I saw the special too! :)

I got that impression too. But what really drove me crazy was how they seemed fixated on Janeane Garofalo. I mean, she isn't on the show, fer cryin' out loud, and how many times does she need to repeat that she doesn't voice Daria anyhow? I thought that took up a gigantic chunk of time that could've been used for more interview or overview time.

Did you too clap when she transitioned from Jane to Quinn to Helen all in one time? I clapped twice...once when I first saw the special and again when I oversaw my tape recording. That in fact was my fave part of the whole deal...well, that and actually finding out how the actors looked. I'm not surprised by most, I gotta say.

My guess is that they wanted to create an aura of suspense by revealing a tiny little bit about s4, but not enough for us to really deduce what exactly's gonna happen. And since they didn't say one way or another about any new character introductions, they left even more to the imagination.

I'm glad she's back too. Heck, I'm glad to finally see her in the flesh. And yeah, Tracy is Tracy. Certainly not what I had expected, but as I'd seen a pic of her before and seen a tiny bit of her from the MTV News Special, can't say I was surprised. I think hers was a bit of a downer, really. Glad to see that Wendy Hoopes wasn't, though. Neither was Jessica Cyndee Jackson, really. Julian Rebolledo (sp?) looked a bit younger than I was expecting but that too wasn't surprising.

Sure thing.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought that. I like the woman, but man,she got old really quick.

I'm just glad she's the actual voice and not a replacement, which is what I feared.I wonder if she's done any voice work in the past. She seems like a pro.

I wasn't surprised much....except how much Jessica Cyndee Jackson sounded like Jodie.I thought it was a voice, not the real thing.

You know, now that I think about it I wonder exactly HOW they're going to handle this.It doesn't appear as straightforward as I thought before.

Well,we've seen her a number of times before,so the surprise is gone.

I, for one, don't think so. I thought it was so totally cool she agreed to host the show, I literally jumped around my apartment squealing that they got Janeane to host it (I hope I didn't spook any neighbours). And c'mon, she only hosted ONE other Daria Day show, so it's not like she's *constantly* on it. Yes, there's this great fanaticism about Janeane's connection with the show, but its not their fault, its the fans. Let's face it, it's totally OUR fault that contributed to the Janeane-Daria connection. I doubt the show had Janeane in mind, and I doubt Janeane had some kind of relationship with any of the MTV folks. As far as I'm concerned, I am goddamn proud that Janeane thinks of Daria the same way we do. The repetition of the fact that she does not voice Daria was for *humor*, she's a comedian after all. I found it very funny because I had not realized until that point that she even REALIZED that people thought Daria was her. I didn't know Janeane really even bothered with the whole thing. But her appearance here clearly showed to me that she is a fan. And that has solidified my respect for her even more.

Besides, I so totally loved her dialog with Tracy at the end of the show. DISCO TUESDAY! Yeah!

That was so amazing. I have such a huge amount of respect for her after watching that. Imagine doing the MUSICAL! She'd have to change her voices constantly! She should win some kinda award for voice acting, really.

Gosh that so totally shocked me too. She even *looks* a tiny bit like Jodie, it was spooky! I too thought it was just a voice thing, not her actual speaking voice. Spoooky.

Yeah. Daria having a "relationship"? It's almost too much to bear.

I guess so. That's probably 'cause she's this tall blonde chick and we don't associate that with our favorite cynic. But hey, who says blondes can't be cynical?

Another note on the show: Did you think it was just a TAD ironic that they modeled some of the characters after actors/actresses in teen shows like Dawson's Creek and 90210? It was rather surprising. I suppose it fitted the characters that were portrayed (eg. cheerleaders and escorts).

And that whole Trent thing.. all those clips of Trent and Daria, and Anne D. Bernstein saying that she has been assigned the role of 'shipper story writer.. it almost felt like they were doing that *just* for the 'shippers indulgence. And what was the deal with showing a picture of Trent RIGHT AFTER they said that Daria would have a "relationship" this season? I mean, it's pretty impossible for any relationship to happen at this point.. Or is it? Damn sneaky bastards, they KNEW we'd suffer over this!

It was so great to see everyone else too.. like Janie Mertz, Marc Thompson, and that Julian guy who does Jake's voice (I can't remember his name). Tres cool.

I just thought it was rather unfortunate that they didn't include every interview in there because of time constraints. As those who watched the Daily Dose episodes know, quite a few clips didn't make it into the special. Like the clip of Alvaro mentioning that he liked Trent and Daria together, and the clip which showed Janie voicing Sandi. Maybe they'll release some kind of Director's cut version of the show on video? Oh wait, this is MTV we're talking about. Guess not.

I'm still reeling from the sheer joy I felt when watching the show. I was so totally hyped up for it. I guess this is what happens after such a long draught.. I can't wait until the premiere; I'd probably jump through the roof with happiness.

Okay. I'll take my medication now. :)

The only thing they've got to watch here is that it doesn't become shmaltzy.Since Daria is Daria,I think it would be interesting and funny to see her try to navigate through a romance. As to the possiblity of it being Trent....the clip they showed had Daria answering the door.Trent is there and he says "I need your help." Daria says, "Take a number." Or something like that.Is this a subtle message?

Also I'd seen her picture in an article in the New York Post prior to the start of the second season. So I know what she looks like. Now if they were showing her for the first time on the special......

I didn't really notice that. They didn't look that similar to the people they were modeled after. I guess I need to look more carefully.

Again,we don't know what's going to happen. Personally, you've got a good thing just hinting at the possibility-why spoil it by actually making it come true? If the actuality of Daria's going out with someone were to somehow break through Trent's obliviousness and make him think about his feelings concerning Daria.....good thing Anne's back with the show.

I agree. It makes the characters seem more human when you experience the actors.

It seemed like they had a lot and couldn't get it all in...unless they do a sequel.Yeah right.

I was in anxiety mode as it creeped towards 10pm.It'll probably be worse Friday. :)

Now until I'm finished.:):):)

I don't think blonds have as much reason to be cynical. People are nicer to blonds, because blonds look innocent.

You know, I can accept blondes being smart. Even though so few at my high school and college were/are. But cynical? I don't think so. Maybe there are one or two exceptions but the rest...nah.

*giggle* I think it's already been pointed out that that scene came out of "Jane's Addition". And...I'm a *DEFINITE* 'shipper but I don't think the relationship should happen until the final season of the show, maybe around the last couple eps or so. And since I want the show to be on for a VERY long time, that could be a VERY long wait. Enough time for Daria to form other relationships.

I think it's Julian Rebolledo. Is he of Hispanic or Italian descent? I can't make up my mind.

Heh, DeMartino's always fun. I can picture him now..."I can't BELIEVE those IMBECILES at MTV CHOSE to virtually IGNORE my POSITIVE attributes."

Ummmmm...they at least didn't talk over the closing credits on the special. We should at least be thankful for that. Or maybe not. That was a pretty dumb part of the program IMO. *shrugs* The thought that counts, all that.

It is my opinion that Daria _should_ have a few relationships before she begins dating Trent, if she ever does. To have her enter a relationship with Trent as an inexperienced teenager would probably place a _lot_ of stress on the relationship, and make both of them feel very awkward. Awkwardness can play a large part in destroying relationships before they truly begin, and a Daria-Trent relationship would probably fall prey to it...

Here. And guess why it didn't work. She went back to the US (and for several reasons I couldn't go with her, even though I would have).

Maybe Outpost Daria (as one of the most popular sites, that's probably being visited by people from all over the world unlike this forum) should install a Daria friendship finder with email addresses sorted by countries (and sexual alignment :-). I was just recently mailed by a fellow Daria fan in Munich. There are Darianites around every corner. The trouble is finding them.

But I guess for the moment contact ads are my only option, although I doubt that a girl like Daria reads contact ads. Maybe to amuse herself about their idiocy. How about this one:

CYNICAL? Smart? Creative? Lonely? Shallow herd gatherings don't do for you? Looking for a soulmate? Mail me at [email]

The CYNICAL (to be typeset in boldface) is supposed to be an eye catcher and make it clear what type of person I'm looking for. The rest of the ad should be different enough from the usual superficial ads that are just about height, weight, looks, age (I care about none of those) to make it interesting even for a person like Daria. The email address finally is a signal to Daria fans. Of course it only works if someone like her reads it. Any suggestions to improve it (especially to compress it even further, it's a bit long) are welcome.

p.s.: The email address from above ad is valid. Messages are welcome (No matter which country, although European is preferred).

It's nothing he did on this board, I just really don't want to hear from him. I don't like talking to people who think an entire region can be completely understood by his prejudice alone. I don't even buy the "I want to help you" because you shouldn''t want to help people, you just do. He rejoices at every misfortune because he wants his ego to know he's "helped you". His actions are constantly the exact opposite of everything he claims to believe. He laughs at anyone with morals, and dismisses any stand I make as stupid and immature. He cares more about being liked than having ideals, yet won't admit that.

That was my mistake. Her mistake was not blocking me off from the beginning. So we ended up as fiances after just a few months of email conversation and a couple weeks living together. This is what it comes down to. The reasons why it could come so far are more complicated. On my part it was mostly too much imagination and too little experience as in my 23 years I've never been seriously interested in girls (or guys for that matter) till I met her. Although I hate to admit it, Mindy might be right after all. Of course this doesn't mean that I'll start random dating now just to increase my experience. On her part it was most probably her difficult life situation (which I won't discuss here) at that time that made her susceptible to my advances.

So I'd say your first impression was right. I've stuck my hand into the romance beehive and got stung. I need to mention (again) that this is all a.t.d's fault. I was perfectly happy living a life as a mushroom before I came here and started thinking.

I'm looking for a soulmate, NOT a girlfriend). She thinks that she's perfectly happy alone. I, myself, had been perfectly happy (or thought I was) for 23 years without any _real_ friend (meaning someone who would still call me to say "hallo" even though we don't meet in school every day anymore) at all, neither male nor female. I would still be perfectly happy had not this stupid Daria/Trent Helen/Jake discussion half a year ago made me think about my loneliness.

Or maybe she's just too shy. Although it's less understandable with the anonymity of email, shyness is still a factor. I feel very nervous about sending someone I don't know an email. And there's the factor of not knowing what to say. Well, my Daria-soulmate, if that is the problem, just send me an empty email and let me start the conversation, okay? Nothing to lose, right?

Or perhaps she's sitting in a different country and thinks a cross-country relationship can't work. If that is your concern, my Daria-soulmate, wherever you are, I want to tell you that I'm confident that it can work. As long as it's within the EU, it's affordable to meet in person regularly. And as I'm not looking for a movie-burger-backseat-boyfriend-girlfriend-relationship but something deeper, a mostly email and phone-based relationship will do fine. And when I'm finished with studying I don't mind relocating to another country (I'm really good at learning languages).

Or maybe she thinks she's too fat, too ugly, too young, too old, has the wrong race or cup size or whatever. Please, Daria-soulmate, wherever you are, just send me a little email. The worst thing that can happen is a little chitchat. I don't care about your weight, looks, cup size, race (human is preferred), nationality or age. Think about it. Is being alone really so cool? Don't you sometimes feel the need to talk to someone who understands you and who thinks like you?

And if you all think this is so personal, why the hell aren't you telling Matt the same thing? He's written several quite long posts boo-hooing about me leaving, but I'm not allowed to defend myself or justify my reasons for leaving? Talk about hypocrisy.

Why not, Matt? Afraid that someone might see it from MY POV and realize I was right to leave? I personally don't care who knows about my shitty life, so don't fob that off as a convenient excuse for not telling the entire truth about the relationship. I agreed to go to Germany because at the time, I had nothing going for me here. I was having trouble with my family and my ex-boyfriend, and was living in my car for about 2 months. The first time you proposed to me, I said no, and you promptly began pleading and whining...as if acting like a kindergartner would really endear yourself to me. But, needless to say, when the time came that I had to leave, guess who talked me into staying? Unfortunately, I was forced into taking a German course that nobody asked me about first, which really upset me. I went ahead and took it anyway, even though in my opinion it was a waste of your money, since I still can't put together a simple sentence to save my life. I was extremely unhappy in Germany, and finally, I decided I wanted to go back home. Then came the crying, pleading, whining, and even trying to bargain with me (a job where I wouldn't have to speak German? Get real.) so that I would stay where I wasn't happy to begin with. I have a lot going for me here now, I'm joining the Job Corps to become a medical assistant, and then the Air Force, to become a doctor. I don't care if you don't like my decision, but I am not going to give up MY dreams to further someone else's (i.e. YOUR) happiness.

The fact of the matter is, I will not put up (and certainly not spend the rest of my days) with someone who is as immature, whiny, and self-centered as you. I still do care about you, a lot, but you were the one at fault in the relationship, and I would really appreciate it if you would make that clear, instead of twisting your "Poor me, I've been dumped" postings into something that makes me out to be the bad guy.

Doom has a good story line - it's surprising they've never made it into a film. But like all these things, the game itself comes down to scary alien monsters attacking you whilst you try and gun them down. In essence none of them are any different from the original space invaders arcade game. The worst one I'd say is HalfLife, as it really makes you jump, it's just like the film Alien in atmosphere - dark, claustrophobic environment with hideous alien creatures jumping out at out from nowhere.

If you have a fast machine, the one to try is fisheye-quake, you can set it up to have an enormous field of view, right up to 360 degrees, so you can see the monsters creeping up behind you. Unfortunately it's six times slower, so it really crawls on my machine. Gives you nice curvy panoramas though, making the interiors less claustrophobic.

Which surprised me, because I swear that I saw a computer running Marine Doom while watching a special about Hannover's Expo 2000. If it wasn't Marine Doom, then it was some other FPS. Maybe it was a placeholder for something else...?

Yep. Check under pub/idgames/themes (?)

So what? I've seen Wolfenstein 3D run on a computer (actually I think there were several) at the Systems convention some years back. Despite the image Germans have in the rest of the world, we're not that conforming and law-abiding. MSB

Heck, I wonder if wargame companies have to make special editions of their games to sell in Germany. A lot of World War Two games employ "Nazi imagery" on their covers, in the sense that they depict World War Two German soldiers or military equipment somewhere in the cover art.

Want to know what the biggest joke is? (I hope no one with any amount of power in Germany is reading this....) Doom 2 was banned there due to MAP31 and MAP32, which are the secret levels, and are near-direct copies of Wolf3D episode 1's first and last levels. So id made a new German-specific version, which supposedly removed all the Nazi imagery. Guess what? They didn't! All they did was get rid of the two maps in question, so whoever reviews these things started the game, couldn't get to the maps in question, and put his stamp of approval on it. Yet all the textures with Hitler pictures and swastikas and all that, and the sprites and sounds for the SS guards, are all still there.

I don't know if Wolfenstein 3D is really banned and on what grounds but that doesn't really matter. Fact is that Wolfenstein 3D was one of the most widespread and popular computer games here in Germany. In times of free trade and credit card transactions, such bans are more or less doomed to fail. MSB

Ah that is as I suspected, and I suppose perfectly undersatandable.

Yeah that is true as well.

Yeah that's true as well but is possesion of the game illeagal, because of the imagery and the like ? Not that anyone would know unless you drew attention to it :) Then again it sounds like it is like other things that are technically illeagal, everyone does it so it's not really enforced.

^^^^^^ Considering how this thread has progressed was that a diliberate pun ?

UnderSATANdable? If that's a pun and not a typo, it's a good one. It describes my position towards this law very accurately. It is understandable but wrong nonetheless. Restricting freedom of speech does never solve any real problems. Or does anybody think that introducing restrictive laws like ours in the US would make the KKK go away? I consider this law as a PR gag.

I am not a lawyer. I don't know all the subtle implications involved here but as I write this I have before me a copy of the German penal law (FYI we _don't_ have a precedence case based system) with the respective paragraphs (StGB 86, 86a). According to those paragraphs, possession is NOT illegal. The paragraphs only address distribution and use in public (like carrying a flag at a demo).

If something is illegal in Germany, it is being enforced to the letter of the law. Authorities are pedantic here. The technical illegality is a difficult question, though. Laws are like rubber. They bend. To be more specific, the above paragraphs state that the law DOESN'T apply to uses that are part of <translated quote> education for citizens, activities to ward off things unconstitutional, art, science, research and education, reports about current or historical events or similar things. </translated quote>

The part that most probably applies here is "art". This word usually comprises all kinds of things with artistic value like drawings, poems, paintings and novels. As authorities have no right to pass judgement over artistic quality, art does not only include works like "Schindler's List" but also works like "Matrix" and even "Plan 9 from Outer Space". Likewise, computer programs (being a combination of writing, pictures, sounds,...) would also be considered art usually. Of course it always the judge's decision when someone sues (AFAIK, id never tried to challenge the Wolfenstein ban in court). My personal interpretation of the law is that Wolfenstein is art so that paragraph 86 doesn't apply. The fact that X-Files, Indiana Jones and Hogan's Heros don't have any legal problems confirms my position.

Actually, now that I think about it a bit longer, I think paragraph 86 was NOT the reason for the Wolfenstein ban in the first place. I think I've read somewhere that it was confiscated on the grounds that it is too brutal and sadistic because killing people (Nazi soldiers are people, too, PLEASE DON'T START A DISCUSSION ABOUT THIS. I'm so sick of all this guilt, no guilt, following orders, could have resisted, blabla shit) is the only objective. Don't forget that Wolfeinstein was the first game of this category that became widely known. Standards change and nowadays where every day a new 3D shooter is published they are not banned anymore but just put on the index. I'm sure that when my generation makes up the authorities, those 3D shooters won't land on the index anymore. I've heard that back in good old homecomputer (e.g. C64) times they used to ban strategy war games for brutality even though you were just moving pixel blocks that barely resembled the tanks they represented.

I'm pretty sure the violence is the only reason why Wolfenstein was banned. That Nazi symbols are responsible for the ban is probably just an urban legend. The removal of the levels from Doom was just a panic reaction like the removal of the swastikas from the German version of the Indy 3 game from LucasArts (yes, they did that, even though the movie had the swastikas). The problem is that we don't have an official censorship authority. Of course it's good that we don't have one but it's bad from the POV of game companies. There is no place they can go to get a game pre-tested and approved like they could in China. Authorities in Germany act on a case-by-case basis (usually complaints by "vigilant" citizens) so a company doesn't know if there will be a problem before they publish the actual product. This leads to premature (and often unnecessary or pointless) censorship by the companies themselves.

Partly. I wrote it, thought about if I could phrase it better (e.g. bound to fail) and then noticed that it was the perfect word and left it like this.

So you see that I realize that your mistake was not that you left me but that you came here and accepted that engagement in the first place. Unless you accuse me of witchcraft, voodoo and hypnosis, you can't deny that those were YOUR mistakes. I never forced you into anything and I never would. More importantly, I never could. You are the one with the strong personality. You ordered me around to fetch you your soda or cook you something.

Let me quote myself further:

I actually put this here to make clear that there were reasons why you made the mistake of not keeping me at a distance. I wanted to make clear that you are NOT a flaky little bitch but that there are reasons behind what you did. I don't state the exact reasons because I don't have the right to give away personal information about you. I am not trying to hide anything. I don't need to.

I am a very emotional person sometimes. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

Talk you into staying? Since when am I able to talk you into something? Go a couple lines up. You have just stated correctly that all I did was plead and whine and that you are not susceptible to pleading and whining. We were in the train with your suitcases, remember? That is a fact! One word from you and we would have taken the train to the airport instead of McDonald's.

Don't be unfair. You liked that course. You were all smiles when I picked you up and you were constantly talking about the nice other students (you even put one of them into your address book just a couple days ago). And I still remember how happy you were to introduce me to your 2 friends from the course as your fiance. You even did it in German. ,

At least one point that we agree on. It was my mom's idea if you remember.

Hey. You were my first true love after 23 years of life as a mushroom. It was and is a lot more for me than a simple crush. I think it is perfectly normal that I couldn't just say goodbye.

What did you expect? How many relationships did you have before me? I remember 4 that you told me about. How many did I have? Zero and you knew that. You knew everything about me before you even got into the plane here. Let me quote to you what I wrote you in an email 3 weeks BEFORE you got into the plane to come here:

Now don't tell me that isn't a precise analysis of the situation between us. Not telling you exactly what kind of person I am is the only thing you CAN'T accuse me of. Accepting my advances was like buying from a catalog. You knew me better before you came here than most wives know their husbands after 10 years of marriage. Speaking of marriage, that proposal didn't come as a surprise either. I made it perfectly clear from the beginning that I wasn't looking for a temporary boyfriend-girlfriend thing but for something lasting. I used the word marriage in several emails to you (I have them all archived including your replies if you want to see them again). I was and am an open book for you.

emotional!

That's unfair again. I was trying to build my life around you. In the end I even wanted to go to the US with you. I gave in to you in every respect. You never gave in to even my most modest requests.

I asked you "Do you want to marry me?". And you said "Yes". We were even window shopping for rings. You chose the bed that I should be sleeping in right now (it's 3:40am here).

These are facts!

Despite your claim that I am immature (which I don't actually contradict, see above) YOU were the one making a commitment without thinking about the consequences. I don't think that is my fault. I told you who I am, I told you what I wanted, I told you about all my feelings, I never pretended anything. I made a decision and I stuck with it. I would still follow you if you told me to.

I never presented you as the bad guy. PLEASE, QUOTE TO ME THE EXACT SENTENCE WHERE I SAY THAT YOU ARE THE BAD GUY. You can't because that sentence isn't there. Because I never wrote it. Because I never thought it. And I never said I've been dumped. Please, someone help me here. Did I give the impression that she was the bad guy? Did I say anything about her being at fault? I don't think so. And if I did make this impression I want to apologize with all my heart. Jess, you live in the false belief that everybody wants to hurt you (Does that sound familiar? It's from that psychological profile I wrote about you, the one where I correctly predicted our split-up.). I don't want to hurt you. I care about you, whether you are with me or not. He told you he was inexperienced at having relationships, even told you early on that he viewed the relationship as a serious one. You should be fucking flattered he wanted to propose to you, you stupid moron.

I would've thought the allure of Germany would make you stay...? Germany's one of the cleanest and safest countries in the world, if you believe official U.S. State Dept. information sources and many travel guides.

"And then they poked my brain some more and did electroshock therapy and now I've got this cattle brand in the center of my left buttock." *rolls eyes*

Excuse me, education of any kind is NOT a waste of money. You should be happy about getting to learn a different language. And German is one of the few languages out there that one will invariably get the opportunity to use at one point or another.

I thought you hated home...? Contradicting yourself so early...?

Here's 2 quarters, one to buy a clue and another to call someone who cares.

That's good. You could've realized those dreams in Germany too, I'm assuming.

Okay, stop presses. First, you string this poor guy along, and then you dump him because he's getting in the way? And you also along the way show you never had feelings for the guy? Someone needs to learn what a relationship entails.

I sure hope to God Matthias is thinking, "Hello, pot? Hi, this is kettle. Stop fucking calling me black!"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I needed that laugh.

As opposed to your "I never cared about you enough to let you know ahead of time that I wasn't interested in a serious relationship so you wouldn't have your heart set on one" schtick? Or am I confusing that with your "string them along and then dump them" tactic?

Sounds like something hit close to the bone, really.

Did your parents decide to shoot themselves when they saw you in the maternity ward nursery and that's why you were raised so stupidly? I bet you suck cocks because that's the only way you can get men to talk to you and even then they close their eyes only to keep from having to look at your nasty mug. And when they're done they don't even want to stick their thing in your snatch because it's crusty and diseased because you fucked so many guys in high school to remain popular. So whoosh...I mean Anita...I mean Simon's Flame...shut the fuck up and go back to the trailer trash you came from!

Ahhhhhhh...did I mention how good it is to be a bitch? :)

That's just evil. Our society is made so that not everyone can "just live" and find something more fulfilling. Shit, if I tried to develop any intellectual view just from what's around me, I'd end up more fucked up than I already am. And you don't think there have been people in the past with a few more interesting things to say than the people around me who never get off the subject of hair and makeup?

Sure, just live. If you're an idiot or in a very lucky circumstance, that'll work fine. Otherwise, it'll lead to ruin.

Sure I do. Likewise the present. Like the people who post here. I'm certainly not advocating not reading. That'd be supremely hypocritical of me. Maybe Grace Slick is saying that. Maybe not. But if your experience of life is limited to literature, you'll end up with a pretty skewed view of reality.

In society. We live in a repressive society. Not that there are non-repressive societies in known existence, but being part of the Repressed People Du Jour, it still pisses me off.

It just seems that the stereotype being promoted here is that of being happy and ignorant. I hate that. There's nothing happy about being ignorant if you're born with any curiousity at all, or even not. I'll tell you what being ignorant is, because I've been there, I was a child not as long ago as most of you: it sucks. It's hearing people talk and not understanding. It's making mistakes everyone else recognizes but won't explain. It's a bunch of people getting together and laughing at the stupid kid. But people don't remember that, and they invent stupid ass shit like "ignorance is bliss" where they want to childishly "just live", forgetting it's not a great wonderland. It's life, and life sucks.

Not as skewed as one centered around makeup and the next football game... especially if your mind wants better occupations.

Plus I have relatives who can only speak Spanish. But...I just thought of something...Hispanics have the highest rate of population growth in the US and are expected to someday in the foreseeable future outnumber all other ethnicities. A little whore. Terminally cute, about four feet tall and eighty pounds, who gets guys to do all her work for her by flirting with them. But if someone suggested anything about her... you'd get beat up, of course.

Well, I've had to have known some somewhat smart blonds, I guess, since my high school is like 90% blond with all these Dutch people

I can't see a cynical blond girl. Just doesn't work any more than me, with my body, trying to be "cute", at which blonds (especially shorter ones) excel.

Whattaya talkin' about Dagny? I've seen your website--and picture therein as well as some of the other pictures you've put up from time to time. You're cute--in a non-shallow, non-superficial sort of way. You can do cute anytime you want to (if it's not improper for someone of my age to make that observation of someone your age). Cute covers a broad range of attractiveness and is not exclusively the domain of the blonde airhead bimbo. Intelligence adds an attractiveness all its own.

And I'm blonde...or I was when I was younger. My hair darkened a bit as I got older. With the torment that I endured from my classmates I acquired a cynicism and disaffection to a degree which I have seldom seen equaled. Smart blonde males enjoy no special advantage whatever in this regard. In fact, blonde hair seems to add another avenue of attack. In addition to routine, soul-rending aspersions to my intelligence and to my sexuality (I'm unreservedly hetero) there were attacks about the authenticity of my hair color. With all the blonde jokes around, I can easily imagine that a smart blonde female might find herself doubting her abilities and/or becoming quite cynical. Some smart blonde women sometimes subvert their intelligence, "playing dumb" in order to fit in, to the possible detriment to their personal development. (I think that might be the way Brittany's character will be developed.) Don't imagine that light-colored hair is any picnic. For women particularly, you can obtain any hair color you please from a bottle. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for intelligence.

No, I can't. I'm not saying I can't be attractive to the rare non-pedophile but I'm not *cute*. The entire style of cuteness does not work with someone 5'9", brunette, curly hair, etc. Trying to look like that doesn't work, I look like a big dork then, so I stopped trying.

yeesh! I said blond girls. They're the ones expected by innocent, that everyone will do anything to prevent anything happening to them, because everyone is moved by crying blond girls (just watch the news. You'd think only blonds ever go through tragedies.) But being male is a lot like being a tall brunette girl, everyone tends to expect you to be able to take care of yourself, and any attempt at looking vulnerable or innocent doesn't look right in their stereotypes, so you're not likely to generate much pity or get much help. And being male you're expected to be macho or whatever, whereas girls are supposed to act like 5-year-olds well into their twenties.

See Reece Witherspoon's character in the movie "Election." She's blonde, smart, cynical and evil incarnate.

Every Daria fan over the age of 14 or so should see Election and Heathers, either of which Daria herself could easily have written (but only on one of her Bad Days.)

Hmm, I smell a thread. Any other Daria-esque High School movies out there? I can think of a half dozen, off the top of my head (though none as perfectly hellish as the two above), but it might be more fun to open up the floor.

Other movies ... not sure off the top of my head. Welcome to the Dollhouse is a favorite, of course, but I don't think Daria would write something like that (it's too dark and depressing for Daria's "world", and she wouldn't create such a detestable main character).

I've got a copy of the BBC radio dramatization on tape, that has 12 one hour episodes and even that has cuts, though they are mainly quite minor.

Three films is good, especially as the original book is in three volumes so the story naturally divides into three.
