Mike's Delayed Reaction Review-"Speedtrapped"

MDRR #310 (3-36) - Hey, I'm not bald!

Driving's not that Hard - Daria finally has gotten her drivers' license after what seemed like many attempts (the real trick is to find places to park so you never need to parallel park). It is interesting to see how rattled Daria got by highway driving. Most people get nervous the first couple of times they're on the highway, anyway, but being nervous about something like this is relatively new territory for her (with the notable exception of the 'crush').

Your Mission, If You Choose to Accept It. - I liked the way Jane gave Daria directions on getting the bail money. It shows real trust. Jane trusts Daria to get the dough and Trent's songbook and Daria trusts Jane enough to drive a hundred miles to get her out of the slammer.

Responsible Move of the Week - Not to say that Trent is always irresponsible (just most of the time), but I would think that he would at least remember to check if he had his songbook before leaving for a gig such a long distance away? I'm not that surprised that Daria didn't read more of it, considering the part that she did read.

Uh Oh #1 - Daria's first major obstacle to "completing her mission" was Quinn's tag-along. The last thing that Daria needs is for her sister to be around when she takes the car (and thus, making herself an accessory). Quinn got in the way from the beginning by commandeering the car's radio.

Driving Dates - How many of Quinn's dates have let her drive their cars around? It seems that she's driven enough to be comfortable with driving -- or at least enough to feign being comfortable. Daria doesn't have too much room (but enough) to call her reckless, when she took the car and then let Quinn drive it.

Uh Oh #2 - Never pick up hitchhikers, under any circumstances! If you do, you run the risk of having something unexpected happening. This is exactly why Daria didn't want Quinn along on the trip; she is prone to doing stupid things for charming guys. I liked the fake commercial bumper (I came this close to stopping my VCR early). It caught me by surprise and allowed for a better explanation of how the money was lost than just "the nice hitchhiker took it" (that would have been too easy). Quinn's "that's not exactly true" had me laughing out loud.

Jailbait - The Freemont police station had its share of odd detainees. There was the judge's wife with the tattoos and the guy who had a hand in the careers of many of the most influential people in music history. They were both useful to our heroes for a get out of jail (almost) free card. Good thing the sheriff needed entertainment for his daughter's birthday party.

Weenie of the Week - That would be Max of Mystik Spiral. He wasn't much of the tough "criminale" that he said he was. The rest of them weren't too bad; Trent was his usual cool, Jesse added a word or two to his already overflowing vocabulary (it was "cake," I think) and the other guy wasn't too annoying.

Teamwork - Daria and Quinn compliment each other more than they probably realize. It's almost as if you could get a nearly perfect person if you incorporated all of their traits. Quinn's plan to get the money back was a good idea but it ended up requiring Daria to make it work. Quinn charmed the cowboys and Daria made them realize that they were legit (or at least smart enough to remember the lyrics to a Twitty song that they just heard).

There's not much more to add except that if I were to pick one episode to show the uninitiated to try to sell them on Daria, it would be this one. I think that is the highest compliment I can pay.

The Bottom Line - Speedtrapped trapped me. Almost utterly flawless.

Grade: A

Next Week - Uh Oh #3.

Anyone notice that while questioning the barkeeper, Daria sounded like her old nemeses Beavis and Butt-head:

Daria:He was uh, rugged looking.... He sings country music

Looks like she was a little unnerved here, with the "uh" and stating the obvious, she sounded like the Highland duo. Must have been having a flashback with all the countryness (?) around her.

I agree, the only thing and this is very minor, is the voice of Stan, the band's cellmate, I wanted to hit the mute button every time he spoke, anyone else feel lie this? Otherwise, as stated above, a flawless episode.

I dont know what you're talking about. I thought Stan was very funny especially during his duet with Trent. His voice reminded me of an older Butthead and I thought that it was good. It wasn't annoying or anything. Maybe its just me but thats what I think. Anyone else out there like Stan's part/voice in Speedtrapped?

Later, Ben The Depths of Shallowness http://members.xoom.com/QuinnM17/Quinn.html

I thought that the dude in the jail cell looked like that one guy that Beavis and Butt-Head were put in jail with when they took that field trip to the State Penitentiary in "Scared Straight". Of course, it could just be me and my warped mind and love of Beavis and Butt-Head. Anyone else think so?

Trent is also fairly trusting, it seems. Too bad it's misplaced.:)

Quinn did two things in this episode that could have got her - and her sister - killed. Both involving guys. It made me wonder how she could survive in Real Life (TM) if she hasn't lost some innocence/gained some paranoia by that time.

Last week I decided just to leave my VCR run during commercials because my reaction time on the "pause" button was dreadful when the show came back on. I'm glad I did.:)

She can think on her feet, but she can't improvise under the pressure of a bunch of watchful eyes.

Daria doesn't betray Trent. Daria makes the mistake of letting Quinn come along, and Quinn steals the money to buy herself an outfit.

Quinn is both naive and overconfident. She usually avoids trouble by manipulating guys into doing what she wants. Her "cuteness" works even on fairly rough guys. What Quinn doesn't realize is that it wouldn't work on somone truly evil.

Yes, but there's still that part with the songbook. I was sort of hoping she'd come up with a more creative lie or half-truth rather than just a flat out no when Trent asked if she read his book. :)

Good thing such people are few and far between on this show....

Something inventive like "not a word" - after all, she read several words.:) Not really Daria's style, but it comes in handy if you're a lousy liar.

Yeah, though walking into a bar and asking for money with that "dating guys like them" comment is a really good way to find them.:\

Well, Daria is a lousy liar, when it comes to lying to smart people whom she cares for. She's essentially an honest person.

Daria's problem was that she thought Trent's lyrics really sucked and she knew that if she admitted to reading them he'd ask her opinion. What was worse was that he'd told her not to read them, but obviously hoped that she had read them anyway.

Part of the reason Quinn skims through life so easily without really trying is that the guys her age are inexperienced, and older guys find her "cute". Only truly evil adults will hurt a child, even a precocious child like Quinn.

No, actually it's from a ST-TNG episode, "The Arsenal Of Freedom". Echopapa was an automated weapons system that destroyed its civilization and nearly destroyed the Enterprise until Picard agreed to buy it-which stopped its automated attack. When I first started logging onto BBS's and the internet, I was looking for a cool handle, and there were already too many Kirks and Spocks and Worfs around. So I named myself after a soulless killing machine. Great decision, huh?

Interesting response. I was just noticing that "echopapa" includes the ICAO phonetic alphabet words "echo" and "papa" representing the letters "E" and "P". Was just wondering what significance that could have. Now I'm wondering what significance that could have on the Star Trek ep.

I've never bothered with "handles" I just go by my name. Yes, it's me, Bob, as in Bob.

Hey! You're a "Bobbi"? Cool. I've always had a soft spot for Bobbi's--as long as they're female.

I suppose I should mention where I got the term "bobness." It comes from "The Bob Book (A Celebration of the Ultimate Okay Guy)" by David Rensin and Bill Zehme. It's a humorous look at guys named "Bob". According to Amazon it seems to be out of print now.

Essentially, "bobness" is that essence that make Bobs the pragmatic, dependable, unpretentious guy that we, of course, all are. <G>

There doesn't seem to be anything about bobness that precludes females. The authors mention such famous females as Jane Pauley, Barbara Bush, and Marge Simpson as closet Bobs. In fact, re-reading the book, I notice that Daria seems to possess a certain measure of "bobness." Unpretentious, trustworthy, intolerant of dishonesty, that's Bob. Yep, Daria's a Bob.

If you'd like to be an honorary female "Bob," then I'll make the motion and with the concurrence of a majority of "Bobs" present, you can be an honorary Bob. Of course just remember that being Bob is not a look, it's not an attitude, it's a way of being.

<snip>

Does this way of being include doing tech support? An inside joke on one of the other groups I sometimes read is that tech support types all go under the psuedonym 'Bob' because of a not-so-urban myth that any time people call tech support (Doesn't matter which company) and ask for Bob a human named Bob will answer the phone. Bob is used in conjunction with all kinds of prefixes and suffix's. For example, a Bob in training is a protobob. A female bob is a bobbette (Although bob is also acceptable) and it goes on to superbob, luserbob, etc. Speaking as someone who formerly had many Bob-like responsibilities, am I, and tech-support bobs everywhere also posessing some of the magic bobness? <grin>

Larry

And there really is a church of Bob. I forget the real name (and I'm too lazy to research it) but the Supreame being in the last Hitchhiker's Guide book was also Bob.

I think the theory is that someone named "Bob" is friendlier and more approachable, just the sort of person well-suited for tech support. Is it true? Who knows? A stage performer named Leslie once found that his act went over better when he changed his name to Bob and from then on went by the name "Bob Hope." OTOH, Microsoft a few years ago tried marketing a particularly uninspiring software product with the very friendly name of "Bob." Unfortunately "Bob," despite its name, lacked bobness and didn't do well in the marketplace. Which goes to show that if you're hoping to market software make sure the bobness is built in first. <G> Someone probably needs to market a software tool called the "Bobness Development Kit." Of course right now everyone seems to be working on an "Edgy Development Kit."
