Beavis and Butthead

They never seem to make references toward Daria's old friends

Could that be because they WEREN'T friends? They always showed animosity towards her, and she always found them to be rather dumb and pathetic. Why would they be brought up at all if such was the whole of their contact throughout the various B&B episodes.

Besides, if anything, those kids would probably *really* be dead by now. ;)

I think his name was "Buckley", but you're right, he'd be an older, slightly less brain-dead version of Butt-Head, and if there were any reality to that show (though I did like it), B&B would've died at least 20 times each, they would've been Kenny before there ever was a Kenny.

Exactly. And _Daria_ is basically realistic in style, so even if there weren't copyright or trademark problems with using the characters, they couldn't be as maniacal as they were on their own show.

OTOH, they could piss off fans everywhere and go for another weird episode like "Depth Takes a Holiday"... If there HAD to be a reunion with B&B, that'd be the way to do it: surrealistic nonesensical fantasy episode. I wonder how B&B would look re-drawn to fit in with the Daria-type of animation...

Hm...I'd figure it'd be B&B. Kevin and Brittany are stupid, but mostly harmless...Brittany's fairly good natured (if only in terms of good intentions, heh), whereas Kevin's just a jock-lite -kinda pigheaded and all, but nowhere near as bad as, say, Tommy Sherman(!). B&B are not only stupid but have a self-destructive slant about them.

I think I'd mostly aggree on that, though I could possibly see some of B&B's err 'traits' being ok by Kevin, though to the annoyence of Brittany (trying to chat up the chearleaders that is). And B&B may be stupid, but at least when they are jerks it's by accident and unlike the late Mr Sherman, who was a jerk diliberatly.

Hm...I can see that. They weren't so much jerks as perverted losers....hey, no wonder that show was on for so long! ;)

Actually in Esteemers I recall Helen hoping that for Daria Lawndale wouldn't be like Highland. Which in my opinion is reference enough. It's probably me, but I've always felt that with spinoffs, having characters from the original show making appearances was awkward. With the spinoff you're establishing a new universe and they're intruding on it somehow. I wonder if the writers feel the same way.

It depends on how *plausable* it is that the characters from the original show would have a role in it. Sometimes, it makes so much sense that it would be contrived to *not* have such characters appear.

For example, I watched a sci-fi show named Babylon 5 during it's 5-year run. It centered on a space-station by the same name which was the major political and economic center for interstellar relationships among various star-faring species, humanity among them. One of the major characters was the chief medical officer, named Stephen Franklin. During the last year of the series, he was given a position in a newly-formed interstellar alliance. His job invovled cataloging the various species' anatomy, medical needs, etc. and to set policies for such things as quarentine procedures.

Later, there was a spin-off series named Crusade (which got killed way before it's time). It centered around a ship named "Excalibur" which was trying to find a cure for a plague unleashed on Earth by an advanced species. In one episode, they attempt to gather info by exposing a volunteer to a carrier and tracking the plague's progress as it takes hold. Who was the carrier? None other than doctor Franklin, the expert on xenobiology who had been on Earth when the plague struck. It made so much sense that I would have thought "well why *didn't* they use him?" had they used someone else.

In another episode, they went to Babylon 5 itself, where they met captain Lochley, another character from the original series. She was running the station, and she had every reason to make contact with the Excalibur's captain and give him all they help she could given his mission. Had she *not* appeared to help them on her own station, with the future of her own species hanging in the balance, it would have made no sense whatsoever.

See what I mean? Of course, it's situational, and there are plenty of times when it *is* an unwarrented intrusion.

Cross-overs are fine only when done with taste. An appearance by B&B wouldn't be bad at all, if their appearance had that certain Daria-esque twist to it. For example, have them be picked up by Trent at a Mystic Spiral gig and have him take them under his wing, to the disapproval of Daria, forcing her to re-evaluate her personal taste (although I guess that's not going to work with Tom in the picture these days). Or have them come to Lawndale on a field trip (or better yet have a field trip where their respective Lawndale High and Highland High classes bump into eachother), then have them recognize Daria and start hanging around with her for the first act or so, with the actual story being a re-evaluation by Kevin and Brittany regarding their view of Daria. Takers?

I am thinking of doing a B&B/Daria crossover. The original plan (as talked about by the denizens of #Daria+ on IRC) was to have Helen represent the Highland Unified School District in a lawsuit surrounding Mr. Buzzcut and his non-PC teaching style. Daria goes with her, and the original plan was to have Jane tag along so that Daria wouldn't go nuts with boredom being back in Highland.

Now I'm thinking of pulling B&B into my 'Mystik Spiral wins a contest where first prize is to be opening act for Spinal Tap's big concert with the Lawndale Symphony Orchestra ala Metallica's "S&M Live" concert.' fic. How did B&B get to Lawndale for this? They're 17 years old now (remember, "Daria" time is now 3 years after B&B) and they have quit school and follow Spinal Tap around like Deadheads used to follow the Grateful Dead around. Maybe in this story I'll be able to have them befriend Max and Nick...I just have this image of all four of them watching M2 or The Box and making idiotic comments about the videos. Huh huh huh...that would be cool.
