The Spirit Of Daria

I'm gonna try to get this across, so try to worry about the gist of what I'm saying, because some of it may not come out just quite right.

There seems to be several views on just what Daria is all about.

1. Daria is a champion of the unpopular, fearlessly slinging sarcastic comments at helpless idiots.

2. Daria is an example of a modern female. (This, IMHO, is how Daria ends up in Teen Magazines, which is how preteen girls find out about her, which is how the whole Trent thing gets blown WAY out of proportion.)

3. Daria is a well-balanced person who has it all figured out and is a good example of what a person should be like.

4. (This one's my opinion) Daria is a simple TV show about a semi-realistic character that mirros many of the feelings people have in High School, but is still a work of fictional entertainment and therefore can't be completely realistic.

This isn't black and white (life rarely is), and the above are extreme case's of each view point, and most people probably are a mixture of several of the opinion's (I'd call myself 40% 4, 30% 1 and 3).

Well, I hope I got my point across. I'd really like to hear everyone's opinion on this. If your not sure what I meant, I alluded to this in a few other posts, so maybe reading them will help, I don't know.

I am 100% 2! Oooooh, Trent is soooo dreamy! Why doesn't Daria make herself up to be more attractive to him??? :-)

I think your breakdown is pretty accurate, actually.

I think I'd agree with all 4 myself. We have to remember that this is a tv show created by people that are way beyond high school age. And these people are trying to reach their core audience (I'm guessing teenage girls) by putting Daria in all these cheesy magazines that are popular with most young women.

I certainly identify with this show in some cases and think it has a lot more to it than some of these shows that they put out for teen (i.e. Saved By The Bell, Nickelodeon, etc.).

If only there were more of her out there...

I don't know the proper response for this asinine question. Maybe if we smile and walk away.....

Another view:

Daria is an intelligent, thoughtful young person frustrated with the tawdry, stupid and humiliating experience that is life as she struggles to realize her actuality. In other words, she's just like all the rest of us. Eventually she'll learn, as we all must, that there's nothing you can do about it so you might as well just enjoy it. As Daria observes, "You've got to admit, there are some pretty choice moments."

Well, I would say that Daria is a girl who doesn't necessarily (and in fact, almost always doesn't) go for what's popular, and is especially against basing all ones' decisions by what is popular and what's not (as does Quinn). She's highly misunderstood and frequently overlooked because of this, but she views this as other people's fault for rejecting things that aren't cool and trendy. But Jodie is also right, sometimes Daria misses out on things because of her tendency to reject everything. Some people aren't popular because they wear the right clothes and have a cool car, but because they're actually nice people who are fun to be with. (Jodie herself is a prime example, although Daria likes her better than most. I wouldn't exactly say they were friends; not yet, anyway.) Even Kevin and Brittany have their good points, as evidenced in "Ill". (Sandy is the only true villian in this show, IMO, unless you count Linda, which I don't.) So Daria's not perfect, though I would say that she is mostly right in her attitude.
