Two things...
1. Ananda (the VJ) is probably telling the truth about the "not gonna happen" thing. MTVA is also in NY, and I'm sure that they'd want her to pass along their messages -- you know, don't let the "TEB" get their hopes up only to be disappointed by season three (which is already way into development, I'm sure). I'm sure there'll be all sorts of speculation on this board, and many others about the veracity of her statement, but it's just easier to assume that it's true and work from there. Besides, the show isn't called "Trent," anyway. It's about Daria, and her trials and tribulations as she tries to make it through HS in the burbs. While the D/T thing is a cute side story, that's all it is. It's a tool that allows the viewers to see the softer side of Daria -- the side that isn't always hard-edged, cynical, and self-assured, making her as a character more three-dimensional. But like any tool, it shouldn't be overused. If Daria was to get involved with Trent, it would ruin the show for one main reason-- it'd royally screw up her ability to act and think independently, and that's what we all watch the show for-- we like to see how she thinks, because THAT'S what's funny. Daria joined to Trent at the side all happy and content wouldn't be nearly as funny, and it wouldn't allow the show to continue tackling the tough stuff (cause let's face it, if she was happily attached, what would she care about what the herd at LHS did?) Her development over the life of the series is more interesting than satisfying a one-episode plot urge from the masses. (An episode that would screw it all up, IMHAHO.)
That said, keep in mind that anything's possible in the entertainment biz, if the numbers will support it. I don't think that developing a D/T "relationship" would be a Good Thing for the development of the series (if they want it to last), but the reality is that it's a business, and in this business, the rule is usually, "Give the people what they want."
2. So, with all of that windbagging I made in #1, I'd say that they'll most likely keep the relationship "as is." (#2 on the list of MKH's choices.) Unless, of course, they have a plan to wrap it all up in a later season over a few eps, in which case I want them to wrap everything up neatly-- develop what needs to be developed, and then just let it all go, not leaving any room for speculation.
While it would be kind of interesting to see how she'd react if Trent found someone else (#1 on the list, I think), I don't think they'd follow that path -- they'd get slammed by the outraged "TEB"ers, who support the show, and help keep the ratings up. Again, it's a business. Besides, given MTV's marketing position, they've decided to take dead aim at the 12-19 young adult female market segment, and as a rule, you shouldn't piss them off, or else they'll turn on you. <g>
A very fine line for the writers/producers to walk. I sure as hell don't envy them their task. (Well, okay, I do kinda envy them, but it's gonna be tough to walk that line.)
