Mike's Delayed Reaction Review- "College Bored"

Fantastic Voyage- The fantasies of the various student in the SAT class(were they even talking about the SAT's anyway) were amusing. None of them were directly about going to college but most high school kids probably think that way about college. Daria seems to have a dark view on going to college here, even the administrator in her fantasy was a jerk(most of them are, but most people are cool in your own fantasies).

Poor Preparation- Daria isn't a senior in high school yet, so it is still a bit premature for Jake and Helen to feel bad about not college searching yet. Hey, I waited until January of my Senior year to submit applications and I think I turned out all right. Three years old is a bit too early to worry about admissions to college(maybe not for college funding:) and Jake and Helen shouldn't feel too bad about it.

College Boring- I know that there are some shady individuals at our fine colleges and universities but the ones at Middleton take the cake. Does anyone go to class or do their own work there. No one there really seems to want to be there for the right reasons. By the way, if you ever meet any stranger that eager to ask for your underware, he shouldn't be too hard to catch because of his enormous balls.

College Inaccurate- Most of the things about college life in this episode are exaggerated, except maybe the thing about bad checks. While cheating is a big problem on most campuses, I can tell you that most of us don't buy our term papers, we get our smart roommates to write them for us for the exact reason Daria stated- those mailed in ones are bad. All kidding aside(I was kidding about the cheating), anyone who hasn't got to college yet(and is intending to) shouldn't expect people there to be that bad, except maybe the fraternities and sororities(kidding!!).

I think that the fantasy sequence is the best of Daria so far. However, this episode was only OK. It had its funny moments and the plot flowed well but the inaccuracies in college life were for me were too big(being a college student). From me, this episode gets a B-.

from my college experience, it was almost entirely accurate, cheating is rampant, and while the term papers aren't mail-ordered, they are passed down through successive generations of college students, only the underwear bit was slightly inaccurate and yeah the frats and sororities are that bad

I'm only going on my own experience in 3+ yrs of college. Because of the fact that I have never lived on campus, I may have never been fully exposed to these sorts of things when they happen.

As the acronym goes, YMMV. When I went to school, it was a wild n' crazy party school, with wide open keg parties every weekend night, sponsored by the local fraternities. Of course, many of those people didn't study a whole lot, but some of us managed to go to the parties and still hit the books and do well. It's all a question of what you want out of college, and what you're willing to pay (in a number of senses of the term) to get what you want. And the fraternities weren't the only places to party, either. As for the underwear bit, well, that was a bit of a stretch, but then again, there used to be an organized campus streak at my alma mater at the beginning of every school year, sponsored not by a fraternity, but by a dorm. (And, no, I did not go to school in the 70's. Try the late 80's/early 90's.)

But the worst lushes were in the Law School. <g>

This sort of reminds me of to things that happened here at Villanova. One is Homecomeing, we have a huge field across the street from the football stadium that has a major 4-lane highway pass in front of it where all of the festivites(i.e. the beer) are. In years past most of the students would forego the football game in favor of getting wasted. This year when they decided not to start the festivities until after the game to encourage attendance, some students got very upset and boycotted the game. Heh. Our campus (Auburn U.) has a "no alcohol on campus" policy as well, but they have the good sense not to try to enforce it on tailgaters. Basically, it only means that you can't have alcohol in a dorm room. If they tried to keep alumni from drinking, they'd have a riot on their hands, and they know it. There's been people in RV's here on campus since Sunday, and you can bet they've got a few beers on board.

Yes, folks, there are retired folks who follow Auburn football around ALL FALL in RV's. Really nice, charter-bus-sized ones. Also, these people take up most of the student parking lots(and every other empty space on campus), which means that actual students can park nowhere near the campus. I'm reminded of the immortal words of Jane: "...It's not how hard you study, it's how hard you play FOOTBALL."

Don't get me wrong, I love football as much as the next rabid Alabamian. But the sacrifices made at the altar of Big College Football get to me sometimes.
