I almost posted something sort of similar to this a few days ago. Then I somehow found myself sucked into the depths of the nude Daria thread. I'm done now though.
What I was going to say before (and I mention this now because it sounds almost prophetic), was that I was shocked that some people were expressing a desire for trolling/flaming on this newsgroup. You guys should be thanking your lucky stars that you have one of the few little Usenet nooks where people can be civil with each other. "Never look for trouble," I almost wrote, "because you'll almost always find it." "Don't worry, eventually it finds you without you looking for it, and that's bad enough," I nearly warned. "Don't add insult to injury by being the instigator of your own newsgroup's demise," I would've pleaded. "I've seen it happen," I virtually testified.
Anyway, I decided that was WAY too preachy and patronizing, so I canned it. Now it's here as a tribute to how much sense I was making before I started waxing philosophical about masturbatory fantasies. I promise you, the next time I post here it will be on-topic and fully-clothed.
Y'know, I don't think this group is nicer than any other. The problem with it isn't generally someone brings up abortion, gun control, or capital punishment... the problem is people make friends on the group and hate anyone who doesn't worship that friend. There are a lot of personal disagreements here.
Now, alt.books.kurt-vonnegut has turned pretty much all its conflicts into jokes, so we all like (and flirt with) each other. Hell, some people have even forgave Ed, and he came into the group with the direct purpose of attacking us and throwing allegations around. alt.fan.bonzo-dog has only one flamewar in its history, I think, over ukelele tuning. People there seem to think this is a great moral issue :)

Everyone, I apologize for wanting a flame. I didn't know people (wait, singular...*a PERSON*) could be this fucking nasty-ass about it. This is the one case in which I so do not like flames, because the person receiving this brutal treatment does not deserve it, and if I had the chance I'd tape the flamer's mouth shut and administer many psychotherapeutic medicines while having the person strapped to a chair.

I haven't been trying to be his friend. Indeed, after I decided I had nothing to learn from him and couldn't get anything through to him, I just thought maybe I could let everything go, not talk to him anymore, and hear from him only through this group. That, I thought, would be tolerable. Until he comes along trying to solve some theoretical problem I didn't have and would not stop bugging me.
Jordan deserves everything he's got and more. Jordan deserves the worst punishment ever invented. But you're too fucking dense to realize that and the rest of the group will stand behind you like they did before. The nicest newsgroup I've ever encountered is the Mike Keneally one (I hear you saying, "Who?"). We might be a bit strange over there, but we're damn friendly! (I think it's because only really cool people like Mike Keneally.)
So I've seen worse and I've seen better, and I gotta say this place is pretty nice, small gripes and grudges aside. At least here I don't have to worry about getting hundreds of mailbombs everyday or reading incomprehensible gobbledy-gook. That's another nice thing, everyone here is COHERENT. It's like you actually know how to read and write, or something. I'd argue that alt.tv.daria has a lot going for it just by virtue of the fact that the regulars are all literate (not necessarily the case for much of Usenet). I guess it makes sense, given the intelligence of the show we are discussing.
