Mike's Delayed Reaction Review-"Just Add Water"

MDRR #312 (3-38) I think I've heard some of this before

Post Heart Attack Watch - Mr. DeMartino should be avoiding all stressful situations, if possible. They're finding him anyway; maybe Miss Barch has placed some sort of curse on him. Last week, he almost got deported and now he's forced to face one of his inner demons. He has become a ticking time bomb. It's not a matter of if he'll explode; it's a matter of when. Jake wasn't exactly relaxed, either. His sparring with Helen caused him to miss an opportunity to save the day in the pilot's room (not that Helen would have noticed).

Blast from the Past - Was it the cafeteria meatloaf? How about the word lothario in a Sick Sad World promo? No! It was the so-called 'plot' of this episode. It's been around a couple of times before and has a less than stellar success rate.

Discontinuity of the Week - Daria and Jane were less than impressed with Sick Sad World as recently as The Lawndale File, but they seem almost giddy about a sixty-plus hour marathon of the stuff. All right, this isn't that big of a screw up (this section is just to maintain a giant cheesy in-joke included with this review). On the other hand, Jake did use the word edgy again. At least he remembered it, even if he doesn't exactly know what it means.

Fashion Club Fiasco - Sandi and Quinn go back to some of their old tricks in their struggle for control of the fashion club. Sandi feigns civility towards Quinn, while plotting to try to take her popularity out by spreading nasty rumors about Quinn being stood up for a date. Quinn either is oblivious to this scheming or has something worked out for herself to counter the attacks. This time, Quinn comes out on top at the end, which is probably the lesser of two evils (Quinn is not nearly as capable of the same kind of treachery that Sandi is). In the end, Quinn and Sandi will probably give up the struggle when they both realize that the only prize is the right to control Tiffany and Staci like sock puppets.

Funny Throwaway Line of the Week - This one had me in stitches and I think I've repeated it to about ten people so far. It was the Sick Sad World trailer that went, "Meet the cannibal with a heart, before he eats it! Next." Classic!

Gambling Away the Future - No wonder Mr. DeMartino wanted to get out of Casino Night. I particularly enjoyed his attempts to give away his chips. He wanted to give them to Daria because she makes him "want to kill himself a little less" and to Jane because she is "so angular." His poker addiction had him so disoriented, he didn't realize that he could get rid of the chips in the same Daria and Jane did, betting them all on one spin of the roulette wheel. The gambling problem was one of the more interesting developments of this episode and it was a shame that it degenerated into Mr. DeMartino going around asking everyone to buy his watch.

Marital Bliss - Jake and Helen have more problems that most of us want to believe. Helen has taken him for granted virtually the entire series except for Jake of Hearts and Road Worrier and Jake resents her for it. All he is, is a puppy that wants his belly rubbed every once and a while. Not that he should go off on those little tirades, but they would be less frequent if Helen paid more attention to him. Then again, if Jake went on fewer tirades, Helen may pay more attention to him. It's one of those vicious things!

Appropriate Ending of the Series - The fact that the boat hit a garbage scow is interesting. I mean, they could have hit anything but they chose garbage. Maybe, whoever came up with this idea will take the hint and throw this "plot" in the garbage where it belongs.

This episode had a somewhat interesting premise that, in and of itself, wasn't a problem. The problem is that this episode was all over the place and that there wasn't much flow to the events that happened. In other words, the pace was clunky. This episode was far too similar to Fair Enough for me. Daria and Jane were thrust into a series of stupid situations that they very easily could have avoided. The parallels to Fair Enough are staggering and don't stop there. Let's go down the list, shall we. First, there is Miss Li making participation in a school sponsored event mandatory; been there, done that. Then there's Mr. DeMartino going into a rage for some reason, Quinn and Sandi's little duel, Miss Barch and "skinny" kind of hooking up together and some sort of large disturbance that ruins everyone's fun (Fair Enough had the food fight, Just Add Water had the Titanic-like crash). The ending with just Kevin and Brittany seemed borrowed. Even the titles of both episodes come from the realm of cliche-ville. Basically, it had most of the same elements, tweaked slightly with some new situations and repackaged in the hopes that no one would notice. Overall (everyone all together now), "it was just a bunch of stuff that happened."

The Bottom Line: Fair Enough on a boat.

Grade: C+ (Saved from a B by the fact that I saw this episode in season two.)

Daria as a Whole #1, Fun with Acronyms - Did anyone else notice that if you took the first letter in each word of the title of this episode, you get the word JAW? I wonder if they were in shark infested waters when they crashed.

Daria as a Whole #2, Stupid In-joke - As I mentioned above, I have made this review one giant self-referential "joke" as a response to how this episode turned out. A hundred points to anyone that "gets it." (Hint: look for the ghost of Delayed Reaction Reviews past and you'll eventually find the answer.)

Next Week- Jane is addicted to the drug of love.

It would require a different plot device. There are no hurricanes in our future, so there won't be a chance of the town blowing away, and since we have a drought there won't be any big wet rainstorm.

As if that stopped any number of recording artists.

i have never been able to read music... i played recorder when i was 6-7 or thereabouts, and piano when i was 9-11, and then we had to learn music at secondary school until the end of year 9.. and i still couldn't do it. in fact the main reason i stopped taking piano lessons was that i could not read music. grrr. 'course it's much easier now i play guitar. although my fingers have gone all soft because i haven't played for 3 weeks. grrrr.

"Did anyone ever make you practice 'Pop Goes the Weasel' on the flute for a year?"

For me it was "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer" on the piano for 6 months. That was what convinced Mom and Dad to let me quit--playing a Christmas song at Easter--and the fact that I was getting worse instead of better. I was thoroughly bored. I wanted to learn new stuff, new techniques, new pieces. I get bored easily if things don't move on quickly enough. I really wanted to learn to sight-read but my teacher just ignored my requests. So I quit, mostly because I was disappointed in my inability to read. Picked it up briefly a few years later but quit again for other reasons. I'd figured it would be too hard to pick it up again at this late date but that episode where Daria tells about the flute inspired me to give it a try (Cafe Disaffecto). First thing: sight reading. I'd had enough of idiotic mnemonic devices (this isn't an S&M thing) about Every Good Boy Does Fly and the like. They only slow you down. The thing to do is to LEARN the staff. Memorize it. So I just sat down and learned it. Turns out it's a whole lot easier than I'd expected as it only takes about a half-hour to an hour to get it. From then on it's continual reinforcement --learn by doing. Unexpectedly easy. Drill yourself by writing down the letters as well as by correlating to the keyboard. The leger lines are another matter, you can learn them as you go. Then take an unfamiliar piece and just try sight-reading it on the fly. It doesn't have to be perfect. If only I'd known years ago how easy it is. This is fun! The next thing is to learn to do it well. Of course at that age I had a tendency to blow off memorization of any kind. Memory work! Bah! That attitude might have partially accounted for my performance in school. There's nothing wrong with using memory, especially when you have a good memory. After all, it's all memory at one point or another. If I could go back in time and mentor myself--what I wouldn't tell that obdurate little brat.

Oh, my music prowess is legendary. I used to play the recorder (compulsory) when I was 8, then when I changed school, and my new one was most frightfully parsh, darling, my mum, desperate to fit in as she is, made me learn the cello. F*ck knows how she thought this would change anything, but I was drafted into a group of 3 that had weekly lessons. I was asked to leave cello lessons within a month for holding back the class :) I just couldn't see how the pictures related to the notes. Anyway, there was a happy ending, since I took to the drums like a pigeon to water, and have been cheerfully incompetant at them ever since. But it means I can get into my friends' bands, since no-one else can play the drums, and can say: "I'm not a wimp! I play the drums!"

So far we have a chello; a guitar; a trumpet, french horn, whatever; trash can bongos; someone willing to compose music and me with my singing voice (which can be best described as a mix between Adam Duritz, Natalie Merchant and Dave Matthews -- not for the faint of heart).

I can see no way that we can't make it to the top of the charts. All we need now is a name.

I still never got over the stress I suffered in 6th grade when I switched from clarinet to alto sax in the school orchestra. Six months later, I switched back, as I really hated the sax. But I've come to realize something really cool about saxophones, ones tuned an octave apart have the same fingering...so if you can play alto sax, you can also play baritone, and if you can play tenor, you can also play soprano. If you master the fingerings to both alto and tenor, you can play them all! How cool is that?

Yeah, but depending on the manufacturer, it's either a good experience, or a baaaad one. The Yamahas are OK, but not really earth-shattering. The cool part of playing a valve t-bone is that it has the exact same fingerings as a trumpet, but the music is written in C bass clef rather than B-Flat treble. Makes is a bit tricky at first, but there are workarounds... like pretending that 2nd line B-flat on the bass clef is a middle C for trumpet, and always adding 2 Sharps... Same goes for Tuba, and Bass Clef Baritone/Euphonium. Treble Baritone Horn was always a nice vacation from trumpet-- it was easier to play because the music was dead simple to read.

It's pretty cool. A friend of mine is a sax fiend. ;-) He loves to play bari the most, though. I tried clarinet and sax one time-- not fun for me at all. Too much icky wet reed stuff. Blecch. (I didn't inhale, either. <g>) I guess that makes me a sax offender. ;-)

Yeah, baritone sax is cool, it's got that curly bit in the upper part. Is he a Gerry Muligan fan? Sorry, he was the only famous baritone player I can think of. My fave performance of his is one of his most obscure, on the Beaver/Krause album _Gandharva_, on the half recorded in Grace Cathedral. They do one of his compositions, "By Your Grace", which is just heavenly.

That's something I had forgotten about the clarinet. You had to swab it
out after every performance. You know, to keep it from mildewing on the inside,
or to keep other nasty things from happening. I'd imagine that's a problem with
pretty much *any* wind instrument, the breath condensation. So it's not really
spit that the spit valve of a brass instrument is ejecting, it's the condensed
water from your breath.
As far as wind instruments now, I currently own a cheap, plastic recorder,
and a couple of bamboo flutes (one fipple, one transverse) I gought at the
Renaissance Faire at Black Point (are they still doing it there). I'm pretty
rusty on all of the above, but I can get decent sounds out of them, and can
play simple tunes.

Actually, brasswinds can take a rather large amount of abuse, so long as you clean them every month or so. I guess it's one of the benefits of having a completely metal instrument. As for what comes out of the spitvalve, well, it's a witches' brew of valve oil, condensation, and, um, spit. But not too much spit. You can always tell when someone really needs to empty theirs because their horn starts gurgling.

To be precise, there are 2 spitvalves on trumpets and cornets, the main one is located on the tuning slide, and the other one right off of the 3rd valve slide. The 3rd valve slide one is the one that usually dumps out excess valve oil, and the main slide dumps out the "other liquids."

The other really nice thing about brasswinds is that mouthpieces are pretty easy to keep clean, and a good one can last forever. (Especially if it gets jammed in. Not that I would know anything about *that*, mind you.)

Come to think of it, now I know why someone like Quinn would never date a trumpet player. ;-)

I've got two trumpets, an evil acoustic and a wonderful electric guitar, a bass, a harmonica, a tin whistle, and a jew's harp. I never bought any other brass instruments-- much easier to just borrow them when necessary. (Besides, I don't have $9000 lying around to buy a nice Mirafone Sousaphone.)

I think Conn originally marketed it as a "concert baritone horn". The kids have assimilated the guitar into their arsenal. Oh, yeah, there are a coule of kazoos and a few assorted organ pipes. And a harmonica. Hey, my ancestors came from Trossingen. There are Hohners among them.

Please don't shoot the messenger. Black Point has been sold, yes, sold to developers. One of the most beautiful places on God's green earth will soon be covered with cheaply built, overpriced houses and overrun by yuppie scum and their screaming spawn. What? Me, bitter?

As for the Renaissance Faire, there was some talk of moving it to my neck of the woods, Kelly Park, San Jose, but that fell through. :( Last I heard, the fairgrounds in Concord were being looked at and IIRC Livermore. I haven't been following what's going on with it since we haven't been back to it since the BC years (before children).

For those clueless about what I'm talking about, the Renaissance Faire is basicly a month long party put on by a crazy group of people built around a midevil time theme. There is every kind of craft you could name (over the years I collected my sword, chain mail, an extremely well tooled heavy belt with matching attachable purse, the guy even tooled it on the spot to attach my scabbard, and my favorite brown floppy felt hat with pheasant feather (try saying *that* three times real fast)). There's jousting, rugby, and many other games. There are folks who give fencing lessons. Plays are put on using people grabbed from the audience. There's more incredible food and drink than a person can sample in one day, yes, real ale. It's just one great big bawdy riot of a party and now I'm off to find out what's up with it now.

Well, if this episode had nothing else to offer, at least we're seeing Jake stand up to Helen for once. Helen is pretty condescending towards him (not that he doesn't sometimes deserve it, but he didn't in the key ring scene.) and now that Jake's got his animosities towards his departed dad out of the way, it's time he got her to be more supportive. He looked nearly competent in this one. ;)
