Is Daria a senior? If she is, why did she even bother looking at that other school with Jodi? And is Quinn supposed to be a freshman or sophomore or what?

Daria and Jodie (and Jane, Mack, Brittany, and Kevin, for that matter) are sophomores, and Quinn's a freshman. Allow me to nudge you gently to the FAQ, posted earlier in this group, where these questions and more are answered!

But the episode with Tommy Shreman hinted that Kevin was a freshman.... right? He said something to Kevin about being in college and playing football...
In article ,
right?
Tommy did make fun of Kevin, but he didn't say anything about what year Kevin was. Here's a snippet of the dialog from Planet Daria's transcript:
Tommy - So what are you guys on the intamurals squad or something?
Kevin - Varsity dude! I'm the QB!
(Tommy and Kevin laugh)
Tommy - Why are you laughing?
Kevin - Um, why are you?
Tommy - I'm just picturing a scrawny little guy like you trying to play for some third-rate junior college somewhere and getting your butt kicked every week.
Kevin - Oh, yeah. That's funny.
Mack - No it isn't.
I'm still trying to remember where it was stated on the show that they're sophomores... Can anyone help?

There's the rub.
Daria is treated like a senior...witness her shopping for a college (sophomores *don't* go away to do that). Kevin is pictured as a BMOC and Varsity QB...something that isn't very sophomoric (if a sophmore wore his uniform around all day, he would have his ass *kicked*).
So, they may *claim* she's a sophomore. They may *say* she's a sophomore, but there are too many indications otherwise. Based on the way the characters are actually written, I'd have pegged Daria and her pals as seniors and Quinn and her crew as sophomores.

I doubt that, I think they will be kept the same age as long as new episodes are being made. Look at The Simpsons, Beavis and Butthead, Charlie Brown, etc. They don't change ages. Heck, Charlie Brown would be middle aged. If they age the characters on Daria, they won't have a show anymore.
Pumpkin wrote: If they age the characters on Daria, they won't have a show anymore.
I definitely agree; nobody will ever get any older; if Daria is in fact a senior (which I don't think she is), that would mean she'd be graduating some time soon, and I don't think the whole flaky High School kids routine will quite cut in a college environment. She always wears the same outfit anyway, so if that doesn't change, I don't see why her age will - it's just a rule as far as animated shows are concerned, and as innovative as Daria as a TV series is, I still don't see the makers of it breaking this particular cartoon "law".

Charles Brown, a classmate of Shultz in college, committed suicide in 1970. The only reason he rated an obituary in the New York Times was that he was the inspiration for Charlie Brown. He had a round head, thinning hair, and his obituary photo had a rather befuddled expression.
Everything in his life went wrong; he flunked out of school, had his fiancee' dump him, and was working as a prison guard when he finally decided to end his life.
Just thought I'd mention that.

Also, for Quinn being a freshmen...
(Quinn the Brain)
Daria (to Quinn about flunking English): You can be left back and be the oldest freshmen at Lawndale High.
Which means Stacy, Joey, Jeffy, and Jamie are all freshmen.... unless they mix up grades at Lawndale like they do in the Study Halls here in the boonies of Southern Ohio...
And I think on Daria Day or in the Daria Diaries, it mentions their grades. I remember good and well somewhere where it mentions Daria is a sophomore..... guess I'll have to check it out...

It's interesting to note that the producers obviously hadn't given it a lot of thought when they were in the design stages of "Daria", else they would not have had Stacy and Tiffany (freshman) and Daria (sophomore) playing vollyball in the same P.E. class, as evidenced by the opening credits.

Not true, in my school, gym classes are mixed grades. A gym class could have freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors all in the same class.

Having one excused you from PE because you needed the time for academic classes. :-) But anyway, they put me as a completely unathletic sophomre in an advanced PE class. I swear to god, I don't know to this day how I survived... But what really sucked was that I was in a class with requirements of up to twice the amount of skill than the freshman PE class, yet half the people on our varsity sports teams were freshmen, in those very PE classes.

Why not? I don't know about anywhere else, but at my school the only classes that are specific to a single grade are the history and English classes, or top level courses that you have to be a senior to have had the prerequisites for.

They "mixed" the PE classes at my HS by both grade and gender at the beginning of my sophomore year (1973). It's now my oldest son's sophomore year, and they're still that way.

As I've heard it from various sources, the characters will age...S-L-O-W-L-Y...over the course of the series. Daria may be a sophmore now (or may have started as a sophmore, or whatever...) but by the end of the series we may see her in her senior year. After all, it's pretty tough to have intentional character development without an understood passage of time.
Not so...they would have a show with older characters. And just because everyone else does it one way doesn't mean "Daria" would...hell, Daria would be mortified by such a thing!
Off topic, smart-ass Side note: I'm an incurable Peanuts fan, and I was lucky enough to find the first book of Peanuts comics. Actually, Charlie Brown and the gang have aged a tiny bit over the near half century. In fact, Linus, Schroder and Sally all made their debuts as mere babies.
In article , [email] wrote:
Actually, the rules of ageing in Peanuts are even weirder than those in most comic strips. In most comic strips, you just remain at one age forever. In Peanuts, you are born a baby, then quickly age to about 10 years old, unless you have older siblings, in which case you quickly age to about two years younger than your youngest sibling.

It's uncanny to look at the old Peanuts strips. The original characters were Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Patty (not Peppermint Patty), and Shermy. Lucy came in as a very tiny girl who slept in a crib, in footed sleepers (one strip had her standing up in her crib, yelling "Daddy, I wanna get out!"; climbing over the crib rail, yelling "Daddy, I wanna get out!"; trundling down the hall, still yelling, "Daddy, I wanna get out!"). For some time, it was a running gag that she *was* substantially younger than the other characters -- even after her "baby brother," Linus, came along. And now Linus and Charlie Brown seem to be contemporaries, or at least classmates in school.
Anybody remember the very brief period when Linus wore glasses?

Yup...they had Sally in an eye-patch for a while, too. It was the mid-60's, I think.

I know they had some of them in the past...I have two big books, hardcover, which are collections of the strips...one of the books is all with school, and I think the other has the different baseball mishaps, and maybe some other ones.

Perhaps this should be: Sophomores don't do that... given a choice. Daria wasn't. Her mother forced her -- and Quinn, might I add -- to go to the class, and then to the college. Obviously, this is something this school will do to the poor freshmen, why not the sophomores?
This is true, but considering the school...
No, this is way too high. Quinn is a freshman, that was stated right out in Cafe Disaffecto (Li: I just hope some of the freshman volunteers can come up with the money. Quinn: Got any more of those phone cards?). Daria's only a year older, so she's either a sophomore or a junior. Not to say that she's not smart or knowlegable enough to be a senior, but believe me, most public schools resist skipping grades like you're asking them to teach Satanism. She could be a junior just from starting early, but the only real clue we have to her grade is the "sophomore class as barnyard animals" paper. Do you really think Daria would know the entire class well enough to compare them with animals if she wasn't in the same class? She's not exactly a big people person, so she isn't even going to know these people unless she's been forced to sit in class with them for days on end.

Well, at least you had a few years to think about it. In the public high school my oldest son attends (the younger one's still in the Catholic junior high), they have to complete 15 hours of community service before the end of their sophomore year. (No reports on how it enriched their lives, though). Fail to complete your service hours, and you repeat 10th grade. Not that it's that tough to complete; Dan got his by joining the volunteer fire department (where I've been a member since my junior year in HS, and where Dan and his friends have been hanging out anyway).
What would Daria pick to do community service?

Maybe I'm missing something. Has it been written or mentioned anywhere that Daria's a sophomore? The only reference I know of is in "Cafe Disaffecto" when she talks about her essay, which "compares the sophomore class to barnyard animals." This doesn't necessarily make her part of that class.
That would explain Daria's relative maturity compared to her classmates, most of whom would not turn 16 until at least the fourth month of the sophomore year. (I didn't turn 16 'til the second week of my junior year). Most schools around here have an age cutoff at November 30. This is valid, of course, only if the episodes are portraying the fall semester, which seems likely, given that Kevin's always wearing his football gear.
Then again, I'm reading WAY too much into all of this...
