Has anyone ever heard Daria Laugh?

I'm curious about this. I'm just now getting caught up on the re-runs, and while I've heard Jane snicker a bit I've never heard Daria laugh. Or cry for that matter.

Think she ever will?

She laughed in "I Don't" after her Aunt Amy stuck out her tongue at the wedding.

I'll have to wait for that one to come around again. I got the impression that you could strap Daria down in front of a 3 stoodges marathon and she wouldn't even chuckle.

Well, I suppose it would have to do with your sense of humor. You can like standup comedy, or situation comedy, or slapstick comedy, and there are other kinds of humor. The Three Stooges definitely falls into the slapstick category. Although, I might not exactly like the Three Stooges, they can be very funny at times and you have to laugh at the inhuman amounts of pain they all endure. As for Daria and the Three Stooges, she may not want to laugh, but she might like it. Hey, she laughed at Aunt Amy sticking her tongue out at her, so a few silly pratfalls may amuse her a bit.

Hate to break it to you Mark, but most women could sit through a 3 stooges marathon without chuckling, and I'm sure that Daria would be proud to be among them, as would I. The Stooges are just a guy thing, I think.

Apparently, being a guy and liking the Three Stooges do not necessarily go hand in hand.

Ms. Barch would probably agree with the two of you, but my inner Mr. O'Neill is telling me that making the kind of sweeping generalization in which you're indulging is not only hurtful to those on the receiving end, it's counterproductive and limiting for those who actually make those statements. It's just stereotyping someone on the basis of gender, and you would rightly complain if it were directed at you. As far as I can tell, the ONLY effect that statements like "it's a guy thing" or "girls don't like violent computer games" or "boys don't like romance stories" (or whatever) is to make the people who don't fit into those stupid and arbitrary categories feel badly about themselves. And that is something Daria definitely would NOT approve of.

Richard, you're taking this 3 Stooges this WAY too far.

These are more specific generalizations. If someone said, "Violent computer games are a guy thing" or "Romance stories are a girl thing," I think you'd be less than honest if you said you weren't nodding inside, even if it weren't politically correct to nod on the outside. If someone has great appeal to one gender and little to the other, it's reasonable to say its a "guy thing" or a "girl thing." That's not the same as saying "guy-only" or "girl-only." It's just a matter of accepting and acknowledging reality.

I don't think that saying the 3 Stooges are a guy thing is done to make guys feel bad about themselves. It's as much about women admitting they don't get it. The physical brains of the genders ARE different and they DO operate differently. People that don't recognize and embrace that will forever be frustrated...as Daria is, sometimes, I think.

I know the decision has been taken to kill this thread by ignoring it, but I thought it would be churlish of me not to add that I appreciated Bonus Sock's thoughtful reply to my post about the Three Stooges and the dangers of stereotyping. I didn't agree with ANY of it, but I appreciated it all the same!

Just so you don't think I'm the sort of person to go off in a huff when someone disagrees with me. Actually, I am, but I'd hate for you to think it.

Truthfully I must admit that I am a man (I know, the name would usually say that, but this is the internet folks, you can type any name you want) and I do like the 3 stoodges. No appologies, no explanations. I also like Roadrunner cartoons.

I've been watching this thread with growing amusement. Especially the Stooges aspect. I know, from personal experience, that it's possible to like both the Stooges *and* the Marx Brothers. It's possible to like Woody Allen *and* Mel Brooks, and Janeane Garafalo *and* Jeff Foxworthy. Humor is a personal thing, and the more well-rounded you are, the more things make you laugh. Physical comedy, intellectual comedy--both can be extremely funny, depending on your mood.

Just because Daria is cynical and intellectual, doesn't mean she wouldn't like the Stooges. I mean, she just has to imagine them as the three guys who always follow Quinn around....

Not for nothing but I can't imagine ANYONE being strapped down in front of a 3 stooges marathon doing a lot of chuckling. They aren't remotely funny. Then again I noticed that the 3 stooges seems to be a guy thing so maybe I'm just testosterone deprived. In which case Daria wouldn't be too likely to laugh either. <shrug>

On the other hand I'm sure there is SOMETHING out there that would make Daria laugh.
