in My So-Called Life the Chases had a cat but you never actually get to see it. Speaking of invisible people, I've never seen Andrea yet, does she really exist or is she like Tino in My So-Called Life? Everyone is always talking about Tino but he never actually turns up on-screen, not even once. The guy who was cast to play that part had one cushy number!

Rabbits are herbivores though so it's probably different for them. For one thing they have a sweet tooth, which carnivores don't.

The real reason your rabbit died is that when your dad said he'd just popped it in the oven to warm it up because it was cold outside, he was actually lying to you. (You remember that "chicken" you ate for dinner later that day?)

I'd guess no. Who would take care of it? Certainly not Mr. & Mrs. Workaholic, Jake & Helen. Quinn wouldn't have time for it either. Quinn is too self-absorbed for a pet. And Daria--get real.

Although, curiously enough, I think of all the Morgendorffers that Daria would be the most likely to care for a pet. What if Trent presented her with a puppy as a present? That could make an interesting situation.

I never imagined that one little mention would draw so much interest.

Actually, the name Tennessee is, as I remember from history class, supposed to be taken from a Cherokee Indian word meaning "bend in the river" or something like that. (I kind of think the Cherokees were one of the coolest of the Indian tribes.) Sure enough, the Tennessee River does take a grand turn southward into Northern Alabama before turning north to join the Ohio River. When Tennessee split off of North Carolina (Like Daria, Tennessee is a spin-off.) they initially named it after Benjamin Franklin but finally ended up naming the state after the river that runs through it.

I take it that no one here is a country music fan. Me neither. But I can appreciate the tastes of those who are. They seem to be just as mystified by my devotion to the TV show Daria. The first country music record was supposed to have been cut at Bristol, Tennessee (I think the city was named after some place in England or something.) Now most of that activity has ended up in the state capital at Nashville.

On the one hand it's argued that a "sensitive male" gets the babes. It worked for O'Neil, assuming you by any stretch might consider Ms. Bartch a babe. OTOH, some women say they hate "sensitive males" and prefer "real men." I'm sooo confused. It isn't easy being a guy. Women have it so much easier.

Well the religious right in the US has some powerful friends in government and the media. A few years ago the CBS network pulled Mighty Mouse off the air under pressure from religious groups. Supposedly (someone correct me if i'm wrong) there was a scene, in one episode, where Mighty Mouse sniffed a flower. Soon after, some group claimed that the flower symbolised cocaine. The show was soon taken off the air. Ellen was probably taken off the air due to the same pressure (then again, IMHO, it wasn't such a great show regardless of Ellen's sexuality). I guess my point is if Daria switched teams it would likely be cancelled or exiled to after 10pm with a tv-13 or a nc-17 rating. Then again if South Park can get away with half the things they do, Daria could too. But if it isn't broken......

If I sound paranoid or fearful of the religious right, yes, I guess I am. I live in central Florida. According to Pat Robertson, God is going to unleash his wrath on central Florida in the form of earthquakes, hurricanes, terrorist bombings, fires, etc. Why? Because the city of Orlando hosted a gay and lesbian convention. I am scared. Hurricane's in Florida? Who would have ever guessed?

Hardly, but let's not debate about the "liberal media"

The religous right ALONG with parent groups.

That's the key. After she came out, the whole show was designed around makng semi-amusing jokes about her sexuality. It just wasn't funny anymore.

Not to mention it would make it seem kinda populist.

Pat Robertson should NOT be held as an example of the religous right, anymore than the Black Panthers are the paragon of Civil Rights.

Anymore? "Ellen" the show was never funny. It was desperately tedious. I attempted to sit through it once or twice, and the writing was so bad, I couldn't help but cringe, because I was so embarassed for everyone involved. (And there were a few funny people involved in the show, like one of the Higgins Boys, and Ellen herself was a good standup comic.)

If a sitcom about an unfunny lesbian had gotten big ratings, you can believe that it's still be on. The problem is not that most viewers aren't tolerant, (heck, "Will and Grace" is still doing relatively well, and it doesn't suffer as much from the unfunnyness of "Ellen," even if it is a bit contrived), the basic Hollywood question is, "Are people watching it?" If the answer is yes, the it gets renewed. If the answer is no, it ends up in the dustbin. (To borrow a word from our English participants.)

Remember the Hollywood mantra "Butts in seats, butts in seats...." And forget what any protest group says, because if it puts butts in seats, it's all free publicity... (if not, well, they decided to respond to their more sensitive viewers -- yeah, right, they just wanted to cut their losses.)

Precisely. In fact, the only thing I would fear would be the opposite-- a softening of her character by the suits in order to get more Quinns watching and buying all of the beauty treatments advertised. I mean, come on, would anyone who watches the show really *care* about a search for the next unknown supermodel? Sheesh!

See my point, supra.

Pat Robertson is the spokesperson for smug bastards everywhere, but not necessarily the religious right in the US. Same goes double for Jerry Falwell. (A HS friend of mine spent a two-year hell at his "Liberty" University-- where, oddly enough, you're not free to do anything except constantly pay fines... but that is another story.)

The point is, you can find jerks, kooks, and busybodies anywhere you look, but for some reason, we seem to breed more of them here in the good ol' nosy US of A. (GONUSA?)

Excelent point. If I remeber correctly the show underwent one name change, was put on hiatus several times for retooling, and went through at least 3 or 4 cast changes. The fact that it was around for so long proved that bad shows can survive. How long has Veronica's Closet been on the air? At least 3 or 4 seasons (a good timeslot always helps.)

Protest groups definitely seem to have lost the influence they may have had. When Mighty Mouse caused an uproar it was cancelled. When a kid in Chicago set his couch on fire in the name of Beavis, lighters became childproof and BNB could no longer chant "fire, fire." Now South Park is out there saying words on TV I have NEVER heard outside of HBO or Cinemax. South Park seems to be immune to the protests. Why? South Park made a lot of money and got huge ratings.

Honestly, this scenario has never crossed my mind. Scary.

Well he was a key member of the religious right in his day. He helped start groups like the Moral Majority, the Christian Coalition, Focus on the Families, etc.. Ellen was cancelled because it was boring, not because Ellen DeGeneres "came out." The show originally started out boring and went downhill from there. I'd long ago quit watching. Once they thought they could get by on the lesbian issue alone, no one else was watching either.

If Daria were a lesbian then why would she react the way she does around certain male characters? Frequently around Trent she's shown the reddened cheeks, in fact that was the basis of an entire episode. She exhibited the same reaction around Ted DeWitt-Clinton. Jane has made no secret of her heterosexual nature either. There's nothing wrong with that. Daria spends time with Jane because she sees Jane as a friend. There's nothing wrong with having friends. As I once read in Playboy Magazine, "Having friends will get you through times of no sex better than having sex will get you through times of having no friends."

While Daria appears to be built like a beanpole in her usual attire, we've seen ample evidence in more than one episode that Daria is most definitely built like a girl--"Quinn the Brain," "The Teachings of Don Jake," "ILL," "Road Worrier," and "I Don't" are some that come immediately to mind.

Besides, Daria just ACTS--well--Girlish. Not a boy.

You can always tell a woman--but you can't tell her much.

I thought the Caroline in the City scenario was plausible, but a stretch. Still, the networks have become increasing gay tolerant and during the course of four seasons may have written Charlie to be of questionable orientation to draw in a gay demographic. You see what you want to see. After all what does NBC care as long as it's pulling in more viewers. In any case I attribute this guy's perspective to misjudging the characters. However, misjudging Daria's character is often catastrophic in understanding the show. And as we can see our friend Susanne here needs to brush up on her reading comprehension.

Your orientation has nothing to do with your argument. Mentioning this only weakens your point by emphasizing that you *want* Daria to be gay. Everyone identifies with the show one way or another, however, you are projecting. This shows an emotional bias for rest of your argument.

Daria genius? No. Smart? Yes. Dexter: boy genius. Dee Dee: Brittany's younger years?

It's a good thing Daria doesn't have a crush on Trent otherwise that would conflict with her *complete* lack of interest in boys. Contrary to popular belief Daria has met the right guy. Twice. Trent and Ted. What do they have other guys lack? Trent might be a slacker and Ted stuck in the 1900's but they each had self-respect, integrity, and ethics. Daria respected them because they were true onto thine self. Like Daria they don't compromise who they are for other people's expectations. The best way to explain this is, ironically, through Quinn. In "Monster" Quinn gave us a fleeting glimpse into her being. There was more to her than the shallow exterior we see everyday. But she choose her fashion fate because she rather be popular for the wrong reasons than alone for the right ones. Here is the Daria Quinn split (again seen in "Quinn the Brain"). Daria prefers substance unlike Quinn, the queen who rules over mindless drones like herself.

Time-out. I admit I haven't seen "Malled" or "That was Then, This is Dumb" or read the books. But I can say I'm pretty damn sure there is no running joke throughout the series. There are some running themes: As mentioned by another dariante when Daria wins she loses (ex. "See Jane Run", "The New Kid", "College Bored"). And don't forget the ultimate insult: the Quinn comparison as one of my favorite scenes points out (paraphrased for protection):

Ted: Well...My parents warned me some kids can be...you know...shallow.

Daria: You don't think I'm shallow do you? Ted: You do remind me of that one popular girl...whats her name? Quinn! That's it! You two look like you'd be best friends. SSW: Next on Sick Sad World!

Those must be the episodes I [address] to self: Lawyers and consultants no longer earn six figured salaries.

Multiple Choice:The previous statement implies... A. It's now legal for underage girls to sleep with males 18 and over (aka statutory rape). B. Brains, personality, and violent tendencies don't matter as long as he has a dick. C. Like Daria I'm single, therefore, I'm gay. D. All of the above.

Correct me if I'm wrong but...The only episode that can come even close to being construed to this level is "See Jane Run". Jane had purposely become a jock and sold her integrity in the process. Jane had sold out and Daria was hurt. Daria distraught over Jane's love or betrayal? Hmmm... When I pick up "The Daria Diaries" I'll be sure to read all the secret love letters Daria's been writing to Jane.

B&B knew? Are you implying knowledge? B&B had knowledge? Let me get this straight. B&B could recognize Daria's queerer tendencies but not their own fathers?

Did it really? It's a shame it didn't work for you. But it was a nice touch not including any proof to support your claims.
