On Aging

I'm still a newbie here. (And I resent the term; because I'm not entirely newsgroup -illiterate, and I usually tend to pick up on the personailities of the group fairly quickly.) Still, though, I say this because I've been here for a few months and plan on staying 'til the end of "Daria", or until hell freezes over, whichever is first. (Hopefully the second.)

So I'm about to discuss a topic which has most likely been beaten into the ground here already: Daria and Aging.

According to http://www.gisol.net/daria/ages.htm and common sense, Daria is around 17. Jane, we assume, is of course the same age. Which, I believe, would make them both juniors. At 15 1/2, Quinn is probably a sophomore. I wonder what will happen in seasons to come?

We're all familiar with the concept of characters which, after any number of seasons, remain the same age. Think Maggie Simpson. (When done in a live- action sitcom, this is almost impossible to pull off: Sabrina the Teenage Witch, anyone?) But Daria, too, is a cartoon. In season 5, Daria would be a senior ... and what will become of her after that?

I can see that the writers may prefer to let her age "a little"; she's got her liscense now, so that's proof that time isn't frozen in Lawndale. But it would be immature to expect that all of her fellow classmates to join her in Lawndale U., or wherever Daria goes to college. In order to preserve continunity, the writers may have her be perpetually a senior at Lawndale High. Many shows just can't handle such an upset in their "ecosystem" of sorts, which is what would happen if Daria ever left home and started college.

Unless MTV cancells "Daria" before this ever becomes a problem. I hope not.

What do you guys here think will happen/ would be more appropriate: Aging or Not?

'cuz I'm not sure how Daria: The College Years would go (has a horrid flashback of Saved By The Bell). And I've grown attached the the other characters around her...call me sentimental. One way or another she *will* age...that's one thing that Glenn has stated for sure :)

I assumed if that were to happen they'd make up a new bunch of character s to interact with Daria in college, although I expect we'd prpobably have brief visits with the Lawndale cast. There might be a carryover or two...maybe Jodie or Andrea or somebody will go to the same place Daria eventually does.

Actually, they could probably keep the same character TYPES but just ditch the names and give them different bodies and clothes. This would just be proof of Daria's belief that there's stupid people everywhere. I could see maybe Upchuck or Andrea (or that one big blond kid with headphone and no name!) going to the same (probably average, medium sized) university. Jodie and Mack would probably be going to a very prestigious college. Brittany and Kevin would go to a nearby community college or smaller university. Jane would go to art school, but Daria and her would write and phone each other as often as possible.

I think it's impossible to just stop the Daria aging process. They already established that everyone on Daria is getting older. The characters can be changed as we see from the clothing update of the fashion club in season four. I think a college version of Daria would be very hard to do correctly though.... After college...then what? "Daria: The Working Years"??? There is just so much that can go wrong. Maybe it would be better to end the series after season six...

I could conceivably see the series going to an 8th season(hopefully!), You could still follow Daria to college,bring along a couple of classmates from Lawndale(not all, that WOULD be too contrived, you'd have to lose a few). Meanwhile you could keep track of Lawndale High, because remember, Quinn will still be going there as a senior, you could have the best of both worlds, Daria in her new environent, while still keeping track of the faculty and remaining students at LH. Going any further with the show would be strecthing it very thin. 8 seasons would be perfect.

I would like to see Daria and Jane reach the rank of senior. Kevin and Brit would have graduated, and be in a 2nd rate college somewhere. They would be replaced by other characters just as stupid.

Anyway, I just realized something.... Episode 406 focuses on Lawndale's Homecoming festivities. However, episode 406 should be very close to the end of Jane and Daria's junior year. Homecoming is usually within the first month or two of the school year. This doesn't add up.... are Daria and Jane still juniors or did the writers jumpstart them into senior year?

It depends on the way LHS does things. At my school, it's very possible for a bright freshman to be in a class with all upperclassmen, but in other places there are very strict requirements as to which grade students can take which course. Since we've seen Sandi, who is 16 (presumably 17 now) in class with Quinn (_Daria Dance Party_, IIRC), who is 14.5 and therefore either a frosh or soph, I think it's safe to assume that a fair amount of grade-mixing goes on.

A very good point indeed - but they would probably be extremely unpopular if they were held back.

Really? I could've swore they were in the same grade (HS juniors). I don't remember anything mentioned about Kevin or Brittany being a grade higher than Daria and Jane. If they were, why are they all usually in the same classes together? At my school you usually got put into classes with those in your grade (except gym, study hall or lunch where they were grouped together), unless things have drastically changed since I graduated HS in 1993.

Not necessarily. My German class had freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. My math class senior year had juniors and seniors. We had plenty of elective courses that were open to both juniors and seniors. I was one of two sophomores in my music theory class, the rest were all seniors and juniors (did a lot better than most of them, too). So there!

Nah...that depends on how big and competitive the school is. I go to a tiny HS, so ALL of the juniors and seniors who want to be in a sport get on the varsity team. Sometimes they even bump sophomores up if they're good enough. :) I think it's like that at some of the bigger schools in my area too.

There's going to be a fanfic released between now and the end of the month, that is supposed to be a pilot episode for a spinoff featuring Amy with Andrea as her "adopted" daughter called "Abrupty Amy" by Kara Wild.

I urge anyone that's interested to read it when it becomes availible.

Yuck. Not me. I can't stand Andrea, and the people who think she must be smart, witty, and cynical too, just like Daria, are reading *way* too much into an extremely minor character. Just cuz she's an outcast/loser doesn't mean she's worthy of her own show.

Actually, I think Brittany and Sandi have always had the same voice actor, but Janie Mertz used Lisa Collins as an alias... notice that Echo has changed her "name" to Petunia... not much of an odd thing in the guild.

Longtime lurker coming out from under her rock for a sec. Hi! <G> Anyway, I think that Janie Mertz and Lisa Collins *are* two different people. In "The Invitation" (I think this was it...when Daria was helping Brittany with art perspective), Brittany's voice is a bit lower and definitely not as squeaky. It changed not long after, but I definitely noticed a difference...or I could just be crazy. <G>

Thanks for that nice greeting. But under my rock I don't think you'll be finding any females.

I noticed this too, but she may have been developing her character. What made me stand by my decision was the fact that _Sandi's_ voice hasn't changed. It's very hard for a female to hit that low so similarly and dead on. To add to this, Janie Mertz was talking about her ideas for Brittany's voice in the Behind the Scenes of Daria special. If she had been follwing in the enigmatic Lisa Collins' step, wouldn't she have to follow her character style? Plus, in the first Daria MTV home video (with 101 through 103), Janie Mertz is billed where Lisa Collins' name should have been.

Hmm... well, I could say the latter, but wouldn't that be a bit contrived (a word that, by the way, I see a lot around here)?

Ooh, before I forget.. anyone notice that Ms Defoe has a different voice now (in 306)?
