Birthdays and cable (and a nugget of joy)

Yep. My birthday has arrived again today (the 23rd). 19 now. (I seem to have this weird feeling that it's Shez' birthday too? Hmm, perhaps that's just a misfiring of some synapses, but perhaps not.) This is actually semi-relevant to the group for a single reason-- my parents are letting me get cable TV as my present this year! So, once again I will have Daria... I haven't seen *any* episodes in the second half of this season, nor have I seen the movie. Therefore I sorta dropped out of the group. But I can come back now. ::bounces around happily:: (I missed this place!) As soon as I have caught up on some episodes I will be returning. From the looks of some of the subject headings, it should be veeery interesting...

On a nearly completely unrelated note, I was reading on one of my favorite web sites (http://www.opendiary.com, where you can write a journal and it's anonymous but for anyone on the site to see -- it's actually an extremely helpful to vent and still sorta be heard), and I came across the diary of a 13-year-old who was extremely excited that she found the name of the asian girl in the Fashion Club. You see, they just think the fashion club is utterly cool so she and her 3 friends are going to start pretending they're them and acting like them. This girl was going to take on the character of Tiffany. Ack! I can't decide whether to laugh or cringe, so I'm doing both.

Anyway. I go now, but I will return as soon as I can. :-D

Hey, maybe you're telepathic! Hmm, I guess this might explain why I can't recall anything I did yesterday.

In a curiously synchronous move I've just installed a TV/mpeg2 card on my PC this week, so I can watch tv in a window more easily and record video clips straight into MPEG2 format. Now all I need is a hard disk in the terabyte size range and I can throw my VCR away!

Hey, at least you've seen half the season! Over here we've just found out that Kate has been lying to us and the "brand new season" is in fact more repeats of Season 3.

too old, eh? well i'm 18 next birthday. yay! :D after that i reckon i'll stop counting. hopefully my 18th birthday will be more fun than my 17th, on which i... i can't remember what i did, but not because of the alcohol, because there was notably little.

You might want to look into burning VideoCDs. A quick web search should come up with a number of FAQs. The VideoCDs should work in any DVD player that can read the medium, and can be played back on most modern computers. CDRs cost less than video tapes! Just keep in mind that only a few DVD players will read CDR media. Aiwa, Phillips, Apex, and some JVC models come to mind. -mike

You can IIRC also play a video CD on some models of Playstattion if you have an adapter to do so, whcich can be handy if you want to transfer them onto Video tape (for those people that don't have a computer/DVD player).

If you could help me with this: my girlfriend's birthday is Thursday the 28th. She says she does not want anything for her birthday other than maybe a rose. What should I get the girl who has almost everything? I was thinking of a phone with caller ID built in, but that is a little too impersonal. The birthday cake thing is covered, I am getting her a nice ice cream cake from the local store. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! (and that applies to all other readers too, any ideas would be greatly appreciated)

I know this is a bit too late, but perhaps this will help others...

My suggestion for what to get someone who either already "has everything" ;-) or doesn't like stuff is to make a donation to a non-profit organization they support in their name. Or what I think is a REALLY good idea for someone who's particularly interested in a specific animal is to "adopt" one for them. You can very likely do this from your local zoo or any of the many organizations that do this. For my boyfriend's birthday in December, I'm getting him a Humboldt Penguin ZooParent sponsorship at the Oregon Zoo. Penguins are his patron animal, so to speak. It comes with a picture of the penguin in question, some neat info on the little feathered guys, passes the zoo's annual behind the scenes animal tours (COOL stuff), and the knowledge that you're contributing to saving an endangered species.

Anyway, I hope you found something suitable for your girlfriend!
