Womanly Things

Thinking about "Boxing Daria" and the scene in the Pizza King where Tom and Daria get congratulated on their night of, um, passion, it occurs to me that each of the people doing the congratulating were selected for maximum embarassment to Daria.

Upchuck, of course, was there because now Daria would realize that Chuck would have mental images of her having sex with Tom, as part of his model of reality. Kevin, because he represents the epitomy of stupid, insensitive maleness to her. And Brittany ...

Well, just how eager do you imagine Daria would be to receive Brittany's confidences regarding "you know ... _womanly_ things" ... ? I mean, she's not totally comfortable when _Jane_ confides anything romantic to her -- and Jane is much less likely to have something horribly sleazy to confess than Brittany is. Plus, a lot of Brittany's confidences would probably involve the details of sex with Kevin.

This cannot be a happy prospect for Daria to contemplate. Wonder if anyone's worked this into a fan fic?

Heh ... yes, that wouldn't be a happy thing for Daria to have to listen to, either. Especially since Brittany might well wind up asking for Daria's _honest opinion_ about all this, and this would put Daria in a _very_ awkward position.

LOL!!! Yep!

They truly deserve each other :)

Daria often resorts to deliberately lying in awkward situations, most memorably in "I Don't." Imagine if she made up something she hoped would be gross enough to deter Brittany, and Brittany said "Gosh, that happened to me once, too!" I definitely think Daria wants to stay far, far away from intimate conversations with Brittany...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - he's not good enough for her. Seriously! She's shown at least some faint possibility of improvement (hey, she got a C-...doesn't sound that great till you try to imagine Kevin getting one!). Jodie has genuine affection for Brittany, but she certainly has no use for Kevin. He's an insensitive jerk, as has been pointed out on numerous occasions; I think the only time he ever acknowledged any kind of feeling for her was in "A Tree Grows in Lawndale."

Given what we've seen of Brittany's home life and her relationship with Kevin, it's a good thing her character is played for laughs: she'd be almost unbearably sad, otherwise.

She has to keep giving those cheers and being perky, otherwise, the sheer horor of her entire existance -- her sociopathic brother, her awful boyfriend, her lack of close friends, her questionable future, her uncarring mother, her sadistic father who just happened to marry a young girl who LOOKS JUST LIKE HIS DAUGHTER -- comes crashing in.

If she ever stops smiling, she'll start screaming and never, ever stop.

That's true.

Brittany, after all, at some point in her life had it disrupted by her father leaving her mother for Ashley-Amber. If this followed the normal pattern for trophy wives, Brittany's mother had been some ordinary-looking but loyal and probably more intelligent woman who had helped Brittany's father become successful in the first place. Brittany probably inherits the core of common sense we've seen her display from time to time from her mother.

Brittany almost certainly, at some time, witnessed the replacement of her mom by Amber-Ashley, who is probably the person who Brittany modelled her own behavior on. Brittany wants to be the woman who the guy leaves his wife for, not the woman who gets left. Her attraction to older men is probably part and parcel of this attitude.

The sad thing about it is that Brittany's sacrificing her whole intelligence and personality towards the goal of becoming a living doll. And she doesn't even seem to realize what she's giving up.

Nope. Vivian Taylor actually abandoned her family shortly after Brian was born (when Brittany was about 7 or 8) so she could move to LA and become an actress and model (and still works her day job as a restaurant hostess).

And as creepy as it is that Steve re-married to a woman who was a 10-years-older clone of his freshly budding woman-child daughter, Ashley-Amber is planning to walk away from this marriage with a sizable chunk of Steve's stuff.

Definitely. It's in "The Daria Database" or "The Daria Diaries."

Ashley-Amber may be disappointed. I think Steve Taylor's in hock up to his ears. I mean, borrowing from his son's college fund to buy a $100 present for his daughter ("Groped by an Angel")? The guy lives in a mansion and doesn't have a hundred bucks in his checking account or wallet?

Good point. However, how does Steve Taylor then manage to go out and buy not-so-cheap reproductions of famous paintings?

Remember in 'Art Burn' when Jane was getting $250 to $500 bucks for making these paintings and she was only getting 40% of the profit?

That's sounds like he is spending more than $100 bucks right there.

Maybe from Brian's college fund again?

Of course, Steve Taylor undoubtably has a large income as an ad exec and has money to spend right after payday. Probably not much until the next payday, though.

That's more or less the impression I get of Steve Taylor: rich-but-cheap. He buys things that he wants to show off his social status (mansion in a gated community, car, trophy wife, etc.) but he penny-pinches when it comes to his family. I don't think he had to dip into Brian's college fund; he just didn't want to spend his own money. As Jane put it, he's a cheeseball.

In addition to being a couple of dunces, Kevvy and Brittany have difficulty controlling their impulses, as we saw in IIFY when they were lifeguards. For instance, they turned mouth-to-mouth respiration into another kind of mouth-to-mouth. It would be just like those two to forget the condom during a moment of passion, and end up with Brittany pregnant.

Brittany pregnant!!! Anybody want to field that one?

*Shudder* I just figured that Brittany was on the pill - she usually acts somewhat smarter than Kevin (comparatively speaking), and I seriously doubt that she'd leave the birth control to him. Given that she shares some of her chromosome pairs with Brian, I certainly *hope* she's being careful. The idea of a child being raised by Kevin and Brittany is almost too frightening to contemplate...brrr.

I don't do very well with horror fiction - I'll let someone else take that up. ^_^

It has occurred to me that it might be more embarrassing for Daria if they all knew the truth.

How would like to have people tease you with "Wake Up, Little Susie" jokes for much of your senior year? :-(

Interesting idea. Of course, Daria has nothing to confide to Britt, which could be very interesting if she's trying to wiggle out of the possibility I mentioned above.

Upchuck probably knows that song, but he'd probably never allow himself to believe the truth. Kevin and Brittany could be convinced, but I'd be amazed if they've ever heard of the Everly Brothers. I'd say Daria's safe. ^_^

The word had spread all over school, and *somebody* who knows Daria's going to know that song. And once the "Susie" jokes start, they'll never stop. Daria's better off letting them believe she's sexually active. Once they've said "welcome to the club" the teasing is pretty much over.

Of course, it would have been much better if Quinn had zipped her lips.

M Man

BAMMan37x

Eh. Better if she'd simply been taken more into account Stacy's general inablity to withstand Sandi's interrigations and Sandi's willingness to blab simply to not only take Quinn down a notch (guilt by association -- "Gee, Quinn, I hope aren't thinking of doing something like your *sister* would do. After all, the Fashion Club has certain high *moral* standards to live up to.") but to get even with the substitute that helped Quinn humiliate her in front of the entire class.
