South Park ep

I saw an episode of South Park in which Shelly, the 12 year old older sister of Stan, babysits Cartman and invites over her scumbag 22 year old boyfriend. Who's a musician. With a band. An inept band.

I think this was more than slightly meant as a dark parody of Daria and Trent. What do you guys think?

I personally just reckon theyre taking a stab at a very stereotypical group of older guys who pretend to be rockers and chase after younger girls because they cant get girls their own age.

I don't think so, Daria never got it on with Trent, and has never shown any inclination to sing for Mystik Spiral. Trent has never actively shown any interest in Daria in a romantic way.

Funny you should mention South Park, I noticed that a Brian Graden is mentioned in the South Park credits as Program Development. Is this the same Brian Graden that I sent a letter to?

Shelly never actually "gets it on" with her boyfriend either. She _won't_ "put out", an important part of the plot hinges on that.

Done to _death_ in fanfic.

The reason I think this was a _dark_ parody (like most SP parodies) is that Shelly's an obnoxious, violent idiot and her boyfriend was a total skeeveball. Basically, I think it was an version of the Daria / Trent situation (up until the end of Season 3) as it would be with the age gap bigger and the characters (much) less admirable.

If this were an SP parody of Daria, it would have been EXTREMELY obvious. Shelly would've been wearing a green coat and glasses, the boyfriend would have been wearing a t-shirt and would've spoken with a raspy monotone. Many other obvious clues would have been given. If they were going to send up Daria, they would've gone with one of the more well known sub-plots. The Daria/Trent thing is extremely subtle.

I think you're reading too much into a plot that's been noted many times in real life to ascribe to a single cartoon series.

Any inclination to sing for Mystic Spiral so far in the series, you mean.

Trent has never actively

I thought Pierce Me was pretty darn suggestive of the possibility that Trent may have harbored some feelings towards Daria. "You'd look hot in a black dress"? Of course he didn't act on those feelings but that's what fanfic is for. And hopefully a fifth (and sixth) season.

Probably. Isn't Comedy Central a Viacom company like MTV?

Jeff M.

No. Comedy Central is a Time Warner company -- oops, I mean an AOL-TIME WARNER company. (Then again, who knows, this time next year it could be VIACOM-AOL -TIME WARNER-FOX-UPN-DISNEY-WESTINGHOUSE-AT&T-BMG-SONY-SEAGRAM'S-GANNETT-ANY-OTH ER-MEDIA-OUTLET-WE-CAN-BORG-AND-NOT-RUFFLE-FEATHERS-AT-THE-FCC-OR-THE FTC-OR-THE-JUSTICE-DEPARTMENT company).

Frankly, I don't care (for the moment, anyway) -- just give me Season 6 of Daria & Season 2 of Gilmore Girls & let those media megalomerates can merge & mate & fornicate all they want to. I won't say a word. Cancel my favorite shows and put more [insert crude adjective here] "reality" shows like Survivor & Temptation Island & Jackass than are less like entertainment and more like cerebral sodomy . . . damn, I'm too angry to finish this train of thought now!

Meanwhile, Brian Graden is still at MTV. Address in in my sig (same ol' yadda yadda yadda . . . . )

I think Comedy Central is part of Viacom, which owns MTV, VH1, etc., and which is now part of the conglomerate with CBS. This is why the Super Bowl stuff on CBS will start with "Super Bowl TRL."

In the future there will be two companies: Disney and AOL-Time Warner. Between them, they'll own EVERYTHING.

This stems from George Orwell's "1984", written in 1948. The people in the studio could see you too, so you never knew if someone would catch you not paying attention.

The ABC/Lorimar series "Max Headroom" used this, too. Televisions were always on, and while there was not necessarily surveillance going on, each screen was constantly monitored so that ratings were real time.

The show was a sometimes caustic take on the video culture, and proved to bite the hand that fed it a few too many times, while being completely incomprehensible to the masses of viewing dullards.

I saw the parallels, too, but didn't think it was indicative of anything more than my thinking perhaps a wee bit too much about the Daria series. Bad suburban garage bands are bad suburban garage bands.

And let's thank our stars that the Trent/Daria thang didn't work out anything like the SP scenario....ewww.

As for the Trent quote about Daria looking "hot in that dress" mentioned elsewhere...well, he's a sighted boy, and she's a girl...but that doesn't mean he had wanted a date. In fact, it seemed to me like the kind of thing one _girlfriend_ would say to another, oddly enough.

You all realized the Trent/Daria thang was NEVER going to come to fruition, didn't you? ;-)

Al

JMorris830Al B

Well, Daria sure didn't see it as such at the time. And neither did a lot of people on this newsgroup. Mr. Lane was always a tad ambiguous where Ms. Morgendorffer was concerned. He liked her obviously, but how?

Of course NOW we realize that.Personally I think Lane Miserables was the point where it started to dawn that Daria and Trent weren't going to be. I mean when you start to question your crush...... Now everybody can speculate how this Daria/Tom thing is going to proceed. :)

I'm just being a stinker. :-) But it seemed fairly apparent that, on "kids TV," there would not be romantic involvement between a 22- (?) year-old and a 17-year-old.

Prime-time, maybe...as long as everyone suffered appropriately in the end.

Besides: They ALLLL go for musicians...but then they learn. Oh, they LEARN!

Impishly,

I don't think MTV considers Daria "kids TV". They usually showed it at 9 or 10 pm, for one thing.
