Actually I have it on good authority that Daria becomes obsessed with a _cartoon_, not a _carton_. I don't want to give too much away. Glenn said I could mention that this last episode has a very bizarre cameo. Stay tuned.

I don't suppose you can say anything about the clip for episode 513? I just started a thread about it.

Cameo? Surely not a coupla weinerheads from Highland?

I wouldn't do anything else!

Perhaps then you know when we'll be seeing the new Daria movie? Are Glenn and Peggy Nicoll writing it again? And is Is It College Yet a working title?

Okay, fine. If anyone has it on good authority, it'd be you.

But then, why is it a "big" cartoon, if it's a misprint? And why is the misprint repeated several places?

Is this MTV sending out red herrings? Or do you get a red herring? The latter is probably not likely.

Finally, if this is a big cartoon, it smells like Daria Fandom at large is going to get lampooned and skewered. Well, why the hell not?

Hmmm...I'm not so sure the 'you' that posted that message was the 'you' whose name appeared on it.

Given that the title of the episode is "Boxing Daria" and that the clip on the MTV site shows the Morgendorffers getting a new refrigerator (= big carton), I suspect that someone is pretending to be Michelle in order to play a lame prank.

On the other hand, what's with the car accident noises at the beginning of the clip? My idle speculation is that someone close to Daria has been seriously injured (or, God forbid, killed) and that Daria becomes obsessed with the refrigerator carton as a means of avoiding painful emotions. If I'm right, it looks like Helen and Jane are safe, so that leaves...Quinn?

This could be a nasty one. And if they end it with a cliffhanger like they did last season...well, in the words of Mr. O'Neill, "Brrr!"

I seriously hope that isn't what happened. Though it could be a good episode if she survives and recovers. Tommy Sherman was one thing, Quinn is another.

Survive and recover = good; death = very, very bad. As a card-carrying Sandite, I've ragged on Quinn in the past, but I kind of like the little airhead, and she never did anything to deserve getting killed. I hate it when characters are killed off for no reason other than 'drama' (are you listening, Aaron Sorkin?); to have that happen to one of the 'Daria' characters would be especially infuriating.

You're neglecting the possibility that it could be Aunt Amy who could be injured or killed in this speculated story line. She plays an important role in Daria's life (being the only adult Daria will actively seek advice from) but she is less central to active story line since "Is It College Yet?" still has to air. If this is the way the story will play out on Monday night, Aunt Amy is the logical choice as "the expendable ensign".

Actually, I did think of that, but I was trying to give Glenn Eichler (assuming that he wrote the episode) more credit than that. In my opinion, it's actually more annoying to kill off a minor character for 'drama'; it's a cheap way to show all the characters being sad and dealing with loss without actually upsetting the status quo, and I say phooey. Bring back Mrs. Landingham!

(I don't count Tommy Sherman in that category; he wasn't supposed to be a recurring character in the first place, and he really *earned* his death.)

I don't think someone of Amy's age, which must be *at least* late 30s, would be addressed at "Miss". "Ma'am" would be more likely. Even though she looks damn good for any age - she doesn't really look like a teenager or college girl.

(Now watch 'em prove me wrong.)

I'm with you, and I hope Eichler has more sense. If one of the main characters was in the crash, let's have a survive-and-recover episode.

In his case, it was certainly an improvement.

As a Sandi fan, have you considered that Sandi might be in the crash, and maybe a brush with death will affect her as a journey into fatness didn't, and maybe she'll turn nice?

And, I hate to mention this, but she could die, too.

For sure. It had a lot to do with the fact that she'd wished he would die shortly before he did, though. Not that it's difficult to imagine a situation in which Jane would wish death on Tiffany (or Quinn, or Sandi...)

And she'd be even more upset if it really happened than with Tommy Sherman, because she barely knew him, and *only* as a total asshole. She doesn't think much of the FC, but they don't really have much to do with her. I don't even remember them targeting her for a makeover :-)

Actually, they targeted both her and Daria for makeovers in "Malled," but I don't think that really counts, since the FC didn't know it was them at the time. In "The Daria Diaries" there's a picture of Jane with Sandi's comments deprecating her earrings, which is why I had Sandi be a little doubtful about them in my story. Other than that I don't think the Fashion Club has ever commented on Jane, although it's interesting to note that Claude and Romonica thought she'd make a good model.

I thought of that, but that's pretty ambiguous. At least we can be sure it wasn't Robert driving the car. ^_^

That could work; that could be an excellent episode. And Eichler has generally shown more sense in the past (I'm not even holding "Fizz Ed" against him at this point), so I'm almost optimistic.

Except for the fact that his ghost haunted the Girls' Room, yes. ^_^

Yes, that did occur to me, THANK YOU VERY MUCH...um..sorry. @_@ On the other hand, Daria might be shaken up by that, but it's hard to imagine that she would have to focus on a large carton in order to sublimate her grief; I think it would have to be someone closer to her.

The obvious reason for Daria to be focused on a carton, in relation to someone's death or serious injury, would be if the person who died or was badly injured was in her family, and they were boxing up her personal effects either for storage or to forward to the hospital. The only "miss" in Daria's family, other than Daria herself, is Quinn.

I hope we're all wrong about the car-crash and nothing this serious happens. I know teenagers die in real life, but that's not the point. This isn't like the death of Colonel Blake in M*A*S*H, where we were all reminded that war is hell. Suburban life is *not* generally hell.

Killing off a major character in this series would just be gratuitous tear-jerking.

She's been awfully exasperating in the last few episodes, but who can *stay* mad at Quinn?

OK, OK, Quinn. I'll get you a soda. Sheesh. :-)

M Man

Another possibility occurred to me about the car crash. Maybe it's Daria herself in the crash, she's unconcious for a time, and this is largely a fantasy episode that she dreams. There hasn't been a true fantasy episode yet this season.

(The IICY contest promo mentions Daria, Jane and Quinn as appearing in IICY, so I don't think Quinn's going to die in "Boxing Daria".)

If it's not a fantasy, the car-crash victim could also be Erin, leaving her husband and running to Aunt Helen for legal advice and moral support.

True, but I don't like speculating when I don't have enough details. So I'll just go far enough to say that the car crash probably involves a member of Daria's family, and that there are four candidates so far for the identity of the person in the car crash: Aunt Amy, Erin, Quinn, and Daria herself. But that's all the speculation I'll get myself into.

Ah, but what if it's an echo of "The Misery Chick," with a peripheral character's misfortune making Daria and company reflect? Personally, I'd guess Andrea would be the likeliest choice in that case. The writers sometimes parallel Daria and Andrea as loners or outcasts. It might shake Daria up quite a bit to see someone like her -- though more isolated and resentful -- die before finding any kind of peace or happiness, at least that Daria knew of.

Some "that could easily be me" reflection in this ep would be a good set-up for the movie and closure: the thing that pushes Daria fully into the world and leads her to want to connect with people. She's already got a friend, a boyfriend, and a family (and she's closer to them all the time); maybe seeing someone die without those would be a catalyst for Daria to become even more engaged in her own life, which would be a nice capstone for the series.

Well, they already did the "Minor Character" thing by killing off Tommy Sherman (and he DID deserve to die). Since this IS the last episode (sort of) I think that if anyone is actually killed, it will be of major importance.

The only young, female, major characters which were NOT shown in the intro clip, were the Fashon Club and Brittany, so I think it's one of them.
