Obsession rocks. I've been watching Daria since episode one. I am pleased to know others are out there. Oh, and I do have a question. Does anyone know a really good fanfiction site? Most sites that I go to don't keep the characters in character. That bothers me. Having Jesse say more than "yo" and "cool" is wrong! Actually I would like the creaters to do something more with him. I mean he has to have "some" sort of personality.

Oh wait one more thing. I've noticed alot of people who watch Daria are also into Anime. Anyone else notice this? Strange thing is alot of the anime here in the good ol' U.S. (example: Sailor Moon) are about kinda airheaded girls (and guys). I'm not saying that i dont like anime, just that it's completely opposite of the only good mtv show, daria. Ok now I'm done.

I think sometime in the future Jesse actually *does* develop a personality, because of Daria's fortuitiousness and her inclusion of Jesse as Quinn's future spouse in "WWIH". I mean, if Daria couldn't see a real personality underneath all that, um, stuff, then she wouldn't have put her much-matured younger sister together with the guy. Besides, I think he's only this way because of the people he hangs out with.

As far as whether or not I like anime...I don't. I don't like most cartoons. In fact even as a child I rarely watched more than one cartoon show a week and that show was usually "Looney Tunes". I watch "Daria" because it goes beyond the realm of typical cartooning and presents realistic characters in situations we can relate to. It's almost like an incidental that this show happens to be animated. In fact it's more realistic than most live-action 1/2 hour shows.

Anyways, welcome here. Kyle has and will invariably yell out "Fresh fish!" to all newcomers (he did it with me), there'll be the odd heated sociopolitical discussion, and people will shift into 'shipper mode. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I know. Todays half hour sitcoms and even the one hour dramas are so annoying and fake to me. They represent a stereotypical world that doesn't really exist but but to some provides a humorous outlook on life. I gave up on new shows except for when Daria came out.

There is also some good stuff though. One of my all time favourite films is Akira, an anime film with an epic storyline. There are also some anime TV series with powerful storylines, 3x3 Eyes springs to mind.

I think it comes down to the old thing of the important thing being the story not the medium in which it's told. Just as Daria shouldn't be written off because it's "only" a cartoon, on the basis that most cartoons are for children, so also anime shouldn't be written off just because a lot of it is about sleazy doe-eyed girls who flash their knickers all the time. At it's best, anime is the equal of any story-telling medium - I would rate Akira as being on par with classics such as 2001 for instance, in fact I would say the plot of Akira was better, as it doesn't fizzle out in a lame light show.

Returning to Daria specifically as an example of animation, one thing I find odd about it is that although the expressions of the characters are very well observed and full of subtlety, they all walk and run as if they had wooden legs. One of the strengths of Disney animations stemmed from the fact that Walt used to get the animators to spend time learning how people and animals actually move, and practice at it until they got their figures to move realistically. With Daria, I feel that although the facial expressions are done well, the body movements might as well be animated by computer, as most software packages could achieve something less wooden.

I suppose it might be argued that the simplistic animation is an intentional part of the look & feel of Daria, to complement the simple & bold drawings. However I don't find that a convincing notion myself, as I find the major movements, eg. when Daria runs, somewhat jarring whereas I'm ok with the drawing style.

I don't think that most anime animators get it right either. At least characters move better in "Daria" than they did in Beavis and Butt-head. ;-)

I like what they've done with the animation fine. It's stylized and maybe a tad unrealistic but it works. Maybe the power and elegance of the character design has blinded me to some of its other flaws.
