Anyone else have this problem? (And a plea for Season 5)

I just checked out -- or tried to check out -- MTV's Daria website. ISTM that it take a ridiculously time to load. I timed this most recent upload at 9 minutes, 20 seconds. Does anyone else have a problem with slow uploads, or is it just me? And while I'm at it ... B E G I N

While I'm on the subject of the website, did anyone else play the Trivia Game? If so, you are probably aware of a major faux-pas in this first batch of questions (i.e. the one about the fashion show emcee). Does anyone know how MTV will deal with that (i.e., will they toss that question out, or give everyone credit for it, or what)? And will it screw up my score?

I am hoping that whoever is in charge of this game will be more diligent in proofreading future batches of questions before posting them. When I saw this glaring error, & checked out a previous thread regarding this mistake, my mind flashed back to Michelle Klein-Hass' interview w/ Glen & Susie in TOON Magazine. I believe Susie made the comment that many of the folks at MTV have never even watched Daria. Is it possible that one of those people put this quiz together? Or should I stop being suspicious & chalk it up to an unintentional oversight made by a mere mortal?

S P O I L E R . . .

And, if the former is the case, and that the folks in charge aren't really watching the shows they put on, I fear it could take more than a mere missive on my part to help keep Daria on the air beyond next season. I'm going to actually drop to my knees & pray for this one (hey, it's worked for me before). As I see it, if the programmers aren't watching, I can't see how they'd really care (ratings & revenues notwithstanding). Heck, just look at the trivia quiz for proof of nonchalance. (Yeah, I l know there are more serious things in the world to pray for, but who says you can't approach the Almighty with the relatively trivial?)

And PLEASE, I'm begging y'all -- no 20,000 post threads about the validity of religious beliefs or if there's a God or gods or if Jesse Ventura really exists or stuff along that line. My purpose in bringing up the problems with the website & the quiz is to get all Daria fans on Planet Earth to let the folks in MTV programming know that we DO care about this show & everything related to it. If you haven't done so already, check out Lawndale Commons (Michelle K-H's site) or Paperpusher's site for the addresses. (And e-mail probably won't hurt either.) And the folks in Canada, Europe, Australia -- you can give MTV-US some desperately needed clues too!

Save Daria. Amen.

Hey, check out my website at http://mindy.simplenet.com.

As a poster who's only been on this ng for two months (Thanks again for the fish, Kyle), I'm assuming that the above is a short list (& I mean SHORT list) of topics that have been pounded more than 3-finger poi, right?

And in regard to that fifth topic: Why was KAIN booted from this ng (if that is indeed the case)? And once banished, can a poster ever return? (If the subject is too painful -- or inflammatory-- to talk about here, you can send me an e-mail to the above address. Don't forget to take the spam block out first.)

Not to stray too far from one of the topics of this post, it is imperative that we save Daria. There is far too much garbage on TV these days; Daria is one of less than half a dozen shows I can stand to watch on a regular basis. It is the FIRST show that has prompted me to tape every single episode, including marathons (& I'm on my fourth or fifth tape!). So, to expedite the letter-writing process, here is the person and the address to send your letters:

Brian Graden Executive Vice-President of Programming MTV Networks 1515 Broadway New York, NY 10036-5797

And as Michelle & 'Pusher have pointed out: BE NICE in your letters. Don't cuss & don't jump down their throats. I might hasten to add: check your spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. Write legibly; if your handwriting sucks, type neatly. And apply all those things you probably learned in junior-high school grammar classes (or at least,_ I_ did). The time to act is N-O-W.

Save Daria. Amen.

Who knows what they'll do. They might just give that question as a freebie, if they find out the question is wrong. Knowing MTV however, they'll go about not knowing that they did anything wrong, and only count those who gave the answer as Upchuck.

I think it's the former. MTV is really treating Daria like a second-class show on their schedules, and I bet you that's mainly because most of their staff don't even watch it. Think about all those times when the Daria website has been screwed up. The missing Ask Daria files, the screwed up videos, the even more screwed up schedules.. I mean updating a site isn't rocket science! If these guys could put it together, they would know how to update it. And considering it's one of MTV's more prominent animation shows, you'd *think* it'd have the same amount of attention as the other shows. Add that to the appalling way they're treating the show itself (No DVDs, almost no PR. And what's the deal with the 3pm shows being the determining factor for Season 5, when THEY AREN'T EVEN SHOWING THEM FOR THE WEEK! Grrrr that really gets me), and you know we really need to do something as fans.

Write those letters folks, and a few phonecalls or emails can't hurt either. We gotta save the show here! Don't y'all want to see Daria at least *graduate* from HS?

I agree. WHY is MTV only monitoring viewership of the afternoon episodes? ISTM that MTV is ignoring a HUGE section of their demographic. C'mon, do they STILL think that the target audience is ONLY 12-18? What about those of us -- myself included-- who watched MTV back in the day? Those of us who were 12-18 when Martha Quinn & J.J. Jackson ruled? Those of us who are 18-34 now, and have JOBS in the afternoon? Those of us who are WORKING at 3pm/2pm central time and can't always WATCH Daria? Those of us who may be more like Helen or Jake or even Mr. O'Neill? Those of us who are in a BETTER POSITION to buy all that stuff they advertise b/c we're more likely ot have a STEADY INCOME than a 12-year-old? Does the average 12-18-year-old have a 9-5 job? (If they did, how could they watch MTV at 3pm? And what would a 12 year old be doing working 9-5, in possible violation of child labor laws?) Yeah, those kids may have a lot of "disposable income," but I bet most of the Backstreet Boys/N*sync/whatever boy group is hot now Set gets their "income" from those of us in the 18+ group. (Think: before Quinn got that job in IHON, where did her cash for Cashman's come from? And where does it come from now?)

If they REALLY want to monitor viewer response, why won't they do it at 9pm on Wednesdays, the regularly scheduled time on MTV-US? What are they afraid of? Will it mean that they'll have to dismiss their belief that Daria is just "something for the girls" as they said on that Toonumentary? Are they afraid to appealing to "brains" who hit the books instead of the TV right after school? Are they afraid of airing a show that parents might actually watch and enjoy? B/c if PARENTS are tuning in, then MTV might not be so cool or "edgy?"

Here's a news flash for any MTV or Viacom execs who might be lurking: Not all of your viewers are in junior high or high school. Some of us have full-time jobs. Some of us even have families of our own. Many of us are old enough to drive AND vote. And I'm sure most of us don't look anything like those oiled-up stick figures you keep showing on Global Groove. But guess what: we watch. too. Even if you at MTV are not watching your shows, WE ARE. And some of us enjoy the shows that you broadcast, such as Daria. You have a gold mine with a show that cuts across all demographic lines, as evidenced by the posters on this news group. You have schoolkids. You have adults. You have 12-18, 18-24, 25-34, 35-54, 55-64, 65+. You have lawyers. You have priests. You have college students. You have black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Polynesian, Native American, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Wiccan, Buddist, athiest, Democrat, Republican, Reform, Libertarian, straight, gay, bi, undecided, rich, poor, middle class, blue collar, white collar, shirtless, New Yorkers, Californians, Midwesterners, Deep Southerners,Southwesterners Northwesterners, Canadians, Australians, Europeans -- in short, a fair representation of nearly every demographic group that possibly exists. (And my humblest apologies to any group I've unintentionally left out, but this post/rant is getting too long.)Our numbers are not insignificant. We want to save this show. We want to see Daria & Jane on the air when they themselves are in that 18-34 demographic.

OK people, here's the address to write to and help keep Daria on the air in 2001 (Season 5 in the US):

Brian Graden Executive VP of Programming MTV Networks 1515 Broadway New York, NY 10036-5797

Watch Daria at every possible chance. (And if you can't watch it yourself, pay a 12-18 year old to watch it for you. Seems they could use the money.) [Just kidding.]

Interesting points, Cricket-- all of them. Frankly, I don't understand MTV's actions, either. I don't think anyone does. It would *really* piss me off if, through their own bumbling mismanagement, they kill one of the best damn programs they've ever put on the tube. I know one thing for sure-- I'd sure as hell stop watching, that's for sure. (And, MTV, *that* should scare the crap out of you-- there is a significant demo that watches your network for just the one show-- do you *really* want to alienate them, too? Maybe lose some of those record high 0.5 ratings you've been getting? Hmm?)

Not threatening-- promising, rich.

As one of the First Generation MTV viewers, I had watched it almost religiously in high school (I LIVED for every glimpse of Prince & Nick Rhodes), but started watching less frequently after I graduated from college. I all but gave up on the channel when they started showing everything BUT music videos. And much of the music I saw in the early '90s (grunge & gangsta rap) got very old very fast for me. Daria brought me back to MTV. But if Daria leaves, I may follow.

Once again, I'm sounding the alarm -- if you want to keep Daria an the air well into the next millennium (and putting out good episodes to boot), get those letters out. The pen is mightier than the remote control (unless you're in a Nielsen family). My letter has already been sent (certified mail, no less) -- how about YOURS?

Here's the address again:

Brian Graden Executive Vice-President of Programming MTV Networks 1515 Broadway New York, NY 10036-5797

In the TOON Magazine interview with Glen Eichler and Susie Lewis, Glen said that Brian Graden is a big fan of Daria. So at least we know that at least ONE person at MTV watches the show. He may very well be the ONLY one who watches it, and despite his title he most likely can't keep it on the air by himself. Send him your letters and help him out!

I have never written a network to praise or condemn a show before -- that's how enthusiastic -- no, passionate -- I am about Daria. I am on a crusade here. I plan to include the address in as many of my posts as possible. Pass it on to anyone you know who even REMOTELY likes Daria and get them to write a letter.
