Even more *PIERCE ME*

        There have been many astute and interesting post on alt.tv.daria
regarding the last episode PIERCE ME. A vast majority of the discussion
continues to revolve around the speculation as to whether  Trent likes
Daria as a friend and surrogate kid sister or as a possible romantic
interest.
�   Let�s state for the record a couple of key points.  Trent is 21 and
Daria is sixteen.
�   A great deal has been made about Trent telling Daria �It would be
hot.�  Holding her hand in the piercing salon et al. This a romantic
relationship does not make.
        Numerous posters on the usenet  have pointed out what a
�non-event� getting pierced was to Trent.  It was just something to do.
Jane said it best when she said: [You went shopping for a birthday
present for me],  �And he got me a hole in your navel�that is a
surprise.�  This coupled with Trent�s established ineptitude at buying
his sister a birthday present is the culmination of Trent�s birthday
bumblings.  What does he get his sister?  Nothing � no art supplies, no
book, no CD.  He writes her a song instead.
�     For Trent to hold Daria�s hand during the piercing procedure
amounted to little more than a chivalrous gesture on his part.  Holding
someone�s hand while they�re getting their belly button pierced (at his
suggestion) is  about two notches higher on the romance scale than a
friendly pat on the shoulder or kissing Aunt Amy on the cheek. It just
doesn�t amount to a whole lot.
�   When Trent introduces Daria to Monique, he makes several telling
statements: �Oh, hey, Monique, this is Daria, my kid sister�s friend.�
Trent further muddies the waters when he goes on to says: �Daria�s like
the coolest high schooler I know.�
        Neither of these two statements do anything to elevate Daria�s
social standing with Trent. Instead they do much to keep their
relationship in check. Taken together they telegraph a clear message to
Monique:  That Daria is still in high school and their relationship is
platonic not romantic.

I wonder why no one discussed this sequence. It's a pretty subtle indication that we're not going to see a romance between Daria and Trent. And is Monique just a platonic "friend"? We'll have to wait until next season.

Personally, I'd like to believe that there is something between Daria and Trent, but point taken about Monique. Although since he was in a band with her at one point, that would explain why he was so interested in her - they could be just really good friends. Well, hopefully we will be seeing her again, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that the show needs more interesting, three-dimensional characters.

        One needs to be careful when approaching the Daria�Trent relationship.  We
tend to inject too much of ourselves into the show. Our hopes,  our dreams,  our
secret fantasies. This causes already inflamed passions and expectations to run
wild whenever you try to rationally discuss the Daria�Trent relationship.   One
need to take a deep breath and take a couple of steps back, try to become a  good
jurist.   Just look at the facts as they are presented within the context of the
program.  Michelle Klein-Hass has already accused me of having some kind of
nefarious agenda.  I don't have any agenda.  I deal in facts,  not fancy.
        The facts dictate that Daria has a huge crush on Trent.  Trent likes
Daria,  but beyond that, Trent and Daria have no relationship per se.  The
situation remains in constant flux and may change at the whim of the writers. But
as of this post 07.31.98,  I am confident that my position is well supported by
the evidence.
