Yeah, Afghanistan's one place that could use a good dose of Janet Barch. Although it appears that, in Kabul at least, plenty of people have discarded much of the Taliban mentality enthusiastically and without much prompting.

I was just thinking this myself a few days ago. When we were having those discussions on what other cartoon characters could do to Osama bin Laden on the PPMB, we had a ball with what Daria would do. Ms. Barch vs. bin Laden would be a much better scene.

If that's the picture I saw, it was an Afghani movie about the Soviet-Afghan war.
Harry Potter probably would have made much sense, but perhaps they would have preferred something a little more in the escapist line. I doubt the people showing the movie had much to choose from...

Apparently Afghanis are rushing to Indian movies they had prior to the taliban takeover. We saw some excerpts on TV, and the reporters commented on these indian movies, which were apparently the dominant taste before the taliban era. Maybe the US invasion/freeing of Afghanistan will turn them other to Hollywood productions ?
Regarding women, you have to remember something rather strange: there have been women ruling muslim countries. Benazir Bhutto was one of them, just a few years ago (Pakistan). One in Indonesia, too, IIRC. Not even counting Indira in India, but India has one of the world's largest muslim population, although it's not a majority of the population.

I can almost imagine her punching and kicking the TV set if she watches that CNN footage of the "decency police" (or whatever they're called) whipping women for having their burqas ride up. Imagine what she'd do to them if she was actaully there when it happened.
