Personal thoughts on "Jake of Hearts"

Hmm...the comments made earlier about Jake becoming more and more, well, cartoonish certainly seemed to apply with this episode. That's probably the only really groan-worthy bit of this episode. As far as Grandma...what's her name again?...anyways, as far as she's concerned, I certainly got the impression right off the bat that she'd spell trouble for the Morgendorffer household. I mean, Helen might not be all that knowledgable about nursing someone through an illness, but she certainly does not have to be lectured about it like a four-year-old.

The bit with Quinn and her sudden desires to become a doctor...LOL, I thought she was only kidding till I saw her with those books and everything...mygod, she *was* intending on doing so, even if it was only because she was panicked about her dad getting a heart attack and the only thing she could think of to alleviate her worry was to funnel it into medical study. Though towards the end there she seemed like she *might* actually be good at it if she *really* gave a darn and wanted to do it. One of those indicatory moments that screams, "Quinn's got a brain too, but she just doesn't *use* it!"

Daria...poor, poor, Daria. Stuck at home with two psychos (Jake and the Grandma chick) and two people who aren't quite the way they normally are (Helen and Quinn), AND at school with those two really annoying Z93 DJs. Oooh, about the DJs...is this what DJs are like in other parts of the country? Really? Thank god I live in San Antonio, then, because I know the DJs here show a LOT more reserve than that. And to set up shop in a high school and then be a real detriment to intellectualism with things like "100 Ways to Say Sex" and "Why does Z93 make you 'Mental in the Morning'?"...man, Principal Li is sinking deeper and deeper into sub-Medazzaland levels of sanity now. Greed is no longer the word anymore. And if she were principal in one of the high schools here in the city and doing something like that the parents would get her fired.

As far as Grandma's attitude towards females is concerned...I don't even want to get into *that* pile of unopened cans of worms. As a feminist I am personally affronted by real-life Grandmas who insist on turning back The Revolution another fifty years or so and whose thoughts and ideas only serve to fuel the propagandistic load of crap that buffoonish sonofabitches like Rush "I look so ugly I won't even screw myself" Limbaugh and Dr. Laura "Uncle Tom-ming the entire female species" Schlesinger lay on unsuspecting (and suspecting) ears. Daria did a great job in slamming her down hard toward reality. (And kudos too to Helen and Quinn for being at least slightly forward-thinking.)

Heck, Quinn probably doesn't know what a gall bladder is. If anything they probably wrote that in for copyright reasons (Like in TBH when they played monopoly and Jake was the bulldog, when there isn't one in the real thing). That's my best guess.

I sort of had a problem with those segments. Most of the time Daria was outside when they tried to humiliate her on the air. Since the only reason she should have to be outside is either going home or getting to school, the high frequency of these run-ins seemed a bit contrived.

Lawndale is a bit further out in the boonies. Not too far, but I've seen principals in far-off places (from civilization) get away with almost everything, including strip-searches. (Which Li looks like she'd implement if she figured she'd get away with it.)

It seemed to me that it was going from day to day quickly... i.e. one DJ scene followed by a home scene, followed by another DJ scene. Therefore we saw about 3-4 mornings. I guess nothing exciting happened in class... :)

All of this was typical cartoon stuff. Fortunately, the rest of the episode makes up for it. But I actually thought Jake was a little less Simpsonian this ep than others. Ultimately, he did discover that he'd gotten ahead of his father by simply being _alive_. One can hope he'll recover from his psychosis, having realized that he's a better father, and having had the chance to discuss the issue with his mother. Still, Jake will always be Jake, whatever that means.

I thought this was really cool. She had very little experience studying, and so started with the wrong stuff, but, had she stuck with it, I think she truely could've eventually done it (probably to Daria's chagrin (sp?)). I think Daria could've been a little more supportive, though. Quinn was ignoring the phone and spending all her time with her nose in a book! (Even if she mad a few inane comments regarding what she was reading...) And what was Daria's response? "Maybe you should start with something a little easier; (at this point I was hopeful, but:) many coloring books feature hearts... and rainbows." Personally, I think that if Quinn were actually to become a brain, Daria's initial response would be even worse than in "Quinn the Brain."

But, of corse, it couldn't last. Jake's okay now, and Quinn has gone back to her old ways.

Most DJ's would probably be much more reserved at a high school than that, at least on the sex part. The thing with Upchuck, and the Mental in the Morning thing, however, are standard fare metal DJ stuff. Still, this provided Daria with one of two opportunites to absolutely *slam* someone, legitimately. In that respect, this almost felt like a season 1 ep. :)

Well, you musn't forget that not _everybody_ supported this "Revolution" you speak of. More likely she's a disgruntled member of the losing side; there are still people who gripe about the outcome of the Civil War, from what I hear.

Dr. Laura "Uncle Tomming" the entire female species? I can't say I've ever listened to her show, but, from what I hear, she's more of the "You dug your grave, now lay in it," sort.

The most annoying thing about the grandmother is that they used the EXACT SAME voice actress as they used for Val in TLG. I kept waiting for grandma to say "Jake, that's so whack! Are you jiggy with me on this?"

We were taught to refer to it as the War Between the States, or the War of Northern Aggression. Guess it's all a matter of where you went to school. ;-)

I find myself totally unable to take this woman seriously. She isn't even a real psychiatrist; she has a degree in something totally non-psych related. I find Howard Stern boring and idiotic. Seems that the only females on his show (with the exception of Robin Quivers) are all these jiggle-jiggle type sexpots who only talk about their body parts and sex stories. I find nothing salacious in his juvenilic humor so I (1) don't understand the uproar about him (other than with fellow feminists, with good reason) and (2) don't understand why people are actually entertained by this guy. I think Don Imus is much more political *and* entertaining...and controversial.
