An excellent episode. I'm glad to see that after the last two. It looks like we may be seeing more of Tom. And I think we can FINALLY put to rest the idea of a Daria/Trent relationship.
Let the 'shipper/anti-'shipper debates begin anew! :-)
Just saw "Jane's Addition"! I had to tape it (a friend called) and I just watched it now. I have a question for you all: has Jane ever been posessive of Daria? Daria has been rather territorial of Jane in some episodes. Tonight's, for example, as well as "See Jane Run" and even in "The Invitation" slightly (I believe it was a comment regarding Bobby Big-Head) and I'm sure there have been more times. Why is this?
Joe wrote: <And I think we can FINALLY put to rest the idea of a Daria/Trent relationship.
Grrrrrr. Please say no? Am I the Lone Shipper (that actually sounds kinda cool-I feel tough!) or are there Daria/Trent devotees that haven't yet scurried to post? What's so wrong with a relationship between them? Obviously I'm not looking to view major animiated-action, but it could be sweet. Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed (and my favorite fan fics bookmarked).
The Daria/Trent relationship is not dead, it may be on hiatus for awhile, on life support, but not dead. Remember one thing, when the season first started, when we got hints of the 3rd season plotlines, Glenn Eichler himself said that the D/T relationship would be addressed, but NOT resolved, it is in this one statement that shippers can hang their hopes on, and as Jordan said in another post, I believe that the situation between the 2 is reversed, Daria was unusually calm around Trent, this may have been due to the tension with the project, but moreso Jane's situation with Tom, anyways, and Trent seemed unusually nervous around Daria. Trent has realized the fact that there is/was a crush, and "the kiss" states that. I think the relationship is still there, Trent just has to re-earn Daria's belief in him again(for lack of a better word). The crush may be on the backburner, way in the back, but it's not gone. Remember Glenn's statement, so it will somehow be brought up again when season 4 starts, ho I'm not sure.
Jane is Daria's only anchor in the sea of stupidity we like to call Lawndale. She is her *only* and best friend. She is not ready to share her.
kinda
yet scurried
I *was* a shipper, and I still have a soft spot to see that storyline once in a while. I think I was a shipper because I love our heroine and wanted her to have everything she wanted. It also didn't hurt that Trent is cute. *Now* though, I think my only interest in that is the fact that it allows us to see a vulnerable side of Daria that rarely comes out, whether or not they get together.
Yep. I agree with all stated above.

Helen- You know I used to wear miniskirts...but life goes on.
I don't think it is still up, but on Outpost Daria, it said the situation would not be resolved this season, only addressed, when season 3 started. Martin J. Pollard, when you see this, let us know if I was right or I was hallucinating about seeing this,if I did, it wouldn't be the 1st time I hallucinated seeing something though. :-)
Jane's her ONLY friend. The only real friend she's ever had, AFAIK.
In "The Invitation", she saves Jane from doing something stupid. In "See Jane Run" it turns out that getting involved with the runner would have been stupid. In THIS episode, however, we saw that Daria's jealousy is severe enough that she was even hostile to a good guy. Which was undoubtedly, for Jane, an unpleasant surprise.
Right now, because Trent isn't willing to be reliable. As came out during their camoflagued discussion.
Given that the episode ended with Tom and Jane definitely going out together (they were holding hands in the last scenes) and that this show has generally been very good in terms of continuity, I think so.
For the immediate future, yes. Though I think the situation's actually reversed a bit ... Trent definitely finds Daria attractive now, but Daria has given up on Trent ever displaying any responsibility.
All I can say is OMG. I never would have expected that. There I was, watching Daria... minding my own business... then unsuspectingly. And to think.. i thought this would be an only ok episode. But Trent's irresponsibility surprised me. I mean.. i we learned he's like that.. but i didn't think he would be that way when he knew Daria and Jane's project and grades were at stake... well, more so Jane's grade than Daria's but still.Well, at least we get a new character out of it.. plus lots of analyzing...and of course LOADS of fanfiction. THERE IS A GOD !!!!
(Christina) "Oh Daria, don't be shy.Show me your boobs"--Jane("Too Cute"),"I can't shoot my own mother. Not with paint,anyway."--Daria("The Daria Hunter"),"I'm not miserable,I'm just not like *them*"--Daria("The Misery Chick")
Actually, his failing Jane was even more shocking than his failing Daria. He loves Jane deeply, as has been obvious for a long time, and probably has ever since her birth. This shows how severely unreliable he can be, and this is also what shocked Daria. To the point where she confronted him, and when he failed to give an answer she could accept, rejected him.
I think this is why Trent wouldn't go out with Daria. The age thing is just a smokescreen...he doesn't think much of himself. Did you notice that when Trent talked about not wearing a watch, he mentioned that he wouldn't wear a watch because watches depress him?
There were some interesting quotes in the J17 article "interviewing" the characters...if I remember correctly the answers were written either by Glenn Eichler or someone on the writing team. Trent says something to the effect that he's not good enough for her.
I suspect that Trent and Daria will remain good friends, with the friendship growing and strengthening all through Season 4 and beyond. (MTV willing) Despite the last scene in "Lane Miz" where Daria fantasises about what a "tamed" Trent would be like, I think she's over him. Big time.
I deleted what I thought was all of the text before I started typing, looked at my screen, then realised I had written: "This is just a theory about the spamblock.". Isn't that great? Damn, now I've forgotten my original theory.
"Jane's Addiction" caused me to consider one question: When Trent was a student at Lawndale High, did he have to take O'Neill's self-esteem class, as Jane and Daria did? If so, it doesn't seem to have worked. Trent's music appears to be the one thing he's had faith in. But we saw him "bastardize" (for lack of a better word) his music for that car commercial in TLF. Then he puts down his own music in JA in that scene at The Zon: "The second set is just the stuff that wasn't good enough for the first set. I wouldn't stay for it myself if I wasn't in the band." And finally, his faith in his craft seems to abandon him, when he can't even come up with 30 seconds of music for Jane & Daria's project. True, he hasn't given up entirely on his career, because he still goes off to rehearsal after talking to Daria. But ISTM that being unable to produce the music hurt Trent far more than it hurt Jane & Daria. He wasn't able to use his one skill to help out the 2 people he cares about the most. And even though Daria forgave him, it looked to me as if he hadn't yet forgiven himself as he left the pizza parlor. Honestly, I don't think Daria's self esteem was ever as low as Trent's seemed to be at that point.
As for the Daria + Trent equation, I think it still remains unsolved, but not unsolvable. Maybe in the next two or three seasons (hint, hint MTV), we'll see them both mature some more, and get involved with other people. I'm sure that they will still remain friends. But, I doubt now that Jane will keep trying to play matchmaker b/t her best friend and her brother.
Frankly, I'm glad that Season 3 ended as it did. Daria may have had a schoolgirl crush on Trent for the last 39 episodes, but she has never been blinded by the fantasy that Trent was flawless. We saw that in WWIH (she called him "flaky"). In LM, she envisioned a possible future with Trent as a deadbeat with no real ambition for anything, not even his music. And in LA, Daria tells Tom that she hopes Trent does make it as a musician, because that overly laid-back attitude isn't going to get him a job in any other field (except farming, maybe). Daria cares for Trent and probably always will -- almost no one forgets their first love. But it's clear to see that in Daria's case, love was anything but blind.
There's always the likelihood that Trent will do a complete 180 & clean up his act, and finally earn Daria's respect, not just her infatuation. Meanwhile, I think it's time that Ted Dewitt-Clinton & maybe Lerman reappear in Daria's life. She needs to go out with some other guys. (Interesting to see whether a Daria-Trent- Some Other Guy love triangle forms.)
And YES to more of Jane and Tom! Jesse + Jane -- what was I THINKING???? Jane's EASEL is less thick and wooden than Jesse! Note to Michelle K-H: What effect, if any, might this have on your fanfics? Are D & T going to stay happily married in your parallel universe, or will the "reality" from Season 3 start creeping in?
And BTW: what is it with old, rusty blue cars in this episode? Both Trent & Tom need to pay Happy Herb a visit!
Most people who have attended a "self-esteem" class (raises hand sheepishly) know that they're a joke. (as was the one in "Esteemsters")
When you need money (and tires, and most importantly STUDIO TIME) you'll do things you might not like. People seem to have downplayed the importance of some studio time to a poor band. It could be the difference between a recording deal/no recording deal.
set is just
That's just a general rule, meaning that they put less effort into the second set. Plus he didn't want Daria to feel bad about leaving early.
Jane & Daria's project. True, he hasn't given up entirely on his <SNIP> Trent wanted to produce something up to his standards. And we all know what it's like having standards we can't live up to.

Well here are your options...You can buy a car for anywhere from $6000 to $15,000 and make payments every month. Or you can by a "old, rusty" car for $320.00. (The exact price of my last car) Personally I regret having given up the "rusty old" car, especially when I have to make a car payment!
PS insidently, my first car was a '78 Chevy Nova not unlike Tom's car (except my doors & hood & trunk were of a different chevy nova, and where a different color from the rest of the car.) God I miss that car!
and it's not so much like he abandoned/bastardized his normal work, he just made a piece of crap for money. Anyone can do that. He should be glad he's not a writer with everyone telling him to fullfill his potential in school and end up writing totally lame pieces of crap for grades and starting even earlier selling his soul. Oh, wait, that's me. Never mind.

Yes, our potential to be totally idiotic is amazing...
The new trend in education is that it's not important for students to learn things, just for them to feel good about themselves. The theory behind this comes from people who think the government should take over the family's role in instructing children how to act, right and wrong, etc. Their rhetoric sounds good "Well, knowing right and wrong is at least as important as knowing long division, isn't it?" I dunno, I'd rather the guy who engineered the plane I'm on knows his math than knows whatever passes as morality these days... coming from those people, probably something about feeling good about yourself and not judging (oh, you're going to be a crack whore when you grow up? Oh, that's nice.)
Basically, the government is trying to be everything to everyone-- mother, father, sister, brother... hence their trying to render the actual versions of these people obseslete...
Err, that was more than you needed to know.

1) Students who don't actually know things are going to get a nasty shock when they encounter the real world and are completely ignorant.
2) Smart students will realize that the "self-esteem" they are being offered is phony and thus will not value it much.
3) Not-so-smart students will take the "self-esteem" at face value and will become horribly (and possibly violently) offended when others fail to esteem them as highly as their own inflated self-image (*)
This is an inherently totalitarian ideal ... it doesn't improve matters that the government is really, really INEPT at taking over this role.
In many ways it is, but schools aren't in a position to teach kids "right and wrong". Only in the most dysfunctional families will teachers be anywhere NEAR as important to the students emotionally and morally as their own parents. And, again, the totalitarian implications are frightening.
Indeed. Of course, the dirty little secret of the "self-esteem" pushers is that most of the students who they get to experiment on the most fully will be the poor, and after they've received this "education" they won't be fit for anything other than the most menial labor, in which they can cultivate all the self-esteem they desire.
yourself and not
We prefer to call them "substance addiction challenged erotic industry service workers". :-D
(*) It's interesting that in the last decade "dissing" someone, i.e. treating them "disrespectfully", is now considered (by the underclass) to be sufficient motive to justify murder.
I never took a self-esteem class, but in my 9th grade Health class we took a self-esteem unit. They handed out self-esteem surveys which we filled out as homework. My self-esteem got a B-. It was a very informative experience. :)
The class I took wasn't called 'self-esteem class' but it had a lot of touchy feely nonsense that drove me batty. It was supposed to be a class to teach us how to study, but the teachers ideas on studying was basically 'feel good about yourself'! For example, if you offended someone, you would then be forced to compliment them. My constant 'bad attitude' and frequent use of such compliments as 'Nice shirt!' caused the teacher to REALLY hate me. But the funny thing is she couldn't flunk me!( that would hurt my delicate little self-esteem!!)
In middle school, they made me join this bull-stuff self esteem group called the "Friendship Club". Everyone in there (6 people) was ostracized from the social groups because of their 1) weight, 2) clothes they wore, 3) intelligence, 4) looks, 5) all of the above. They made us spout out drivel like "you don't have to blow out my candle to make yours burn brighter". What made it worse was that it was chaired by the Special Education teacher, which caused the social groups to ridicule us even more, like there was something wrong with us. No wonder I'm so screwed up.

I know what you mean-- my first car was a '75 Ford Torino. Talk about your battleship on wheels, that was it. I remember fitting 8 people in it one time, with plenty of room to spare. I also remember that the driver's side window never stayed up, the AC never worked, and it got a whopping 6, yes that's 6 miles per gallon. (But it was okay-- it had a 26-gallon gas tank.) ;-)
My 1st vehicle you could easily call the real life version of "The Tank". It wasn't a van, and the handles were still there, otherwise, the same. It was a big, black 1977 Chevy Blazer, I got it right after I got my license, my parents wanted me to have something that wouldn't fold up like a ball of tinfoil if it ever got hit, I guess. I liked it very much, except for 3 things: 1)The passenger side door had to be held closed with rope, meaning everyone had to get in on the drivers side 2)it had an 8-track player, with tapes, but never heard of any of the bands, and 3)It was terrible to try to stop on icy roads, one day on the way to school in the middle of Feb. we spun and did a 180 degree spin in the middle of an intersection, another time I was on my way to school, we skidded and before we could stop ran into a parked car and tore off the driver side rear view mirror off the door, try peeling rubber on ice after a dead stop in a '77 Blazer which went about as fast as a tank, and was as heavy as one as well, lucky for me the owner never knew who did it.
I'm driving my "first car" right now, and it's...ta-daaaa!...an '88 Chevy Blazer. Big, hulking, very modern looking, dark silvery grey exterior, dark silvery grey interior. Cassette player, AM/FM, power drive/steering/windows, air conditioning came standard, etc. My dad had owned it since it was brand new and has now sorta unofficially transferred it over to me. Which is cool because it's all paid for. Only drawback? I have to use really expensive gasoline. The kind that's $1.30/gallon. Which I figure will short-change me a few beans on this trip I'm about ready to take (four hour long drive to Dallas...and it might even be a bit longer [god I hope not]). Wish me luck.

Gas in the United States is relatively inexpensive compared to other countries. In the Detroit, Michigan area, for example, unleaded regular currently goes for about $1.25 a gallon, while unleaded premium is about $1.45 a gallon. The prices fluctuate depending on where you go and what station is selling it, of course, but that's about average. (Most cars only need regular; they don't derive much benefit from premium. Other cars may need it, of course, but your average passenger car gets by just fine with regular.) Check back tomorrow, though, as prices will likely have changed again. :-)

We had a Ford Torino Station Wagon of similar vintage for about 6 months. We were able to fit 11 people into that vehicle, including 2 in for want of a better word the rumble seat. This happened when Richie, myself, and 9 of our best friends all went to see "The Doors" movie together. What a night!
Damn thing had hideous suspension problems...that was the demise of the vehicle. Still, it was cool to have a car that could host such a party on wheels.
I don't understand what drives people to wanting a new car every year. I'm under constant assault from the family to change my "piece of cr*p" for a "proper car". It doesn't make sense to me to put a lot of money into something that will decrease rapidly in value, and has a chance of being destroyed.
I had one car written off that I'd put 3000 pounds and 1.5 years of my life into creating (it was how I expressed myself) and I got 1200 pounds from the insurance. So now I drive a '79 fiesta. Last week a guy reversed into the side of it in McDonalds car park and all I cared about was that my big mac didn't get cold.
Of course the evil government will stop me in the end with the 3 pound plus a gallon fuel costs but until then I'm sticking with old cars.
and the other advantage of an old car is that people fear you. When I'm driving my car now, people cut me off all the time. In my old car they would generally give me a wide margin (figuring that I have nothing to lose!) And I still think those old metal bumbers are WAY better than the ones they use on newer cars. One time a guy rear ended me. His car was totaled. My bumber was pushed in a fraction and some rust got knocked off. Also one time when I was parellel parking this lady who owned the car in front comes running out & moves her car!
plus, if you have an old, crappy car, no one will want to steal it when there are newer cars around... come on, look at all these new cars! You don't want an 89 Shadow! Really!

Well, I don't think I really can do anything about how my Dariaverse has evolved and how divergent it has become from the "real" Dariaverse. So I will leave it as it is: a parallel but different place.
She still will, but it will now be prodding Trent moreso to realize that he can be good enough for Daria, because she knows that they both could do to learn from each other,(Trent to become more responsible, and Daria to become more open), and still can be a good match for each other.
If you couldn't tell from all my comments since this ep. aired, yes I am a 'shipper, IS THAT SO WRONG??!! (runs and hides from the mob of anti-shippers:-)
And it really affected Daria's opinion of him in a negative manner. He was definitely starting to get interested in her romantically, I think starting in "Lane Miserables" (due to the contrast between her and Monique). Now, he'll have to prove himself to her before she'll be that interested in him again.
self
I agree. Incidentally, one reason why Daria DID forgive him is because she does really care for him ... she's just not all that sure any more that it could work out, given her perfectionism and his laziness.
I still think they'll get together ... eventually.
Well, for one thing now she has a boyfriend of her own to deal with.
How could it be, for someone so perceptive?
I think he will, in the end. Trent, I believe, is definitely more than he seems.
I think people are reacting the way they are because he kissed her. To me, that clearly was a "goodbye" kiss. They will be friends, sure. But there is NO CHANCE of a relationship. NONE.
