Posting fanfics to ATD

Would this be a common practice? Or would that crowd the newsgroup out too much? I've just got a 60K or so fanfic I'd like to post here before Christmas, being that it's a Christmas special of sorts.

There are plenty of good sites that currently accept fanfic. (Although some are pickier than others.) The Daria Fan Fiction Website, run by Naomi, has an Open Door policy (I'm pretty sure), but she only updates monthly, I think. Anyway you can check it out at:

Other sites have selection criteria-- they are picky about what they post, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, and, besides, it's a Free Country.

There's also the new Daria site coming soon from the guys who had the Daria Spot and the Forlorn Dungeon, but it won't be up until January. They do have a killer script that automatically adds fics to their database, though. It's still up at the Forlorn Dungeon.

I don't think very highly of this site (for reasons that Paperpusher already knows). Primary among them is the atmosphere of competition it fosters, with a ranking system and "Top 20" list that can be sabotaged by any author just by constantly giving his own story a "10".

Actually, I've decided to relax my selection criteria somewhat, due to the fact that (A) the Daria Fanfic Website doesn't update very often, and (B) Daria Web won't be online until January. I'll now take any story that doesn't rate higher than PG-13 (i.e. no sex beyond that which is implied -- and DEFINITELY no "slash" stuff! -- and no graphic violence; this is also partly due to the TOS agreement at Simplenet). I'll even take -- *sigh* -- Daria/Trent stories.

Of course, those stories which I believe to be the "creme de la creme" will still be given "standout" status, with a section devoted to the particular author. So far, only four people (not including myself *grin*) have earned this distinction, and it's a tough group to get into. As you said, my site, my rules. :-)

What does all of this mean? It means that "Herself, an Elf" will be online at the next update (which should be either today or tomorrow [Saturday]).

I'd advize against it. You know how every so often, somebody will wish that MTV were reading this newsgroup? Well, if fanfics were being posted here, they legally wouldn't be able to read it, in case they stole an idea or aomething like that. alt.fan.pratchett has a no-fanfics rule, because Terry himself is a regular.

Good point. And as we've seen by Michelle's recent post, the creators of "Daria" -do- read this newsgroup. (I'm waiting for Daria to fire up a computer, and the startup sound be a nice, long "Boing!")
