episode 501 clip

Did anyone else check out the "clip of the week" at MTV's web site? It looks like a clip for episode 501 - but no name for the episode that I can see.

Unlike the previous seasons' clips, this clip is fairly long - about two minutes.

It looks like the subject of the episode is a budget shortfall at LHS. The clip opens with Lawndale Sun-Herald headlines about a rejected tax increase.

Then we see three scenes of the effects of the budget problem - O'Neill handing out badly photocopied chapters of "Faust", DeMartino asking Jodie to point out Chechnya on a USSR-era map, Defoe giving her art class a painting assignment with no red paint.

The last bit shows O'Neill in the bleachers watching football practice with Ms Li. O'Neill is asking her why money she's spending on security measures can't be diverted to academic supplies. Then Ms Li notices Jamie White not participating in the practice; when asked why, he replies his facemask broke and can't be replaced. At this point, Ms Li declares that the budget problems must be fixed. End of clip.

Hmmm.

Well, to those worried from DDMD/IIFY that Daria may be turning into a teen romance - no sign of that here. No sign of romance. No sign of Tom. In fact...

Very little sign of ... uh, what's that girl they named the show after? ... oh, yes, DARIA. Her only speaking part in the whole two minutes is her reaction to receiving O'Neill's barely legible "Faust" handout - she says she can just make out the words "impending migraine" (fact check - are migraines caused by eyestrain? I don't think so - does anyone know).

Two minutes - that's about a full tenth of the non-commercial running time of a Daria episode. This SHOULD be a representative sample of the episode. I'm not sure what to make of it. "Daria" as political commentary? I hope not. I think I'd prefer teen romance. I can't say it's whetted my appetite for season 5. Not that I'll miss it. But 99- to-1 says this will not be one of my favorite episodes.

Has anyone else seen the clip and would like to comment? Has anyone heard more about this episode? Does anyone know what it's supposed to be called?

Before you guys rip on me about what I just said, I will mention this: "Just Add Water" and "Fair Enough"

Both stories were in the same vein.

One was awful and the other was...a little left of alright.

I'm not saying she writes bad scripts all the time. I mean "Fire", "The Daria Hunter", "The Lab Brat" and "Daria Dance Party" were wonderful. However, when she sucks, (Murder She Snored!) even light can't escape.

Pleeeeeeease God! Let me be wrong!

Headaches can be caused by eyestrain but migraines? Is anyone one out there that can enlighten us? Is there an an optometrist reading this newgroup?

Oh, well. There writers DID once make a great episode out of a goalpost falling and killing a jerk of an ex-football star. If anyone can do it ...

It might work, it might suck. However, first episode of the season is usually a Glenn Eichler episode, so odds are this will be good.

Ms Li mentioned a satellite-transmission jammer in the clip. Isn't that a bit over the top - even for her? (Yes, she does have limits. Even she was appalled by the mercenary recruiters in "This Year's Model".)

It was done as a side plot. It was not a great episode but it was *good*.

In "This Year's Model", I got the feeling she was mostly appalled that the mercenary recruiters came in without her knowing about it beforehand. Ms Li is more a control freak than out-and-out greedy. That's why the funds she misappropriates go into unneeded security devices for the school rather than a new Porche for herself.

I think "Faust" is generally in the public domain by 2001. Not sure about particular translations or editions.

The map torn in IIFY was a map of the United States. Of course, US borders haven't changed since Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959. I hope they weren't just getting around to updating for that!

Another thought...the quarterback gets hurt, quits, and the school team loses, sending the entire town into a panic because they have a losing team. People even think about fleeing the Zip Code.

This is the kind of community that wouldn't tax itself to death for good schools?!
